this for me is another plus from having sir chris at the club, he has shown how he gets the best out of players and that clearly hasn't gone unnoticed in the upper reaches of the top flight, the football we play now and his ability to bring a player on has seen us for the first time in a long time as a very good destination for these big clubs to send their prospects, it could prove crucial this season, especially after the prem squads are announced, i think we could end up with 1 or 2 real gems

I suppose the fact that he's got a 7 page thread about him in their forum at just 19 years old means he's a player that's been seen as a real prospect, even though he'd had his ups and downs so far. Most kids that leave top clubs out on loan hardly get a mention.

My best friend is a spurs fan. I asked him if CCV was any good, answer...

'Yeah, promising. Difficult to say from so little game time but can only be good for him to play regularly. Think Chris Smalling.'

I know Smalling isn't the greatest and I did chuckle when he said it with a sigh of 'oh no', but he was meant to be the next best defender when he was at Fulham, I remember that. I wonder whether he stagnated at Man U due to playing second fiddle to Ferdinand and Vidic for a long time. Sounds like this kid needs some games, like any young player does.

In wilder we trust.

What we need at the back, even when Stearman is playing, is a player who wins more than his fair share of crosses from dead ball situations because we are very weak and have been all pre-season. At Cardiff we were really vulnerable as at Malaga for example.

If the young lad does an EEL or even a Neil Collins, dare I say again, a player who gets his head to the ball time and again, almost unnoticed. O'Connell does it and we need a couple more. I'm afraid Bash rarely gets there at either end of the pitch, nor has Stearman as yet. Wright does his bit but is not the player to challenge the likes of that Cardiff centre half who won everything at both ends.

Our keeper is a big lad and will develop confidence hopefully but there are a lot of bodies to get through from the goal line. At 6' Carter Vickers has a chance to contribute in that way. As a young lad, if he makes the odd mistake in other situations then that is to be expected.

Let's make him welcome, enjoy his time here and when Spurs don't want him, which they won't in all likelihood, we may have a chance to sign him permanently before long.

Smalling would fucking smash this league. As would plenty of players who look 'shit' at champions league and international level.

But I get the comparison with Smalling when he started at Fulham. Carter-Vickers has been heavily pursued by the USA who are desperate for him to play for them and not England so he's certainly considered a very good prospect.

I'm not a huge fan of loaning defenders (I think I'm scarred by Nosworthy) but it seems our bigger priority is attack and if CCV is a cheaper solution for defensive cover/competition and frees up money to strengthen other areas, it seems like a sensible solution.

My Spurs supporting colleagues - including one who's watched him quite a few times for U23's, reckon he's a real prospect, said even one of the best they've seen at his age. Describe him as a big solid unit who's quick. They reckon he's a bit tactically naive and needs game time to bring him on.
Said that he's been probably their best player in U23's but got found out against Chelsea U23's.

Never heard of this lad but if there's one man who can help develop him into a top player?. It's sir Chris with the help of lord knill. In wilder and knill we trust. Utb

I think it is the perfect signing just to add some cover at centre back for the season.

If he does well then Spurs will take him back, If he is poor then we don't commit to keeping him longer than a season. I think we should all judge the lad on what we see rather than a couple of games for Spurs when at such a young age a kid can make a mistake. Even experienced players make mistakes. Great move for Vickers and us.

What i think you will see is a few loan signings coming in to add to the current squad to add to the numbers and add much needed cover while still leaving a pathway for our own young players to have a chance to progress over the next 1 or 2 seasons. As long as our young players are good enough.

I saw him turn in an awful performance for Spurs last season in FA cup v Wycombe. Maybe I just picked the wrong game. Same game I saw Blackman play equally poorly. So that therefore means he will be ok.
I've been trying to think back to this game. Didn't Poch just throw a load of kids in with a couple of squad players who needed a run out? I recall saying something to my Spurs supporting mates that it seemed a bit naive and reminiscent of when Fergie used to 'disrespect the cup' and a team of kids would get beaten by some lower league side.
Not fair to judge him solely on that.

Who would win in a fight between Carter-Vickers and Ebanks-Landell? Not football terms, I'm talking proper fisticuffs.

Reckon Carter-Vickers would have it because he looks like the kind of fighter who would try something dirty. Could go either way though. EEL has a big enough beard so he could hide a weapon in there or something.

What we can all agree on is that Ryan Leonard is officially the new Sam Morsy.

Andy giddings from radio Sheffield says we're close to completing the deal

So if he plays who makes way ?
Basham or Wright ?
Seems hes a little naive tactically so may benefit having Wright at the side of him

Well Andy Giddings has said he "understands" United are trying to sign him but he's not sure if it's a loan or a permanent. Don't get much more ITK than that

Whos that, Carter Vickers? I can't imagine Spurs wanting to sell him, but you never know.

Yeah Carter Vickers. Giddings know fuck all. He's about 16 hours behind as usual with the Radio Sheffield guys. Only thing I think they have broken is the Ched Evans thing

Smalling is 4 inches taller (if Google is right), but Carter-Vickers is supposed to be immensely strong and good in the air, although he isn't the tallest.

They really are the most amateurish set of no news journo's out there.

Their commentary really grinds my gears, they spend more time rambling on about various non-events during the game, ranging from 'the programme seller on John Street is getting soaked' to 'Accrington are 3-0 up against Forest Green Rovers'. I wish they would just stick to describing what is happening on the field. Countless times we have had the ball on the edge of the box only for the commentary to sidetrack onto how Keith Edwards got lost in the arse-end of nowhere on the way to Millwall on a Tuesday 3 years ago, then next thing we're defending a corner!

My favourite one was when we were playing Palace in our relegation season. Giddings was going "Here come utd now on the attack............we will go to Rotherham in a second there has been a goal here.....and....THERE HAS BEEN A GOAL HERE........1-0 IN THIS PIVOTAL GAME.........PALACE HAVE OPENED THE SCORING".

We were on the attack about 5 seconds before! I was half way through my celebration dance.

A lot of similarities to the Kyle Bartley loan with this one. Reckon he could turn out to be a great bit of business. Still need a bloody striker though!

Good article posted on the other thread... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...kers-is-looking-like-a-future-captain-america

I'm in favour of this kind of signing for defence.

We have an established back 3 and it's far from guaranteed that anyone coming in, even Lenihan at £2m for example, would dislodge any of the current players. We don't have a huge budget and we need various other additions. So I don't think now is the time to be splashing big money on a defender.

Our main problem looks to be scoring goals. And attacking players are more expensive. So it makes sense to save the money and spend it on those players instead. And possibly a central midfielder depending on who's available - I'd love us to get Jackson Irvine if we could.

Agreed. It looks another astute piece of business if not a “wow” signing. Low risk, low cost, should strengthen our squad.

I just hope the “wow” signing is going to come in the form of a matchwinning forward.

I've heard good things about him previously - been in and around the Spurs side too.

Only 19 but has all the right attributes imo - pace and athletism (will be playing with the experience if Wright / stearman too)

Rate the Spurs academy - quite a few of the players that don't make it into their first team still tend to do quite well and are all technically decent so work their way back after dropping down.

  • Charlie Daniels
  • Adam smith
  • Tom Carroll
  • Bentaleb
  • Alex Prichard
  • Tom Carroll
  • George Moncur
  • Massimo luango
  • David Button
And that's ignoring the likes of Kane, sol Campbell

Tom Carrol. So good you named him twice.

Ryan Mason

Jake Livermore

Peter Crouch

Stephen Kelly

Andros Townsend

Dean Marney

Quinton Fortune

Johnnie Jackson

Reece Oxford

Kevin Stewart

Jordan Archer

Jonathan Obika

David Button

Nathan Byrne

Loads have come through their youth system without making it into their first team regularly but having decent careers elsewhere.

Will he be the first yank we've had? Struggling to think of others. Only a couple of Canadians.

Exactly. - can't really see a down side.

Taking a highly rated spurs defender who's been in an around the squad is really no different or less ambitious that signing the like of izzy brown, tammy Abraham or Lewis baker from Chelsea or that ojo from Liverpool.

Just a less high profile position imo. Lots of the young players have all the talent in the world and just need the right place to show it because they are limited by fierce competition to the first team at top 6 clubs who can afford an international in every position.

People are less inclined to trust young inexperienced defensive players because their mistakes usually cost their team goals. Experience is considered more valulable in a keeper or defender for that reason. On the flip side, a young attacking player might approach the game with a direct fearlessness that you often don’t get in older players (like Brooks for example). For that reason, I would say this signing falls behind the likes of Abraham, Brown etc. Still, presumably relatively low cost and gives us cover in a position we need it in the form of a well rated player. No complaints from me.
