Wonder what the deal was with Clarke taking 9 from Lavs.....can't see Caolan wanting to give it up....seniority thing or maybe a bet....who finished last season as highest scorer gets the 9 shirt....could explain Leon's form towards the end of the campaign!
 
Generally good but my OCD is offended by:
  • Thomas wearing 8 while Lundstram wears 7. Should be the other way around (or Thomas shouldn't have a first XI number - he's not going to be first choice)

  • Stearman wearing 19. Don't ask me why but that should be a reserve midfielder/forward

  • Blackman wearing 27 when 12 (European sub keeper), 23 (international third keeper) and 25 (United's third keeper number as worn by Moore and Long) are available

  • Brooks still wearing 36; I'd have thought he warranted a number higher up

  • Carruthers wearing 44. What's that about?
 
Carruthers is probably a personal preference thing but I can't see Wilder being down for that as a rule.

And if I was Eastwood I'd be a bit miffed at Blackman coming in, seemingly taking number 2 spot and getting a higher number (unless it was requested of course)

I'd have given Brooks 7 or 8 if he wanted it.
 
Thomas might have been offered number 8 in negotations to get him to sign for us over Boro.
Think he's strictly a development player while January myself.

Carruthers has always worn 44 since his Villa days.

11 and 12 both missing, probably for our new forward and defender.

Eastwood will have wanted that for the 1, 31. It's a keeper thing. Don't think theres much preference from 31 to 27.

Yep, wore 40 at Villa. Probably wanted 4 here but that was in use.

I agree - but footballers are notoriously superstitious. No way will Baldock be first choice right back - I guess Freeman didn't want to ruin his luck. The other problem is with three at the back and wing backs the traditional numbering doesn't apply. For example where do 7 and 11 play?

Sub 'keepers are traditionally 13, Jake Wright has no particular attachment to that number.
Carruthers wanted 44 because of his Mum's birthday (assuming it's April 4, can't remember from memory)

Sweeping generalisation there Danny...different countries have different sub keeper numbers. Wright probably chose 13 because he fancied something different.

Germany: 12 (makes better sense to me: 12-22 should mirror 1-11)
UK, Spain: 13
France: 16
Italy: no traditional numbers
Netherlands: 12, 16 or 22

If we are honest Clarke is a No9 and Alavert really isn't one so I'm happy with the switch.
 
So as expected they're exactly what they've been wearing since they came back for training, same as happened last year, even though people kept saying that training numbers mean nothing.

Brayford and Done will get numbers if they're ever involved in a matchday squad, which might not take long depending on how seriously we take the League Cup. Last season we announced the first team numbers at the start of August, but by the time the first game arrived less than a week later, Kieran Wallace was already added as 17, which he'd been wearing in pre-season. Others like Eastwood and Brooks just got their current numbers tagged on the end later when they actually featured in a first-team squad.
 
Numbers mean bollocks now. The days of 2=right back, 3=left back, 5=centre half are finished. The number merely identifies the player and has no other relevance.
When I watch a game of football I always check to see how many of the players on the pitch are numbered 1-11. I find it strange that first choice players are happy to have numbers outside that range, for example John Terry being 26 throughout his Chelsea career.

Imagine Lafferty wearing #9!

The Wikipedia article on squad numbers shows some insight into numbering used by other nations, particularly Brazil and Argentina, which shows how players would bring the preferred number for their position with them when they moved to Europe. I recall Javier Zanetti wearing #4 at right back for Inter for many years.
