Mcburnie was the closest to scoring anyone having a go at a player who’s going in for surgery but still putting in some sort of a shift needs their head shaking.

The whole team collective was off it tonight. You can’t blame injuries for that more than enough quality on that pitch. Just unbalanced.

If mcBurnie’s shot that hit post had gone in or illiman’s effort went in would the 1-0 win be ok? . Or are you reacting to the score line rather than the performance ?
No I’m not reacting to the score

I’ve watched Utd since 1970 and as a result been through much thick and thick .

I actually watched the game tonight in a relaxed mood and tried my best to be objective

Coventry are absolutely rubbish / awful . We were rubbish too .

Hecky is coming under real pressure - he is delivering nothing over the last 5/6 games - if he doesn’t sort it then he will be out

And I’m a Hecky fan

Very very poor tonight and recently

One mistake cost us, we were on top at that point, which was a scrappy game for the most part.. not at our best but deserved a point for me, not the end of the world and plenty more games to get on track.
Ndaiye was the stand out, and McB also did well 2nd half.

We weren’t that bad. Could have gone either way. Take Bashams sloppy challenge out of the equation and we were the better side. Are Cov really the worst side you’ve seen in 55 years?

No they’re probably not

The worst and best side I’ve seen over those years is Utd

Interestingly, this was exactly what THAT press conference said wouldn’t happen. I’m not giving a view either way on whether that’s the right way to go or not, but I think a quarter (or more?) of championship managers have been sacked already (in October), and it’s interesting that we’ve made a statement on putting stability first. I wonder if it will pay off or not.

cant complain overall at any result that wouldve had us drawing or losing, because the 1st half was non existant. we finally had some positive. best i saw us all night. problem being it took an hour to see it. as someone said on social media if it wasn't for Ndiaye I am not sure what we would have offered tonight

no complaints about whether it was a penalty, it was a rash challenge & so needlessly desperate. bar a 15 min spell we were poor v a poor side. it shouldve been 1 of those boring 0-0s. i dont know what has come over this side since we topped the league. 2 pts from 5 games

if there is a positive is that at least for the 1st time in 3 games we looked defensively solid, but then norwich will be the real test because you would hope we would be defensively solid v a side bottom of the league

I don’t know how anyone can defend that performance. The closest we came was from a snapshot outside of the box, we offered very little threat all game and constantly gave the ball away, against a side who will likely finish bottom. We looked clueless.

I don’t believe for a second the 9 goals we have conceded in our last 5 happen if we have a settled back line. All good and well moaning, but one of the reasons we bludgeoned teams in the first 10 was because teams were getting nowhere against our defence, losing the ball and having to sit back.

We have a softer underbelly now, results like tonight and Saturday are bound to happen if your constantly changing two/three of the back 5 and their positions. Ain’t just attacking in football.

Poor game

0-0 would have been a fair result. In fact we were dominating and their fans were getting restless before Bash made an idiotic challenge he could never win. Neither team looked like scoring though, but we looked the livelier. We started ok but losing RND threw us and we were poor for 20 minutes in the middle of the first half before picking up again. We gradually wrestled control second half and they couldn't stop us attacking in waves. And then idiocy.

We struggled to hold the ball up front first half. Kept coming back. Both strikers needed to be better but the service was poor. Indeed, there was a lot of lobbed hit and hope balls to McBurnie tonight. It doesn't work.

Davies - 5 - Made a standard save. Kicking was poorish, with one loose pass, but he needs to be dominating his area. Stood on his line for a couple of corners. First game for a long time so give him the benefit as bound to be rusty.
RND - 5.5 - Made a couple of run forward but end product was poor. Looks like he's done his hamstring. Will be a miss.
Basham - 2 - Looks shot. Slow and struggling to keep up. I said we shouldn't give him 2 years and apparently "he's the fittest man in the team". At the very least can't be playing every game. Hopefully Robinson will step up. Lucky to not give two penalties away today.
Egan - 5 - Loses a point for his attacking headers. 2 of them just feeble when should have tested the keeper. Completely lost the ability to be a danger from corners. Defensively did ok. Lot of hit and hope balls though.
Anel - 6 - Best of the defence really but still looked a little clumsy. At least tried to make something happen.
Baldock - 4 - Terrible going forward. Absolutely terrib;e by his low standards. Takes an extra tough now every time and allows defenders to get back. Mixed defensively.
Osborn - 3.5 - He looked a mess when moving to LWB. To give him credit, he did improve, but it was from a very low starting point
Norwood - 5 - Having to do 2-3 peoples work in midfield. Several sloppy passes tonight and never really got on the ball. Looked slow and ponderous on the ball.
Doyle - 5.5 - Some good things but he's a strange player at times. Seems to run on sand sometimes and can be so slow to get back. He was at least trying things.
Ndiaye - 7.5 - MOM by a fair way, although was poor at holding it up first half. Looked like the only player likely to make something happen. The ball seems to stick to his foot.
McBurnie - 6 - Put a proper shift in tonight and expected to win headers he wasn't favourite for. Great shot against the post and he was our only outlet for much of the game. Not everything came off for him but kept going.

Subs

McAtee - 6 - Made a terrible tackle early doors and looked a bit of sea but settled into it a bit. Gets an extra point for running half the length of the pitch to cover Doyle who was labouring. Put in a shift and did a couple of things going forward. Unconvinced still of his defensive abilities though.
Fleck - 4.5 - Good to have him back but it looked like Jimmy tonight. Playing on the wrong side he looked awkward. Tried a couple of decent throughballs though
Sharp - 4 - Thought he was poor when he game on. Trying ridiculous shots when better trying to hold it.

Hecky - 4 - Not sure how to mark him here. He picked the starting team I'd have picked but then had to change it early on with RND coming on. After a shaky middle first half, we were the more likely in the second without really testing their keeper. Can't account for Basham's poor choice. Not sure there are many other choices in terms of subs. He could have thrown Brewster on but they were sat so deep by then, not sure it would make a different. We're desperately short in the middle.

Coventry - looked poor but you could see flashes of why they're a good team. We neutralised them pretty well for most of the game without overly testing them. I though McFadzean made a couple of vital contributions when needed for them.

I think the plan tonight was get a clean sheet and anything else was a bonus. Makes sense when we've had a few poor results. If it had ended 0-0 I don't think that would have been too bad. We were the dominant team and Coventry fans were showing their displeasure.

I worry about our CM though. This is the major issue and was at the start of the season. They provide very little cover and also do not create that much when we need something different.

The whole team collective was off it tonight. You can’t blame injuries for that more than enough quality on that pitch. Just unbalanced.

The front two were alright (with very little support). Anel played well. Davies didn’t do anything wrong. The others were 4/10 or below.

We're so easy to play against at the moment.

Let us have as much possession as we want to do our slow predictable passing, ultimately resulting in our impotent forwards either not even managing a shot or hitting it straight at the keeper.

Then hit a long hopeful ball into our box and watch the chimps tea party that unfolds as we stand still and point at each other or make a panicked reckless tackle.

The early season optimism is a distant memory.

We look like a team with little confidence apart from Mcburnie, Ndiaye & Anel.
Too many players panic on the ball and give the ball away, I'm not sure what we are coaching them but we need to be able to beat a press from Cov, Blackpool, Brum etc. I don't mind losing if we play well and attack and we did have moments today but the overall performance was lacklustre and lacked finesse and purpose. The amount of 2nd balls and 50/50s that we don't win is crazy compared to how many we used to win under Wilder. Despite the ref giving us so many decisions, we still couldn't win. Worrying signs and needs improving.

Hecky needs to work on our footballing philosophy, I feel we have lost our way a little.

Hecky does his stuff which sadly is nothing. No changes even the athmosphere, energy and results with the team are staying the same.

Coventry seemed much easier opponent and we still managed to throw it all. Would had been inspiring change to even see all the youngsters and loanees to start and oldies support as subs.

We are still missing leaders. Player(s) who take the game forward and not only follow. Our game seems like we have glass wall in final 3rd and we are out of ideas, out of succes and out of goals.

We need something to shock / jump start the team (in a good way).

Hecky has a 5 year contract and is under no pressure whatsoever even if we finish bottom.
That's what the press conference said.
Results don't matter.
We are a self-sustaining business for developing + selling players.
The trouble is that most of the ones on the pitch couldn't give a shit about improving themselves.
Small example - give Baldock a simple instruction , cross it first time - he just ignores it.
Manager appears to have either no clue or , if he does , no influence over how they play.
Throwing away 13 of the last 15 points to take us from clear top to an also-ran is unforgivable , no matter what the injuries , because the manager has made some bizarre choices + those on the pitch have shown no pride in the job whatsoever.

Hecky has no idea! Just stood there through THAT shocking first half, no surprise to see no changes after the break! we did a Little! better second half but still never looked like scoring until the last 10 minutes. I hate to say it but Ozzy and Bash were terrible! and at times the midfield went missing, no cohesion and at times couldn’t put too passes together, no quality and still Hecky just stood there quite happy at 0-0 then after they scored he puts an attacking sub on, too late Hecky!! Pathetic Hecky. It looked like he was happy wIth a draw and if we could nick a 1-0 Great! inept performance excerpt for Mcburni and Iliman who both ran their socks off. NO Brewster on 70 minutes? to try a pep things up! same old Hecky will never change thing even if he can see that it’s not working? Can anyone remember a manager at the Lane who would changes things in the first half If it was not working? Also has anyone noticed that we never have any overlapping defenders/ midfielders anymore, other clubs have copied it and United have a abandoned it!

Agree about giving the ball away to often, we've been like that in recent games, but we were on top, they were looking ragged and turning it over to us. Not saying we were great, but deserved a point, and Bash dives in unnecessarily, and cost us the game.

No humble pie tonight.

Sense an inevitable implosion is upon us. World Cup break may cause us to lose any remaining impetus.

Hope I’m proved wrong by Hecky & Co again.

UTB

What great work and words from our Board again!! The Managers job is safe for the next five years no matter what. Seriously, I don’t know how these inept twats make their money in business. But in Sheffield United World anything goes. This Club and the arseholes who’ve run it for decades are a breed apart.

Complete tactical ineptitude.if you are having an injury crisis you need to adapt to what is on the pitch and available.
As we seem incapable of playing a back 4, stick to a 3 but rigid. No going past half way no over lapping, defend as a unit. If the ball is on the left 2 move across 1 sweeps and vice versa. 1 holding midfield, sits and distributes works with defence as extra cover. If they can't score we can't loose. The other 4, 2 wide (don't over commit) but tuck in when defending the other 2 sit in the middle and break up play and distribute when they have it to the 2 strikers then 1 supports. It isnt rocket science, it might not create exciting football but at the minute we are boring, inept in defence and loosing. And use your fucking subs for more than 5 mins

There's a lot to be said about belief.

And I just don't think that the squad believes in the methods of PH and his tactics.

Gone are the smiles and front foot football of the first few weeks.

And back is the tippy tappy edginess and frowns.

A lot of that is self belief. Success breeds success. As we've seen with McB scoring.

At the moment confidence is on a low.
That's also reflected in / bred by the crowd. It's been near silent, even last week at 2-0 up was dire.

A poor game contested by two poor sides which neither really deserved anything out of. If both teams could've finished with nothing, I think that would've been a fairer result.

Gordon Bennett. The Blades were so much on top, if that was a boxing match the ref would have stopped it in round 9. Still it's all about getting it in the onion bag and right now we're unable to deliver the knockout punch.
