It seems likely that at best we will only end up with one of Maupay and McBurnie.

I think the consensus is that we will need to bring in at least 2 strikers this window, therefore who would you target as the second. Names mentioned so far;

Kemar Roofe
Britt Assombalonga
Lucas Joao
Dwight Gayle
Lys Mousset

Not keen on any of those 5 personally.

Abraham on loan from Chelsea might be pushing it a bit in terms of realism. And perhaps he's too similar to McBurnie.

Marriott would be realistic and perhaps closer to the Maupay style if it was him we missed out on. He'd be high up on my list to take a chance on.

Others I have mused over are Morelos (who Palace are now favourites to sign) and Isaac Success - but neither strike me as a CW type of player.

So my vote would go to Jack Marriott.

Yours?

I think this thread highlights the need to expand our recruitment beyond the UK & Ireland. None of the players you listed really appeal massively and no doubt we wouldn't get much change out of £10m for the majority of them.

100 Rumour Mill points to anyone who can suggest a good realistic alternative to McBurnie.

Marriott is a good shout if we don’t succeed with Maupay. I rate Joao though but he’s a different sort of player, more an impact player imo, and we need other types more urgently.

Closest i can think is Lukas Nmecha, 3 years younger 6'1 would costs consideably less and a future one?

Not a true like-for-like but Lukas Jutkiewicz is probably a better option than those listed by the OP but I'd certainly prefer McBurnie

I'm afraid I must be one of only a few that doesn't get the Jack Marriott love-in. He may improve into a very good player and does appear to be quite sharp in front of goal but he was unable to get into the Derby side for long periods last season and scored a grand total of 7 from 33 appearances (granted a fair few were as sub). Prior to that, he played at L1 and below. As of today, Maupay would be the much lower risk (albeit at higher cost).

Personally I’d go for Marriott , seems a good composed finisher and full of energy .

Other than that it’s maybe time to cast our net further afield and look at the foreign market . Not sure what our scouting is like in regards to that though .

Outside bet could Alexander Sørloth at Palace. Signed 18 months ago for £9 million from FC Midtjylland. Never really settled. 23 years old, 6 foot 4, decent amount of pace. Norwegian international. Still got a few years left on his contract so I reckon Palace would want to recoup a decent chunk of what they paid, but would be well within our budget still.

Downside is if you search his name on Twitter, you'll see a load of Palace fans who reckon he's useless.

Personally, I reckon Robinson is earmarked as much more of a striker role than CAM. So there will only be one more striker coming in.

Morrison will be the back-up CAM. Lundy and Osborn backup Centre Mid.

Two for each position basically. And then there's the second loan. Mount wouldn't be a surprise.

Ideally we need one of the higher end targets

Marriott wouldn’t be a bad shout if he could be got on the cheap. Looks a decent finisher to me.

Joao - would be a gamble worth taking in this league but not consistent enough for what re require imo

Gayle - wrong age and never cut it at PL level really

Not convinced at all by Mousett - 3 goals in 58 appearances in the PL. although admittedly only 8 starts.

I like roofe but seems similar to Robinson from afar?

Assbalonga - would be a different option but again not 100% convinced given injuries.

This is highlighting the importance of an OM or NM coming in. Fingers crossed.

In Marriott and Roofe especially, there are good alternatives to Maupay and we have signed Robinson already anyway. So I'm relaxed there, it won't be a season breaker if we don't get Maupay.

With McBurnie though there's a serious lack of good alternatives. We could even end up looking abroad. 😱

That's what I currently have in mind, with McGoldrick instead of Freeman to begin with.

With the 2 behind 1 attack option I just wonder whether we can have enough possession in the middle third to get the ball to them regularly, if a Duffy type isn't playing to knit things together with the CMs.

Thats the way Conte adapted the system for Chelsea and I liked how it worked. Think it will create even more 'overloads' down the wings as well with perhaps Robinson or Freeman then having the responsibility of the final ball rather than the wing backs who have struggled with this (particularly GB).

We should go with the current system that’s been fine tuned over 3 years.

Fail to see why shifting it to a different one would be a good idea until we know how it’s working at the level above.

We’ve been positive on playing 2 upfront. Imo we’d be stupid to chancge this straight away - the post Christmas run proved we could score and be solid at the back.

On the flip side, I fail to see how planning and having alternate systems, with the appropriate personnel for this, would be a bad thing either.

Would take Marriott over Roofe. He’s the next choice for a number 9 if Maupay doesn’t happen and McB isn’t a go-er.

Don’t forget Marriott is a Blade as well.

I think it's some of his family rather than him himself.

Also have to say I'd be underwhelmed with either Marriott or Roofe.

If he can avoid getting sent off, Morelos at Rangers is a handful.

And on a free, if Chris fancied a stretch project, Balotelli!

I think Famara Diedhiou (apologies, as stated this before but the question was asked) is a possible decent signing as I think we need some strength up there and physical presence.

Marriott would be a decent fallback option but after that I think we will be scraping the barrel.

Never been that impressed with Diedhiou when I have seen him, he is very much a poor mans Tammy Abraham.

If that's the Bristol City cart horse forget it. He is the king of easy misses.

Have Sharp's legs gone?

At the minute we are starting with Sharp and Diddsy.

I can’t think of a serous alternative to McBurnie, he ticks every box we require. Be much more disappointed if we didn’t get him than I would be if we didn’t get Maupay.

I get the comparison but I don't see that as a problem, as a poor man's Abraham. Tammy Abraham would probably cost £25m!
