He’s a different player to anything we have. He’s the kind of clever player who may just be able to unlock a defence and provide some spark coming off the bench with 15-20 mins to go.
Provided we have protected ourselves financially with some form of low based salary, with performance driven incentives, then I don’t see any problem with it. To me, provided the numbers are ok, this signing is a fairly low risk, (potentially) high reward scenario.
We just have to manage our expectations with him. Hope for 20-30 appearances, probably mostly from the bench, and never playing twice within the week. Somewhere amongst that batch of games, if he has a couple of purple patches that provide some points we can probably consider the signing a successful one.
His commute has been dramatically cut, he’ll be back at home amongst family and friends. If he’s a normal bloke like the rest of us, this should contribute dramatically to his general well-being and enthusiasm.
One huge success of Wilder’s has been his ability to manage and protect his older players - Duffy in particular. Fingers crossed he can do the same for McGoldrick. All of these factors combined, have me feeling fairly good about this signing.
