I am still looking for some top quality 'ready' Championship players. All for gambling on young talent like Blackman and Carter Vickers etc or lower league players like we have done in Thomas, Stevens etc but we do need some experience and quality that have proved they can do it at this level for me.

Stearman was the first of these, but I agree we need a couple more in the same mould.

I'm in favour of this kind of signing for defence.

We have an established back 3 and it's far from guaranteed that anyone coming in, even Lenihan at £2m for example, would dislodge any of the current players. We don't have a huge budget and we need various other additions. So I don't think now is the time to be splashing big money on a defender.

Our main problem looks to be scoring goals. And attacking players are more expensive. So it makes sense to save the money and spend it on those players instead. And possibly a central midfielder depending on who's available - I'd love us to get Jackson Irvine if we could.

I'm with you on the Jackson Irvine! I've got everything crossed we can do some sort of swap + cash deal with Brayford. Would also make the Australian half of my family suddenly much more interested in SUFC!

I hope we get him. Exactly what we need, strong, athletic and composed. This from seeing him play, not reading about him. Saw him in the U20 WC a couple of years ago and he looked like a man amongst boys. Seen him a few times since and has always impressed, for me he would walk into our team at the moment as an upgrade.I was very pleasantly surprised that we look like getting him as I thought that he was way out of our league.

"Liverpool type of investment"

"The prince will spend big when we get to the champ"

"We are chasing some really ambitious prem players"

im sorry this is not the ambitious - pretty standard/almost disappointing for the champ. cant have any kind of nerves in the back line especially a kid with no experience who is renouned for turning to jelly the second he gets on the pitch and had a nightmare against lg2 wycombe.

I will reserve full judgement until i see him play but it is on paper an un-inspiring signing.

He will surprise you. Played a few times last season for spurs and did well. I have been championing this guy since he was 17 and I think will be a better player than lenihan. Prefer to save money for a partner for billy.

Just hope you can get over the obsession with spending money as though it means something

Well thank fuck for that! I was worried for a bit that Danny Lafferty would have been the only Sheffield United player with a scanned face on FIFA!

Lafferty can cover at a push.

That's fine.

Saved our funds and we have decent depth now in that area.

Now it's time to spend on the area of the pitch we really need it.

I presume he will be looking at playing sooner rather than later, I see he is either a centre or right side so presumably stearman or bash to drop out if and when all available, as he has brought in stearman I presume it'll be bash? Be a shame if so, but onwards and upwards, bash on the bench is an asset but I would feel sorry for him

The view from the cartilagefreecaptain

built like a brick s—thouse. 6 feet tall and 200 lb, he’s not tall per se but has a low centre of gravity that makes him very difficult to dislodge from the ball. He’s also incredibly strong and uses that strength to his advantage when defending. Cameron also knows how to put a tackle in and is not afraid of using that size of his to his advantage by knocking attackers out of the way.

A good read and a bit of a mixed bag - especially spurs fans in the comments section.
Dropped a few bollocks pre season against PSG and Roma has turned a few against him.

+++++++
'He’s got to carry a lot of weight for his height, as a result he’s pretty slow and gets skinned a lot; it’s why he dives in so much. I can’t see him improving much more at his current size.

I think his mental reading of the game is slow, which makes him look slower than he actually is.

Needs to grows another 2-3 inches and stop diving in so much, top quality attackers will go past him far to easy if he dives in,

A loan makes way too much sense

He needs to be playing every game. His football skills are fine, but he needs to get experience and improve his positioning and decision making – the stuff that can only happen with game time against real adults.

He needs to go to a team in the upper half of the championship or even at the top of league two. Somewhere where they play attacking football and where he will be an automatic name on the teamsheet.

CCV is a long project, and we may not see him be starting level for another 3 or 4 years let, but prospects (and defensive ones especially) take time and patience.
++++++++++++

Shows that Wilder is trusted by top PL mangers (Jose and now Pot) to bring along their best youngsters, which can only be good for us.

I've heard good things about him previously - been in and around the Spurs side too.

Only 19 but has all the right attributes imo - pace and athletism (will be playing with the experience if Wright / stearman too)

Rate the Spurs academy - quite a few of the players that don't make it into their first team still tend to do quite well and are all technically decent so work their way back after dropping down.

  • Charlie Daniels
  • Adam smith
  • Tom Carroll
  • Bentaleb
  • Alex Prichard
  • Tom Carroll
  • George Moncur
  • Massimo luango
  • David Button
And that's ignoring the likes of Kane, sol Campbell
Don't forget Tom Carroll.

I think Lenihan would definitely walk straight into the side in central defence. Why else would we be interested in signing him for serious money?

I think Carter-Vickers will do the same whilst Stearman is out.

I've never heard of Carter-Vickers before, a bit like most folks on here. I also don't know anybody that knows him or has seen him play. So, all I've got to go on is what I've read in the last 24 hours. Seems to me the good points are his age, his physicality, his athleticism and his experience at Youth level captaining the US team. The question marks are over his positioning and willingness to dive into a tackle too early, some reports about awful defending against not just top European sides, but also minnows like Wycombe Wanderers, and the description of him looking "terrified" when playing in the first team.

I really hope that last point isn't true, because if a player is "terrified" or even low on confidence, it massively impacts on how they perform and affects others around them. If he's playing centre half and is nervous and behind him we've got the silently uncertain Blackman, it could be terrifying for all of us!

Let's hope he lives up to the positive reports about him. I doubt he'd be at Spurs if he was shaky as what some of their fans have said?

To be fair, I think if I was having to deputise for a steadfast player in, possibly, Europe's best defensive back line, I'd probably be a bit nervous, big boots to fill!!
On the other hand, he's got something to prove here, and he is deemed good enough to deputise in the role for a top 6 premier league club.
I say give him a chance, could do really well and maybe the war chest next year can keep him here?
