Who is the best player ever to play at Bramall Lane?

In the game Ronaldo played, Wayne Rooney delivered the best performance I've ever seen by a player at the Lane. He covered the entire pitch, scored both goals and was absolutely outstanding. Ronaldo was more bothered about pulling off pointless tricks and missing sitters.

I remember a pre season friendly (google tells me in 1999) against Chelsea where Zola played and looked some player. Scored a peach of a free kick if my memory serves me right :)

.....but the OP asked for the best player, not best performance (pedantic I know) :p

My mates young un...was stood on the kop...ball landed on the kop, so he gave it a right wellie to get it back on the pitch, only trouble was some blokes head got in the way and he went down faster than a uboat on a crash dive...funny as buggery. He was alright and just got up laughing turned and smiled at mates young un..

Stan Bowles QPR followed close by John Collins Fulham .

Not everyone's cup of tea . One was a complete showman and the other run the game for 90minutes

Agree with you about Rooney's performance in that match. Best ever display at the Lane for me

Hard to say George best was better than Ronaldo, it's a totally different sport in those days, Ronaldo with his speed strength and fitness, would be scoring 10 goals a game if he played in George's era, George at his prime would struggle to get a kick in today's game at the top level it's moved on so much, the top players are world class athletes now

Best was a truly great player but can't remember any great exploits at the Lane. Same goes for the maestro Charlton and firecracker Law. In truth we never really feared them under John Harris. I particularly remember a 2-1 at Christmas (Jones and Birchenall I think) which was pretty comfortable and George hardly got a kick.
Best was probably tired and emotional by Boxing Day.

A big difference is the weight of the ball and condition of the football pitches . The footballs were like lead weights not like balloons , and the pitches were mud not like snooker tables or a balling green.

Could some of these super stars cope with conditions 25 years ago , great athletes or not .

Also diet ain't beer , steak and chips anymore with the occasional fag :D

Came in to say this - even during the warm up he looked an unbelievable talent and presence. Different class on the day.

Though I remember watching Zola getting clapped off for a pre season friendly against us and he was another who was in a class of his own.

Not read through the thread so hope no kne has posted this yet.
Best player I saw was Gary Sobers who played for the West Indies against Yorkshire in August 1963. WI won and Sobers scored 100 not out and took 5 wickets in the match. Went onto to become probably the greatest cricketer of all time.

Sobers v Bradman is interesting.

Bradman was the greatest batsman who's ever lived, and it's not even close. Sobers could bowl as well, though, and is arguably the greatest all rounder (though others have a case). Both were test captains, Bradman probably the better one.

Heresy perhaps, but I think there's a good argument Ronaldo is a better player than Best was. Ronaldo is what Best would be if he'd stayed away from booze and focussed on the game.

That Rooney display many mention above was a great performance.

I'm from the more modern era & like in every sport its impossible to compare era but for me, the greatest all rounder is Jaques Kallis I put on a best international 11 thread, as batter Kallis was the 3rd highest test scorer with 13289 runs & had a higher batting test average than Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting & Steve Waugh. then as a bowler he took more wickets than Michael Holding, Richie Benaud only a few short of Derek Underwood

Yes, I had Kallis in mind. Imran Khan also has an argument, and to a lesser extent Kapil Dev and Botham.

The sole purpose of football is to score goals and Greaves is the greatest British goalscorer that ever lived. Nobody even close.
I'd argue that it's also to prevent your opponents from scoring more than you but Greaves was indeed a genius. Every modern day striker has a little bit of Greaves in them. I consider him to be one of the players who were so far ahead of their peers they shaped the way football has developed.
