Neal Maupay

It's interesting that Smith, having got the best out of him previously, didn't rate him last season let alone this. This deal would be ideal for them if the player/Brentford were up for it. Hogan might just be happy picking up a wage at Villa though.

Just been reading the VillaTalk forum and most Villa fans are saying that they don’t see how Maupay would fit in because Smith usually plays 1 up front.
They are saying Maupay would need to play out on the wing, otherwise he’ll mainly be back up striker.
Most say 20 million is too much to pay for a backup striker. They also think that other positions are a bigger priority.
So it’s nice to see that most Villa fans aren’t getting too excited because they expect him to come to us.

since when do clubs listen to the fans :D

Financially, I understand why we would want to string out the payment - but does it really matter if it’s paid now or a season down the line if the £ amounts are the same. It doesn’t change what we’re paying or what they receive

We can take out bank loans supported by the future tv revenue we will earn. Seems just a hard ball tactic by Brentford if this is the case but maybe there could be a breakthrough
Cash flow is critical to any business and taking a big chunk out by making early payment at any stage could seriously damage our ability to invest in any other areas.

I can't see any bank lending to two owners that can't even agree what day it is, and even if they would it would be barmey to mortgage our future over one player.

To be honest, it would serve us right for not getting the deal done last week if Villa come in and gazump us now. Fingers crossed it's just all talk 🤞

Even Villa don’t have an unlimited budget to be fair. The have also spent big in a striker already

- Been quoted £20m for Phillips
- After Cahill on massive wages
- after butland for big money

They have already signed by my estimate (£65m of players)

Bought targgett £14m, Wesley £22m, jota £6m?, mings £20m+, hauws £3m.

Hopefully this tips the balance in our favour but really does highlight what we are competing against

Your point re the owners is probably fair!

But that said when the cash flow is pretty much set in stone with the tv money over the next 3 years - lots of clubs borrow against this to finance deals until the tv money is recd

No different to when we borrow against the future brooks money coming in last year and probably used that loan for the upfront Egan fee.

So why shouldn't Brentford go to their bank and borrow against the Maupay money if they want to accelerate their cash flow?

Payments are usually structured over the term of the new contract and I don't see why we should do Brentford any favours.

We're not that desperate, or at least I'm not.

If true, the big drop in valuation of Maupay by Brentford would suggest that they do think he has peaked and are not confident that he will repeat last season's performance in the Championship. I would think that some of those that were interested will be re-evaluating the situation?

AQA
I thought about Morelos previously and can accept the current discipline issue to a large extent, but is he actually that good?

As for Roofe and Robinson, I think they'd be great fits who give us full flexibility. Both would score goals, and there's a strong argument to prefer those two to just Maupay. Roofe really impressed as a CF last season.

I think we should still be chasing Robinson even after the Maupay deal is sorted.

Wouldn't touch Morelos with a 10ft clown pole though I have to say!

I'm actually thinking of doing the whole tour, dependent on the inheritance situation and whether the NHS will have sacked me by then (I'm currently on the naughty step but I can't talk about it). Kavus Torabi, the current Gong frontman and formerly of other Greenwich Holy Trinity representatives Cardiacs (Yes make up the triumvirate) is an old mate going back to 1993 when I met him in the audience at a Cardiacs gig at the Camden Palace. Him and Steve Davis - yes, that one - interviewed Daevid Allen for their old radio show, and the next day I got a text from Kavus saying. "Don't tell anyone but I think I've just joined Gong!" And he had. Gong are also The Steve Hillage Band so it should be a rocking good night with power, peace and patchouli oil.
Are you going to this?

I’ve got tickets for Sheffield.

The player is Brentford’s - they have every right to ask for the money any way they want it. It’s up to us to decide if we want to pay it or not.

The new season in 5 weeks away - we currently have BS & DM as the first choice strikers. It’s getting to a stage where we need to make a decision to get a striker in and used to the side.

Given the relatively gentle first month of the season, hitting the ground running is vital.

And at the moment it looks like we don't want to play

Like I said, I'm not desperate for him but I do think that despite the protestations of their supporters, Brentford need to sell.

The fact that they appear to want to accelerate their cash flow convinces me even more that the best cards are in our hands.

They have made several other acquisitions and they are subject to the same profit and sustainability rules as everyone else.

It doesn't matter how loaded their owners are, they can't just chuck money at the playing side, ask Mr Chansiri if you need confirmation.

I'm sure we will have other irons in the fire, maybe even better options than Maupay

I'm relaxed, if he comes, he comes. If he doesn't, he doesn't and we move on.

Mo’ pay. It’s fucking Mo’pay. Motherfuckers.

“Please Sir can I have some More-Pay?”
