Wilders PL signings

The signings this season have been okay. We have relied on previous signings by the same management group. We win games due to tactics and team spirit etc

This year with the money spent I think they will have expected better individual performances.

For £20m I expect a player to win us points out of brilliance. Maupay / Pukki has won points on his own. Every goal we score seems to be a well worked move from the training ground. But we need a player to be able to do some brilliance and do it on his own.

We win games because of "tactics and team spirit"? Have you any idea how ridiculous that is? You sound like a Wednesday fan.

Tactics and "team spirit" emphasise talent, they don't replace it. The players we have are excellent footballers, if they weren't we'd still be in L1.

£20m players win games on their own? Who that we had access to has done that regularly for thst price? Maupay and Pukki create goals on their own? Have you actually watched them play? They are both last man/back shoulder players who shoot on site from through balls.

If you are going to slag the team off, watch them first ffs

Tactics and team spirit? Fucking nonsense

20 mil winning points on his own? You want to have a look around the league and see the fees paid for the return they’re getting. Joelinton cost 50mil, same with Seb Haller. You can go through the signings if you like, you’ll struggle to find many who’ve ‘won points on their own out of brilliance’ for their teams. Those players command huge fees usually.

They shoot on sight obviously. I have no idea what they do in a construction setting 🤦‍♂️

Fans have a similar adaptation problem to the league as players do it would seem.

I think it's fair criticism. Go back 12 months when we were fretting over how much we'd be allowed to spend. If someone had said 60 mill and fast forward 12 months not one of those signings is close to player of the season and they have been eclipsed by the journeymen. Wilder is a great manager but our recruitment for prem level players needs looking at.

Let's get this straight, wilder hasn't made any mistakes in the transfer market regarding our Premier league signings, including Norwood and Egan as they were clearly building blocks....

The fact we have a manager able to get this quality of player over the line is quite refreshing, Dan burn saga anybody?..

I see maupay being knocked about as the better signing, but if you want a player who wants to be in the south of the country as a priority then you'd better be a London / southern club because the player wasn't coming north for sheff utd.. Man utd, may have better luck with that one..

We have not made any errors, players with high price tags, remember we're new to this moneyball stuff, are of the right age, and have a possibility to create future profit in any circumstance other than a career ending injury..

We are staying up, if not for the incredible job the management have done from top to bottom, we'd probably be hoping to sing that as the season closes..

Some people just don't get football and then feel the need to rant after a bad defeat, I get it.

Spurs payed £12mill for Llorente a few years back. Was this a bad signing because he didn't dislodge Kane?

Fleck needed cover in case he got injured or turned out to be trash at PL level. The pittance we payed for Freeman to fill this role is good business, same goes for Osborn.

We could not attract any player wanted by another PL club (bar Norwich). Still, if we signed Callum Robinson, were in the bottom three and he was not getting games, you could say it was a bad signing. When your existing players step up (like Kane has, and like Sharp and Didsy have) you can't have a go at the Robinson signing because he hasn't failed to perform at PL survival level, he has failed to perform at top-half PL level.

I would prefer to see Callum Robinson starting ahead of both McBurnie & Sharp.
Didzy, Moose, Robinson ahead of McBurnie & Sharp all day long, we lack pace up top.

Looking back Robinson had the hardest job and did very well retrospectively, we now realise how hard it is to score a Premier league goal, think Robinson was hard done by on some levels, hope he comes back, he can occupy defenders for 90 minutes which doesn't do any harm at this level..

To me, this season is very much similar to our first in the Championship. Excellent start, somewhat losing our way as the season goes on (although it's not over yet of course!).

None of our signings in that first season in the Championship made a huge impact to begin with, many were poor. This was partly due to our rise far outweighing the quality of players we could bring in.

Baldock - did well, but there was still the ongoing debate of him versus Freeman at the end of the season. Not first choice.
Stevens - a bit hit and miss. Was a lot of chat the following pre-season of finding a replacement. The following season, he was he best left back in the league.
Ched Evans - The equivalent punt type signing that Ravel was this season.
Nathan Thomas - One for the future. Victim of our rise.
Richard Stearman - Solid pro, reliable - see Jags/Osborn this season.
Lundstram - Now known as Lord Lundstram, very much the Sander Berge of 17/18
Donaldson - Started well and then sort of disappeared, though injuries played a part. Mousset may well be in a similar mould, only with age on his side.
Heneghan - Young talent for the future, almost no opportunities to play. This year we brought in Retsos for cover, as much more expensive 'one for the future'
Ryan Leonard - Linked for a long time, didn't get too many chances to show what he could do. Luke Freeman this season is one we have had our eye on for a while, not had many chances, but has not put in a bad display for us.
Lee Evans - A steady addition. Some good performances, but not set the world alight. I'm thinking these could be words used to described McBurnie
Ricky Holmes - Another victim of the team moving too fast too soon. In his defence, he wasn't provided too many chances.
Jamal Blackman - Solid keeper from the top 6. Obviously in Deano we have an upgrade on this.
James Wilson - Out of the blue loan signing in January (Zivkovic)

The following season we had time and some reasonable funds to properly take stock of our unexpected position and properly improve on the areas of weakness. We signed four key players to strengthen the spine of the team - Henderson, Egan, Norwood and McGoldrick.

My long-winded point being that I fully expect Chris & the team to step up the recruitment again next pre-season. I fully expect us to look at those key areas of weakness and address them. I also fully expect some of the scapegoat new signings to kick on and to become players and for some of the signing this season to leave.

I agree.

Maupay's got nine goals. Their next highest is three. This includes League Cup goals but doesn't give a breakdown on that. When you think we've got Mousset on 5, Fleck on 5, McBurnie and Sharp on 4. Mousset and Sharp both beaten Maupay on goals per minute too. So you can't read too much into that, but you definitely can't say that we're struggling because we lack a Maupay. Sharp and Mousset combined are doing just as well if not possibly better.

I can't figure out why the strikers are coming under fire when the midfield and defence were so bad on Sunday. Norwood and Fleck were giving the ball away, Berge did little to make his presence known, and the defenders had an absolute Mare (Basham aside).

I'm on the record as saying I don't like McBurnie and Sharp together but as individual strikers they're doing just fine.

Fully agree with the last point. If Didzy or Mousset (the good version) aren't playing we struggle to create. But Put Sharp or McBurnie with either of those 2 and we'd have something to work with

Exactly. And I don't know why people are surprised by this. Last season in the Championship the two players with the highest conversion rate were Sharp and McBurnie. Neither of them are out there for their silky skills, they're there because the stats show they bury chances. I don't think we signed McBurnie expecting solo goals and it's weird to criticise him now for not doing that. More than that, we've spent the last three seasons playing a style of football revolving around creating high % scoring opportunities and we shouldn't abandon that now. What we need is a younger Didzy who connects the attack and midfield and allows us to get the wingbacks up the pitch again.

I went to Swansea last season and McBurnie was the best player on the pitch second half and he did it by dropping deeper and linking play. He's not Wayne Allison, he's god in the air but the giant athletes at the back for a lot of Prem teams (VVD, Mings, Kabasele etc) are too big and strong for him to win the majority of headers

Fair. I just think we need to get back to what we're good at. It should be obvious to anyone that we're so much better with McGoldrick on the pitch and so that's the thing we need to find a younger version of. If McBurnie can do that, great, but I get the impression he's being seen more as a Sharp Mk II.

And still, it baffles me that Egan blunders a red card, Stevens nutmegs himself, but every other thread is about the strikers.

Our complete and utter inability to sustain an attack for 2 games has been an issue. But the fact our midfield is 30 yards from the forwards is the problem

Like Carlton Blade says, along with Leroy Fer he was the best player on the park and gave Egan, JOC and Bash enough of a hard time for Wilder to think £17mil is value. I also think we've got a great player on our hands, it'd be nice to give him a bit of service and also allow him license to drop back and try and link things rather than blasting the ball up to him like a prime Wimbeldon side.

Forgot about Fer. Another example of us struggling with athleticism. It's very hard to find players as technically good as ours who are also athletic. We only have Didzy, Moose, JOC and at a push Bash/Baldock who could be classed as both

Yes. You clearly have because several people have pointed it out to you already the games which he’s made a difference

A saved shot against Palace and people saying he did well at Chelsea when it was Mousset who did everything. The manager doesn’t rate him or he would play him. It’s not rocket science.

Fleck was injured we didn’t use Freeman or Osborn.... you kinda destroy your own argument.

IF HE DOESN'T CUT INSIDE AND TAKE THAT SHOT/CROSS, LUNDSTRAM DOESN'T POUNCE ON IT AND WE DON'T SCORE

MOUSSET DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BY THAT TOKEN BECAUSE IT WASN'T HIM THAT SCORED, IT WAS A ROBINSON GOAL AND A ROBINSON CROSS WHICH WAS A ZOUMA OG

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Despite what we've spent, we haven't really found anyone good enough to displace the current best that we had in the Championship and in some cases League One where in theory the likes of Fleck, JOC, Basham, Sharp should be warming the bench or be gone altogether as they lose their places to better signings and more expensive alternatives as they get pushed down the pecking order. Simon Moore is the only one who that's really happened to.

Huge testament to these players who have proven their worth, particularly Basham who has been in some awful teams and been awful himself at times. With Wilder not being a sentimental type but still having these guys as the mainstays of the squad shows that they're doing their jobs in his eyes or they'd be out the door. The constraints we have as a club both financially and that a lot of top foreigners will only just be cottoning on means that new signings are no better than the players we have and can't currently justify their selection at the expense of players who have simply spent time playing below the levels that they're capable of, turned out we had Premier League footballers in a squad that wasn't in the Premier League.

It's up to the likes of McBurnie and Berge in particular to prove that they should be the first names on the teamsheet when they're probably the two who are most easily replaced by someone else at the moment.

Fleck was injured we didn’t use Freeman or Osborn.... you kinda destroy your own argument.
Because he thought Lundstram would be better, which is reasonable as he's been great this season.

Without hindsight, Lundstram could've been awful at prem level. Be good if you actually tried dealing with my argument: players need cover, the cover isn't a failure just because they cost money and don't play.

Berge, McBurnie we could sell right now for what we paid.

Freeman, championship sides know is high end quality. He goes for pretty much what we paid for him.

Robinson goes for the same or more.

Mousset roughly what we paid if not more now he’s actually scored a few goals.

Osborn would go for about what we paid.
So, we bought a pup for a quid and sold him for... a quid. Scintillating stuff this.
