Gone Elsewhere Conor Coady

We have midfielders, we just don't play enough of them, do that and you don't need a box to box midfielder as you can distribute work in such a way that nobody needs to do everything

Disagree - we often play 3 central midfielders, sometimes 2. No combination fills me with any excitement. And no combination offers the full package.

I'd have preferred us to have signed Coady over anyone the summer before last. The squad which ended the 13/14 season only needed a striker and centre half adding to it if we'd have kept the others together and signed Coady. Oh well.

Didn't he come off of the bench in the Mersyside derby? Unless Klopp doesn't rate him as much as Rodgers did.

In terms of box to box midfielders I think there is only Reed that could do it, he is lightweight but I guess if we played 4 central midfielders he could play that role.

He did, but then got injured with England, and so perhaps needs a loan to kick start his season.

Conor Coady is another example of our boards 'bungles' down the years I have no doubt whatsoever that with Coady in the side from the off last season we would have performed significantly better.

Instead the board told Clough to fuckoff we ain't got the brass and we signed sick note Wallace instead.

It is short termism such as this which is why we are where we are.

I reckon it was Clough's fault the Coady transfer, he thought he could sign Wallace on the cheap and use the money better elsewhere.

He just thought wrong.

Wasn't Clough told a million quid to buy Coady? Clough got the hump and looked elsewhere, Coady was sold to Huddersfield for about half the price. Weren't Cloughs family/buddies handling all transfers?

Wasn't that part of the problem that the board trusted Clough and gave him complete autonomy over transfers? The same board that gave a reported 1.5 million to buy Brayford on Cloughs say so?

Very easy to blame the board. I don't know the full facts and I doubt you do, don't let that stop you though! :)

There was a newspaper story saying that liverpool wanted a million
Newspaper stories arent always true
Coady moved for 300 grand a few weeks later
An absolute steal ,personally i would have been happy to see us pay a mill

perhaps no one asked
I liked Coady but we didnt get him

so why are we discussing him , lets move on
its like being on Bullseye

here who you could have signed

I have some concerns about Coady. He started the season poorly, and ended it really well. Whilst that could well be him learning to fill the boots, he was one of a number of players who got better because of all round team performance.

He could as much have ended on a lucky purple patch as begun on an unlucky poor run of form: None of that might be too significant, good or bad.

In evidence from the same season, I offer Ryan Flynn and Stefan Scougall.

Last time I looked he was a championship benchwarmer - no conclusive proof there, either way.

UTB

This made me have a quick look alco because the last time i watched Wolves on t.v he was playing. Anyway, he has started 12 of the 16 league games and 3 of the four he has missed was because of the straight red card against Brighton and the other 1 was a slight injury but still, no conclusive proof either way :)

Yeah if we'd signed Coady we'd be in the Premier League now, he's world class. It's THAT simple.

I didn't say anything at the time but I did think it.

Can't believe we blew all the money on that berk Brayford.

It would have been 2 for 1 because since Coady's left Scoogs has been a shadow of his former promise

Is he as good as Coutts? Defensively probably yes, but Coutts can also spray the ball about, often with sublime balls to open opposition defences

What's important is to think of which areas of the team we need to strengthen and with what type of players. And then we can start thinking of names to put in those boxes.

I think we've got a good midfield with Fleck, Duffy, Coutts, Carruthers, O'Shea, Chapman, to choose from. I think all of those can compete at Championship level. If I was looking to add another midfielder, it would be an aggressive ball winner - because none of the existing midfielders here fit that category. So, much as I also liked Coady, it wouldn't be him because he was more of a central attacking midfielder who pops up with the occasional goal. I think we have that kind of role covered. But someone like Ivan Campo - that Spanish hard man who ruled Bolton's midfield with an iron rod in the Prem for several years - would be brilliant. Don't know where we can find someone like that though? Midfield "hard men" seem to have gone out of fashion. But they can be a key ingredient of a good footballing team - look no further than Trevor Hockey - that was his role in a slick footballing side.

We need pace up front too.

And I still think we need better tacklers at full back - maybe more of a traditional full back? Because JOC is brilliant, but he's not a left back, no way. He should be our main centre half. Freeman is great going forward, but he may have his work cut out defending at the next level up?

Neither O'Shea or Chapman are our players though....

Liked him when we had him on loan from Liverpool could be worth a punt

Like everyone else I loved Coady when he was on loan but we've got probably the strongest mid field we could probably have unless we spend big or sign a guy on loan from the Premier League who does as well as Abraham did at Bristol.
