I think the riba laws (against charging interest) are separate from the gambling laws. That and many banks (including HSBC, which does business in Muslim countries) offer Islamic-friendly options now.

So he probably wouldn't object to a financial sponsorship as long as it offered halal banking.

Correct, I've had to clue up on this for one of my recent exams funnily enough. Ultimately the moral of it is that you shouldn't benefit financially from somebody needing assistance. It's nothing to do with gambling laws
