I love Coady as a player and I think he's got years left in him at PL level. However! We all know his best position is centre back, almost certainly that's where he'll play if he joins, that would mean Egan is either backup or moves to LCB. I just can't see Egan playing as backup because he's our captain and has done so well for us since he signed and although Coady may be an upgrade (not sure though as Egan is still very good) I just think it would be a waste to have either on the bench, granted there may be injuries but Egan has hardly missed a game since he signed.
So Egan at LCB? He's not left footed and whilst the overlapping centre backs might not quite be as prominent as under Wilder we still very much play that way, particularly Anel. I just can't see Egan playing there especially considering Hecky likes to have left footers on the left side as a rule. I can't see Coady playing centre mid either, he hasn't for years now, maybe if he joins he will. Maybe we could play Coady at the bottom of the diamond and have two centre mids such as Berge and Doyle in front of him but not so sure we'd do that.
The other factor is that the deal could well be a loan deal with a view to buy like what Everton just had. I think we may need loans for positions we're less strong in, centre half is one of our strongest positions with Egan. For the money for Coady, lets say £2m loan fee we could sign Anderson from Barnsley, maybe Anderson might cost as much as £4m but we'll have a centre back to compete with Egan and someone who is our asset for the next five years. So it's a tough one for me with Coady. Ultimately though we know if Hecky wants him then it's because he knows how to use Coady and it could be just too good a player to not sign especially with his experience. Without knowing where Hecky would use Coady with Egan I would favour Anderson or someone similar age/price range. I would like Kitching from Barnsley also!
