Trapped in my head
Perhaps a nothing thread but...when reading the rumours around our interest in the Villa youngster, Louie Barry, for a JTW loan deal, I semi dismissed it in my head as my memory told me that Wilder usually gets experienced players in during the JTW. Known quantity players as opposed to risky youngsters with high potential. For example, I feel JRS is a Wilder summer transfer but not a January transfer kinda player. Whereas Madine was very much a 'typical' January transfer player.

So, I pulled up some info from Transfermarkt to take a look. This table is supposedly all of the IN transfers during the winter transfer periods for all of Wilder's times as our gaffer. Sorted by age*.

I still feel he is a low risk kinda guy for January and prefers someone he can rely on as opposed to hope. Thoughts?

*I've bumped the players Returning from loan to the bottom, as they may skew the landscape a bit.

JTW is a lottery. You're unlikely to buy a long term player who will be impactful

I think folk get a bit over excited by it

Further emphasis on experience needed in JTW, multiple times in today's press conference. I just don't see him bringing in any of these rumoured youngsters on loan. Twitter rumour people have to get their clicks though, I suppose

If we are bringing in 3, I’d say 1 youngster like Barry or similar and 2 experienced players would be a good split. I do think more of an emphasis on experience, overall, given we have quite a young side.

I think the fact we've got loan spaces to still take advantage of, is carrying a lot of responsibility for us being linked to young players. If they're good enough for us to be interested at the top of the Championship, then the parent clubs aren't likely to want to sell, especially not in January, hence a loan becomes the only possibility. They will want to monitor the development and see if these players might be able to handle this level, to gauge their likelihood of thriving in the PL.

Realistically, we need players of a similar demographic to Souttar. Someone who has been around the block to a degree, but will still have a solid amount of time left in their career. I wouldn't be displeased were we to get a young player in who would improve the side, but we do need experience to ensure we aren't in a Sunderland-esque position - a squad crammed full of youth, who struggle to handle situations that an old head might thrive in.

Wilder has already said he hopes the squad will be more experienced by the end of January

Barry would be a fantastic signing though, despite his age. He's played lots of senior football and has scored a lot of goals in a position we're short in. He needs a loan higher up, so why not us?

I don't disagree, I'm just not sure Wilder wants to take risks on inexperience. 'Inexperience' could also include those not experienced at this level

I also agree, was saying the same to my dad the other day that Wilder will have a few Hanson's, Madine's etc lined up for a promotion push if he has the money.

I suppose the takeover could radically change things - let's bid £12mill for Barry!

Villa will want him somewhere where hes playing regularly and we can't guarantee that with our formation and Moore, Campbell and Brewster ahead of him

The problem I see with having a squad with lots of loan players is the Nottingham Forest issue where they gained promotion with only half a team of their own players and had to buy just about anyone to fill spaces and they were very lucky to stay up with a points deduction because of over spending plus the players they bought weren’t really that much better than they had (well probably a bit better) . I’d love a landmark signing but I know it’s not going to happen as that would be one hell of a gamble but long term if we gain promotion it sounds (ha ha) sensible.

I think he could play on the left of our three instead of Hamer, I see him as more of a winger though he's clearly done both.

Tried and trusted all the way for me right now, given where we are. We have plenty of up and coming young talent of our own already, but need to bolster this with people who are good enough / know how to get it over the line.
Do our longer term shopping in the summer, when we know which division we are in, and the budget we are working to, and have time to bed them into a new team and/or system. Right now, we need people who are ready to go from a 'cold' start. Wilder will pick those who still have something to prove ( step forward BBD), and leave alone the easy pay cheque hunters.

24 to 28 year olds with option to buy is hopefully the market we are in.

Pecks first season, one 18 etc
