Our regular keeper in my first few years watching the Blades .

His understudy was Fred White who I Iater got to know through business . He was a staunch Blades supporter who lived to the ripe old age of 90 and still had a season ticket in the South Stand well into his 80’s .

They were followed by the great Ted Burgin who like Hodgy , compensated for his modest height by having a wonderful spring and agility , which resulted in him not only being able to make many outstanding saves but also a very good command of the 6 yard box .

Was Fred White our reserve team trainer at some stage?

(I use the term 'trainer', it was the guy that would come on with the magic sponge. Harry Latham had the same role with the first team)

It was an exhibition match in the early 1960s. Roger was born in Sheffield and his dad used to take him to matches at the Lane when he was a lad.
I'm sure I remember him handing out the end of season awards for Sheffield Collegiate junior teams in early 90s. I just remember sitting there thinking "this is a bit weird, he's a tennis player and this is cricket". I was about 13 though, so not much made sense anyway.

My mum grew up in Netherthorpe and remembers he had a sharp elbowed mother, who kicked everyone else off the Crookes Valley Park tennis courts, because 'Roger was special'.

No wonder my mum ended up shit at tennis.

Another from the 1950s…anyone help with the exact year?

Thanks, UTB

Swansea 1 Blades 2 (Ringstead 2)

Back row: Fred Furniss, Harry Latham, Ted Burgin, Harry Hitchen, Joe Shaw, Bill Wood

Front row: Alf Ringstead, Fred A Smith, Len Browning, Jimmy Hagan, Derek Hawksworth.

The only match that Bill Wood and Fred A Smith played in the same team
