Jarrad Branthwaite? 20 years old and a left footed CB from Everton. 1.96m tall, played 27 games and scored 2 goals on loan last season at PSV.

I think your missing the point. Almost everyone is in agreement he IS a good signing and should be playing premier league football.

The questions are;
a) Is CB/RCB a priority position for us.
b) Would he realistically replace Egan or Anel (at least without ruffling any feathers)
c) Alternatively would he be happy to come but with no guarantee of being a starter
d) If we are going to play Coady, Egan, Anel is it going to be optimal to shoehorn one of them into a position on their wrong side.

I guess the most important is C), if he is happy to come here but knowing he isnt guarenteed to be a starter then fair do's to him, we have snagged an excellent replacement for Anel/Egan in the case we do get relegated and/or sell one of them.

Or one of em is absent through illness or injury or suspension.
We are going to get plenty of suspensions as our defenders try to match up to PL strikers.
Obviously we need a LCB as we can only count on Robinson coz RND has been out injured for so long , no one knows when he'll be match-fit , let alone return to the form he showed last October.
But who is the back-up for Anel & Egan ? We're supposed to have 2 players for each position , so apart from Basham (who imo would struggle anyway in PL) we definitely need a R-footed recruit who can play RCB or CCB.
Don't make Egan & Anel into automatic choices - they need competition to keep them on their toes.
I'm not advocating Coady coz I dunno if he's fast & effective at 30 , but we can't have only Basham & some U21 lad as our only competition/cover for RCB & CCB that's asking for relegation before we even begin.
 
I would hope we’re looking a bit further than just a list of guys who used to play for us.
 
I think it simply comes down to us needing 4-5 starters as a priority ahead of another (albeit high quality and experienced) CB/RCB. If we can bring in these starters for the reported 20m, plus add Coady, then it is a no-brainer. If we can’t then I struggle to see how we can justify spending 1/4 of the budget on him.

Left footed centre backs you say, eh?

Lillian Brassier at Brest in Ligue 1 is worth a look at.

Felipe Relvas at Portimonense in Portugal.

A riskier punt, but with a huge possible upside is Valentin Gomez at Valez Sarsfield.
 
If he’s available for 4m then it’s a no brainer to sign Coady - which also would mean we’d have signed Egan Anel and Coady for about 12m combined which is pretty good value I’d say.
 
coady would go straight in at centre back egan to lcb harry maguire adapted to this role a few years ago dont see any reason egan couldnt play there that would be a very good back 3 if coady comes here no way hes not going to be a staryer
 
I guess a lot of our thoughts are based on the current system, with overlapping CB's and 352/343 formation, but there could be changes to how we set up that would mean having a left footed LCB isn't so important. If Coady comes in as our main CB signing I'd expect a change in shape.

If not then I'd expect it might be Dimitris Giannoulis who signs from Norwich.
 
I've got no issue with signing Coady to be honest.

A bit of experience, leadership, recent international, was captain when Wolves looked a good side.

What he can bring vs the modest price tag that Wolves are asking for seems like a no brainer for me.

I'd much sooner have him in the starting XI than see Basham next year when injuries inevitably occur.

Egan would be an absolute bombscare at LCB. I have no idea why you think a right footed player easily done with a ball past him would work there. JLT is a much better bet in that position. Coady would be a very good signing if as others have said we first bring in the clutch of better than what we have.

Not convinced he would be available for £4 million. I think £4.5 million was the figure quoted for Everton to make the deal permanent, on top of the significant loan fee that they had already paid. Think Wolves will be after more than this for straight sale. Probably more like double.
 
Why would Egan swap positions. Surly if CC came back Anel would switch sides been as he’s played lcb quite a lot before

He didn’t get forward as much, but he’d be better there than Egan. He was fine defensively on the left.
He won’t be attacking as much whether at LCB or RCB next season regardless. We won’t be the team trying to create overloads and having the lions share of possession / territory. In 2/3rds of the games next season we’re likely to get about 30-40% possession and be reliant on taking what opportunities we do get, making the most of our set pieces and being organised defensively.

People thinking we have the players versatile enough to just swap positions in the best league in the world always cracks me up. If they could, they'd already be there

All you'd be doing is making the team worse at both RCB and LCB

Probably not now they don't. Potentially. Rangers seem to like to pick up the better Championship players on frees and pay more money than Championship clubs can pay. Not often I hear that they have outbid a PL.club though on fees or wages.

Yes they offered Lawrence a lot more than Utd did last summer (potentially a bullet dodged given his injuries and lack of impact) but I'm not so sure they'll outgun Utd this season, certainly in terms of wages.
 

He is a no brainer at the price he is available for and who is to say he must play in defence.

If we need an experienced PL player who can play a couple of positions then Coady is a player to go for.
