Flat atmosphere on the Kop

We are top of the league and it’s quiet.

Come on, we were only confirmed as league leaders after the final whistle on Saturday. And the noise ramped up after the only goal in what was a dull game. I don't think many expected us to go top before Saturday's game.

Now we have a tough trip to Derby, and after that two home games v Stoke and v Wigan. If we're still top going into the Stoke game I expect it to be very lively.

As others have pointed out, most big clubs are yet to come to the Lane. The atmosphere was good v Villa, for example.

However, at the moment, it seems that for the atmosphere to be good we need to a) play a big club and b) play well and win. God knows what it would be like if we were 17th.

That’s the all seater curse. Unless standing comes back that ain’t going to change. And before anyone suggests we stand in the seated kop like they do at Anfield and Palace those clubs don’t have SYP and SAG itching to close areas of the ground off which they would do at the first excuse.

We don't need common sense and facts like this when there's an opportunity to say how utterly wank our fans are every week.

Not all our fans are utterly wank. Just the 99.9% who don’t support the team in the exact ways dictated by our 0.1% of superfans.

This.

Reading this thread I’ve become quite concerned that I’m not supporting the team or enjoying the game in the correct manner. Is there a set of rules I’m supposed to be following? For what percentage of the match am I supposed to be singing for me to be classed as not ‘utterly wank’?

I must admit I have looked at my phone from time to time during some of the matches. I know that one of our superfans doesn’t like that...

Is being called "utterly wank" worse than being called a "corpse" . It hard to know these days, it just used be slasher, clapper or Pig. Now we've got Bigger Blades, Better Blades, Bladey Blades, Ideal Blades, McCabists, Club killers, Patsies, Car Park Lickers and the FOTHs. The list grows daily.

Thank God we're top of the league....

I'm sure smartphones have a lot to do with it. At any given time about half the crowd are gazing into their phones or taking photos as opposed to watching the match.
Autograph books used to have the same effect in my day!

But clubs want a family atmosphere because these people spend more per “customer”. Songs about tits, fanny and United are diametrically opposed to family atmosphere.

As for Watford. Give it a couple more years at the top level and it will be like a morgue there.
And yet tits, and in particular, fannies, are absolutely critical to the creation of families. Some people....

Watching MOTD earlier, it seemed like half of them had fucked off by halftime at 3-0 down and many more followed shortly after when Bournemouth got their 4th.
They did according to this I read from a Bournemouth fan...proper ultras.
I've seen the slow concourse service mentioned, pity the poor Watford fans if you will. 1000s of them must have been stuck in queues for all of the second half, judging by the number of empty seats.
They have amazing Ultras, such is their faith in the team they didn't start making any noise or waving their flags until the 87th minute, hoping to inspire a remarkable 4 goals turn around.
Such a hardy bunch (not official figures, just my estimation) it took until the 73rd minute before the away fans out numbered the home spectators. Note to Republican, don't change allegiance to Watford, you'll explode.

Our crowds are much higher than they were under Bassett and Warnock, apart from our Premier League season under him. They are down on last season, but still historically high.
I suspect Saturday's crowd versus Hull was only lower than last seasons' fixture due to them bringing about 2000 less.

I think as others have touched upon, they are down slightly due to the red button/streaming option and some of the excitement falling away going into the second season. The latter of course will reverse now, so I'd expect to see our attendances edging back towards 27k.

Wait until we lose a game.........

Lost the dressing room
Doesn’t have a clue what he is doing
I don’t trust Wilder any longer
We should have bought Waghorn
We have no ambition
Who owns the freehold
A certain full back says everyone at the club hates Wilder.

Just to kick us off.

Just wanted ti say three sides was rocking today and it was a decent backing in the first half I thought too at 0 - 0. Getting bit tired of negative posts on the atmosphere so definitely time to give credit today! 29,000 for a game on Sky when we've been in mixed form of late is also worth a mention!

Best atmosphere all season today. Think the ref actually helped with this with his ridiculous decision not to award the pen.

What is interesting is ,that despite perceptions of some of our own fans, many commentators, pundits and opposing managers mention amongst other things 'the hostile atmosphere'....'it's a proper ground'....'the Sheffield United anthem' etc.

Also people i know who are fans of other clubs say to me how much they like coming to Bramall Lane as it's a proper atmosphere in a proper football

“Fair play to Sheff Utd. Proper club and fans, highlighted if it was ever needed how shit our home support is, got behind their team, shouted for everything and made it hostile, everything we don’t. Pulled their team through”

The ref sent me fucking mental, and 2,000 others near me too.

Now how much more enjoyable would it be if it was like that all the time?

And how many more points would we get?

The crowd made a huge difference today and anyone who'd deny that is deluded.

When it's hostile and loud it makes it so much harder for the opposition. Derby were all over the place. From the moment we got wound up, they barely had a sniff.

That second half is how it should be, with the supporters playing an active role. That's what I want from football.

And I bet Lampard's never quite had anything like that before.

Tactic for the future: Cause some bollocks on the pitch or in the dugout that provokes our fans!

Yep, Frank didn't look too comfortable in that second half. Seemed to be hugging the pitch side of his technical area. Hope you old bastards in the South Stand weren't being nasty to him and chucking Werthers.

Someone tell Mowbray that Wilder said he looks like Jimmy Nail's ugly brother.

Having decent opposition with a “star” manager helped, the jokes at FL provoked laughter when they broke out, bit of aggro on the pitch got the players and the crowd up, they’ll think twice about fucking bouncing in future..

The goalie though was hilarious, he panicked and got the defence arguing with him as he buffooned around the pitch in the last 20.. what was he on?

Its a genuinely hostile place for visiting teams when it's like that. The anger after their goal was channelled in exactly the right way and the noise was truly intimidating.

I always chuckle when I look across at the away fans and they’re just stood their with their hands in their pockets, “no point singing, no-one will hear them”.

As Ricky says, if the fans get their tails up in the homeward stretch we’ll have a right go at these playoffs.
