Who is the best player ever to play at Bramall Lane?

Strange how this isn't replicated in cricket. I have always acknowledged fine performances against Yorkshire or England that I've seen and thought nothing of it.

Yes, me too. They are two entirely different games, aren't they (at the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, you can handle the ball in cricket). The slower pace of the summer game lends itself to a more cerebral appreciation.

The cricket following public has changed a good deal though, and not for the better in some ways. One of our own regular correspondents adopts a fervent, football-like approach to his cricket watching that is totally alien to me.

Always wanted Yorkshire and England to do well, but having seen the likes of Viv Richards, Richard Hadlee, Barry Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Shane Warne, Michael Holding and many others give world class performances against either or both I have to applaud. I suppose with cricket love of the game surpasses any partisanship, or at least it should.

Totally disagree db. I think Best would still have commanded a place in one of the top 4. I also think he would have played for longer because of the strength of the current regimes and managers/support networks. I honestly believe that he was better than Pele. Would Pele hild a position in a top 4 team today? Probably yes.

You can honestly believe it. That's your prerogative, but he wasn't. Nowhere near. Nobody ever has been and nobody will.

Please reply if you must but there's no room for debate on the matter, so I'm done. Some things characterised as matters of opinion are so close to being matters of fact that it becomes a distinction without a difference. Gary Sobers is another active example. There simply is no valid case for anyone else being the greatest all-rounder the world has ever seen. So it is with the peerless talent that was Pele.

Absolutely. I would add the great Jos Buttler...

:)

One of the best performances against United Bert has ever seen was from Duncan Ferguson for Newcastle, away in the cup.

Andy Carroll gave Morgs a tough time at the Lane in 2009. I thought he might go on to be really something until I found out he was made of chocolate.

I've said in a discussion with a mate that Carroll reminds me of Duncan Ferguson. On his day, unplayable, but often injured. Whilst I love little dribblers, watching a massive bloke who can actually play football is an awesome sight.

If we're talking about best opposition player performances I'd have to throw in Kabba against us when he was on loan at Grimsby. I would've signed him up then & there on the strength of that display!
He was awesome that night. Got a standing ovation from the Blades fans when he was subbed off.

I was one of the ones on my feet. It just shows how much football has changed when a young, pacey, direct striker could be bought for 250k back then. I'd bet if our promotion season happened in today's climate we'd have been dealing with 10 million odd bids for Kabba in January after the way he started that season. Nuts.

Of my era (1994-now) at the lane, if we're talking the best individual player to set foot on the hallowed turf it has to be Ronaldo.

That said...his open goal miss from <5 yards was glorious :D

Can't believe we're onto 7 pages now and no mention of F.S. Trueman. Unquestionably the world's greatest ever Yorkshireman.

Have we had this one?

Sosnicine. Dynamo Kiev.

Might have spelled it wrong. But he was impressive. As were they. Anyone remember that game?

Edit: (Vadim Sosnikhin)

Paul Scholes in our Premiership season. I knew he was good, but didn't realise quite how good.

I've never seen one footballer control the tempo of a game quite like it. Always in space, elusive, took the ball on the turn and spread the play in one swift movement. He just seemed to be on the ball all the time and always seemed to have so much time.

It really was wonderful to watch, an experience I'll never forget. England should have built a team around that man from France 98 right the way through to his retirement. Big waste.

A Maltby lad who moved to Skipton. He was still on TMS when I started listening and was tedious beyond belief. in fact he makes Boycott look self deprecating.

How's about:

Michael Palin (Blade)
Captain Cook
Guy Fawkes
Dick Turpin
Brian Clough
Alan Bennet
Eddie Waring
Joeseph Rowntree
Emily Bronte
William Wilberforce
Titus Salt
Harry Brearley
Amy Johnson
J B Priestley

I think miserable old Fred is well down the list

For me it would be Best,Passerella,Currie and Montgomery.
Not necessarily in that order.

Must admit he was a bit of an old curmudgeon but I think that was part of the show. Your list narrows down quite a bit though if you stick to those who played at Bramall Lane. Guy Fawkes would have shown our chavs a thing or two on how to do pyros.

The underrated genius that is Arturo Lupoli.

Sobers v Bradman is interesting.

Bradman was the greatest batsman who's ever lived, and it's not even close. Sobers could bowl as well, though, and is arguably the greatest all rounder (though others have a case). Both were test captains, Bradman probably the better one.

Heresy perhaps, but I think there's a good argument Ronaldo is a better player than Best was. Ronaldo is what Best would be if he'd stayed away from booze and focussed on the game.

That Rooney display many mention above was a great performance.

Best was as good as Ronaldo pissed up.

Best applying himself like Ronaldo would be so far off the scale it is unimaginable.

Ultimately Kendall was a huge disappoint. His first (half) season was great and the football had me drooling. Second season we lost Cowans; recruited Spackman for the role, who was poor, and I found the football really sterile and nothing like as fluid. Hutchison, again, was ineffective for us. The all action, free-scoring midfielder did neither for us. He even hoofed it from time to time...

Then there was Charlie Green's puppet...

Got to clap Kendal off the pitch at Wembley and reflect on how close he had taken us.

Liked Kendal and understood why Everton was such a draw.

No doubt the move to Everton was playing on his mind and the demon drink didn't help the second half of the season.

Seem to remember bobby Zamora (no laughing please) ran the show when we played Brighton. Steve bull always seemed to score against us as well if I recall
