McCabe pop at Adkins

Managers do manage, but when they constantly get the rug pulled under them with no time for replacements it makes their job a wee bit harder don't you think?

The rugs provided for our various succession of managers since 2007 have been deep piled, luxury versions fit for palaces in comparison to the rugs our opposition clubs have had in the Championship at the time and certainly in League 1.

Anyway, all that's been done to death.

We are in a new era now with a manager who will have to be happy with a new rug from Carpetright if he waits for the cut price sales. He inherits a shoddy, tired rug which needs throwing out. Robson, Clough and Adkins at times were shopping at John Lewis. Blackwell, Speed, Adams, Wilson should have enjoyed the quality rugs their predecessors bought but they wore them out until they were cast-offs.

No wonder that director bloke is making a boat load of dosh at Pyramid Carpets , Chesterfield Road , with all the rugs and carpets , blades have had in the last couple of years. As you say more competitive than John Lewis.

Wilder will finish up with Lino or mats from Home Base and still succeed.

Simple question for you to ask Wilder at 'Meet the manager' if he has one:

" Chris. Do you accept it's a fact of life at SUFC that we will sell our best players if a substantial bid comes in and the player wants to leave because he doubles/ trebles his salary and the proceeds of the sale are added back to cash flow which is already subsidised to the tune of some £8m plus each year by the owners?"

You talk about rugs being pulled Rodders. It costs a fortune just to keep the elements out in the harsh financial climate of League 1.

I have little doubt Wilder will succeed over the next couple of seasons. It's life up in the Championship which will be a new world for our manager but we'll worry about that at the time. League 1 is a new challenge for him as it is.

I've got a few boxes of carpet tiles in the garage if the club want them. FOC. They'll have to collect though.

My ideal scenario would've been to never see Hammond again and never see our Belgian chairman again, I'm just glad I got 50% of my outcomes which I suppose I'll have to settle for.

When a manager has spoke about a player like he did Hammond he wasn't going to go back on what he said, he would've looked stupid and all managers have their favourites. I'm not convinced that he would've signed Hammond to play for us next season though, he might have signed him on as a player coach sort of role, coming off the bench every now and then which wouldn't have been as bad as him being signed as a first team player and starter.

As I said though, I'm very happy that he certainly won't be here next season in any capacity.

Come on Wilder, sort this shit out!

Just blaming someone else for his own failings...............quite poor really.
How many managers is it now 9?

I'm going to defend McCabe here. He's not saying that he hasn't lade mistakes. Appointing Adkins wasn't one of them because he and the board appointed the best guy they realistically could last summer, it just didn't work out. The mistake could only be, as some think, was sacking Clough. At the time I recall the majority of Blades fans seemed to want him out, and those that didn't were certainly optimists because the football that season was as bad as this and yet Clough had Murphy at his disposal.

Onto the signings. I think he's summing things up there saying the legs had gone. On Woolford he isn't the player he was, obviously nor was Hammond. Sammon actually, in my view, was lazy and this amazing work rate we were expecting never materialised. Edgar was decent in my view and Sharp excelled but overall Adkins recruitment failed last season to add the three or so quality players we needed. Whether he was backed? Well that's another matter entirely. Its difficult to judge because only a select few know what Adkins budget was and how much the board could (FFP) or would help. I definitely think that Adkins lower league knowledge was poor when he joined, maybe beyond, because he kept going for reserves from the Championship, rather than up and coming players from leagues One and Two. I wanted Adkins to stay until THAT interview and then I thought enough is enough. Leave now and take Hammond with you! Finally. and I'll defend Adkins here, we don't actually know that Hammond would have been signed? The board might have blocked it anyway but if he did sign him then Adkins would know that Hammond would have to excel to prove people wrong and it would put Adkins and Hammond under imense pressure. I thought Adkins should have spared Hammond in the last game for that very reason.

The past is the past , and Adkins created his own problems , which appear to have a reoccurring theme about them .

With regards Hammond , if Adkins walks into another job pretty much soon , will he again want to take Hammond with him . Interesting to see what happens . Will Adkins become another Paul Jewell on the football managers scrap heap . His tenture at a Reading and Sheffield United have not done much good for his kudos , reputation or stock . If you was a chairman would you employ him , or give him a wide berth . I know what I would do .

SUFC2016 is it now? I will accept we are in a a new era when a different approach to our ins/outs is taken. Sadly the only different approach it looks like we'll be taking now for a few years is delving deeper into the bargain bin.

Sales of players who want to leave is a different issue.

The players McCabe is referring to will never be sold and we'll settle their contracts in all likelihood. Wilder will not field a midfield like we did for weeks: Hammond, Coutts, Woolford and Basham. As a group of four only one can run properly and can play a full 90 minutes flat out. That's the point your Chairman is making. He is effectively saying he would not fund the signing of Hammond as part of Adkins way forward.
And in my opinion Woody the Hammond situation brought about the sacking of Adkins Just as signing Brayford had a big say in the sacking of Clough, in my opinion of course with no Itk information.

We shouldn't have sold some of the players we did and failed to invest the money in decent replacements over the course of 9 years.
Sometimes owners should admit their mistakes instead of deflecting them.

Tbf, McCabe does admit to mistakes (as well as blaming Adkins) in the full interview, which I think this article comes about from.

Well worth a listen, for anyone who's not heard it yet -

Excellent post Booker there are some
Really good Replies on this subject
and most of us agree the Hammond situation and his comments in his last interview probably sealed his fate.

I believe the board were fully behind the signing of Brayford.

Have an almighty fucking like.

Add to that

“we shouldn’t have appointed some of the managers we did before arrogantly telling the fans we know best when it comes to managers. When a manager is a waste of space alcoholic, we should acknowledge that we should have stuck with the previous one. "

'Signed some of the players'...

Let's be reyt, of Adkins signings, it was only Hammond that 'didn't have the legs'...you can't argue that Woolfird didn't have legs...on backwards..perhaps, but they was definitely legs....Edgar got ok legs and Sammon, well generally regarded as not Adkins signing, despite having non-stop legs.

Billy got big chunky goal scoring legs and Baps got slick defensive legs...

So translate 'some' as 'Hammond' in McCabe-speak...

I take it you’re a leg man Esa?

Adkins used Hammond as his comfort blanket . For a man with forward thinking and motivational character , it just didn't work out . Adkins ideas are fine when dealing with millionaire players , from all around the world as in the premiership , but does not work with so called bread and butter league 1 players .

Perhaps Southampton saw this and decided Adkins had taken as far as he could , and the Adkins philosophy is just out dated and he has stagnated and not moved with the times.

Also is attitude may well need to change , who knows , but his stock as a manager as dropped , because of himself not the blades.

Finally we have a league 1 manager for a established league 1 club.

Previous manager- 3 league 1 promotions.

New manager- Never managed in League 1.

Some how translates to “finally we have a league 1 manager”

Agreed he does admit he has made mistakes, and in the interview on RS the one which contained the £8 million / £4 million mumble

He goes on to justify his qualifications to carry on making decisions, because he has made mistakes in the past

Crackers, he isnt the best guy, he makes the decisions because he owns the Club, its his Money, they are his (and his families) assets

Still the wrong fuckin guys, checkout the Graph, Players Sales Vs League position

UberKnob he is, in fact I think he is an addict, dabbles in the Club, spends money, then goes into a spiral of regret

Then repeats it again, he needs help

To me, it looked like they were behind the whole signing instead of Clough. I can't have thought he would have protested against it but it seemed to go against NC's whole approach as manager to sign one marquee player; I mean imagine how many Scottish midgets he could have bought instead?!

UberKnob he is

A graph showing manager appointments and sackings to league position would be equally relevant! It all went wrong when McCabe appointed Robson followed by Blackwell. Blackwell did well in his first 6 months but I wanted someone more proven than Blackwell after. We finished 3rd in fairness but the football was awful.

Deane and Agana came out of the bargain bin, Beattle 2nd time came from Harrods.

I've said before he has the traits of a serial gambler.

'We shouldn't have signed some of the players we did, they don't have the legs'.....'sometimes managers should admit mistakes rather than paper over them'....paraphrased from today's Star.

So as suspected Hammond, amongst others, cost Adkins his job. The fact Adkins was going to sign his mate on a permanent contract despite it being obvious to everyone else his legs have gone must have filled Kev with as much dread as it did us !

Kev steps away from yet another bad manager using his usual statement.

So the reason we haven't gone up, apart from bad luck, is that we've spent too much money. All that money has prevented us from giving our youth players a chance.
We haven't had a player break through since 2011. That's because we've spent too much, not because they're not good enough.
Had we spent a lot less and relied on MacFadz, Diego, Dimaio, Ironside and Whitehouse we'd have done much better apparently.
