I trust the two midfielders and 5 defenders to be able to handle most breakaways when we’re caught upfield.

We weren’t exactly slotted often in the past 3 seasons playing that formation were we? It’s hardly gung ho.

Like it or not the type of striker you want us to buy would be 20m plus, x2. Not gonna happen.

But then Flecky and Lunny don't go forward which TBH has been our biggest success this season.

Give me a brilliant no.10 and an absaloute battering ram with pace as no.9.

They’ll still need some service...

Hence the brilliant no.10 and overloads and Mitrovic
So you’ve spent 40 mil there possibly more. Joelinton cost 50mil and he’s rubbish. Where’s the rest of the money coming from to patch up the rest of the side? We need a keeper, a RWB, a couple of defenders, a midfielder if Freeman goes, 2 if Lunny goes too. And we’ve already been told there’s going to be a tighter budget.

Sell McBurnie £12m
Sell Robinson £5m
Sell Freeman (4m)

Thats £19m incoming

Sign Mitrovic £20m
Sign Buendia (£10m)
Sign Konza (£8m)

Thats £38m outgoing

Net spend £19m

Lunny is retained for 12 months anyway

Keeper who knows but it won't break the bank if we don't keep Deano for another season.

Rest - out of contract players to fill gaps (and there tonnes of them available in a buyers market)

What makes Buendia so good and proven in this division? And he’s not a brilliant number 10 either.
Why are Villa going to sell Konsa?
And of course it’s expensive for a keeper

Buendia is class IMO and Messi would be too expensive

Villa are going down and will have to sell due to FFP

Simon Tracey/Alan Kelly/Mel Rees/Paddy Kenny - yeah really expensive.

Would absolutely love Buendia but is there some clause or something I don't know about? Surely he'll be going for alot more than that

Perhaps 352 is beginning to have an impact on how we play.

It has without question kept us in the division which was the primary objective.

352 doesn't lead to us scoring many goals but generally makes us hard to beat. 352 will eventually cause us problems if we don't tweak it again.

To progress as a team we either have to find 2 x strikers of better quality (in a 352) or amend back to a more conventional PL formation.

3421 - 3412 - 3511, some sort of diamond at the top of the pitch or permutations of all.

352 has got us to 2nd season - perhaps it needs to change?

I think £10m max will get him as I don't see any of the top sides wanting him. Might be miles off.

I'm sure last preseason we played with 2 attacking midfielders and a striker for some games? We defo played it for abit vs Betis. Must be in Wilder's plans at some point

Is this thred at joke? We're 7th in the Premier league when I just looked!
We're building a squad, it takes time. 4 years ago in league 1....look how far we've come! Not all signings work. Not at any club, but generally ours have been good and you can see why they were brought in. Only odd one was Robinson, but at the price was worth a gamble!

I would have liked to have seen us revert back to a 3-4-1-2 more often than we have this season. I think it became clear pretty early on this season that we were more than competent at this level. I think it's also made teams more wary of us and a couple have tried to stop us playing.

Particularly these first two games after the restart, we've struggled to break teams down. I know there's other factors at stake now, however I think we could have done with a player in between the opposition defence and midfield to break the lines.

I was apprehensive to start the season with a lineup almost matching our championship one, but up to now they proved me wrong. However, going forward I do think we need signings with first team mainstay as a priority. Perhaps we are approaching the next phase of PL adjustment, but we shouldn't forget that this current crop of players have been sensational for our transition to the top flight.

Agreed. I was hoping that our safety for a 2nd season may mean a bit of tweaking. For me we have to modify 352 going forward as relying on a brilliant defence and a structured midfield is fine but only for so long - Berge has shown how difficult it is bringing in new players to what we have done for three years.

CW & AK have a difficult job going forward. We simply have to score more goals or look like we are capable of scoring more - either through better forwards or a better collective from midfield.

The flat 3 has certainly been a positive tweak this season, however I think for certain games its due a change. I can remember we used the flat 3 a couple of times in the Championship and we definitely seemed to struggle to have that same attacking impetus. I do think teams are changing how they set up against us and we've seen this over the course of the season.

As you say, we are safe now and look more than competent at this level which I think should give us the freedom to tweak and push a player further up when things aren't quite going our way. I think allowing Fleck the freedom to push on this season has brought him on ten fold as a player but I think he's now also singled out as a danger man for other teams so its only natural that teams will make it more difficult for him to get in the game. Let's not forget, when he was injured at the start of the season, there were discussions on here as to whether he should come straight back in the team ahead of Freeman or not. I'd like to see us use Freeman a lot more in that number 10 role now with a view to using it more often next season.

For memory the first time we used 352 was the bouncing day massacre which was effective be we only had 37% possession that day.

We move to 3412 (I believe) at HT when losing 2 nil to Chelsea - where it worked.

It still doesn't appear to be starting formation out of choice.

I believe it was JOC who let slip before COVID shutdown (in an interview) that we were working on a "new" system in training. That followed a Leicester player who said they'd been working on a new formation for 6 months in training before they put it into action in a game.

Perhaps we're doing the same. I would fully expect CW & AK to be planning now for next season and beyond, but like today and Villa it just gets so frustrating when you know we should be doing better.

McBurnie definatley.
I'd doubt that.

We bought a young championship striker who'd never played in the premier league.

If we sold him in the window we'd be selling a forward with 30 odd premier league appearances and with 4 goals to his name with the man u and Brighton goals added to his agent's youtube reel. Daft as this sounds there are only 23 forwards who have scored more goals in the premier league this season. Pepe at £72m has scored the same amount as Mcburnie.

I'm not sure that Berge has done anything to put his market value up, but the rest have probably all gone up in value based on being Premier league players

Moose (Wilder clearly doens't rate him)

Yeah, this is obvious. Nothing to do with the fact he wasn't fit when we signed him and then had major personal bereavements to deal with, whilst being in his early 20's.

It's that Wilder doesn't rate him, even though he's our top scorer and smashing it on goals per minute played.

Where do you get these ideas from?

Open your eyes.

Which of those players would you say have depreciated in value?

Two things; firstly the post covid footballing landscape is a funny one to judge, and it will probably subdue player values irrespective of how well they’ve done (relatively speaking).

Secondly, a player needs a willing buyer, which PL teams would want them, let alone pay what we’ve paid for those players if they were all put up for sale?

Berge might attract interest from the lower half of the PL, more than likely Spain or Germany, but not for what we’ve paid.

McBurnie might attract interest from a promoted Champ side, the same for Robinson. More than likely they’d be bought by an ambitious Champ side, because that at the moment is their level. We might break even on Robinson, or lose £1m. We’d not break even on McBurnie, and do well not to lose £2m.

Freeman and Osborn would end up at the level they came from; mid table champ for a £1m less than what we paid for them.

Moose? Possibly a French or Belgian side might take a chance or a top half champ side, again at less than we’ve paid.

Teams aren’t going to be throwing money about in the summer.

We are 7th. That is all.

No it's not . We're 7th. on the back of some outstanding performances earlier in the season when we dominated good teams for large parts of the game and were a joy to watch .

Even before the lockdown , whilst we managed to scramble a few good results we were not repeating that same level of performance and , since the restart , we have been generally poor particularly in an attacking sense where we have shown a complete lack of ambition and creativity .

Whilst this will have no impact on our Premier League status for next season , it is not something either the fans or the management of the club can afford to be complacent about , not that I expect them to be so .

It‘s second half of season syndrome, teams are beginning to work you out, no longer the surprise package. Also with the big money signings, maybe your Manager is not up to speed of spending in that market? Had the cash and wanted to make a statement. We all know he’s obsessed with The Wednesday and breaking transfer records and spending £17M here and £20M there was probably more for a Sheffield Star headline?

When are you due back at school? Perhaps irony will be on the curriculum next term.

Played for Swans in the PL
I hadn't been aware of that. From checking wiki he started 2 or 3 games at that level a couple of years ago with a dozen or so sub appearances.. I think my general point that we signed a championship striker and would selling a striker with premier league experience and goals stands up though.

I remember reading last season that we'd need a 15-20 goal striker to cope in the premier league. That was never going to be the case, it is striking how few players get that sort of goal return at this level
