Dozens of posts on dozens of threads this week with people still worrying about getting to 40 points.

FFS discard the gloom.

I don’t give a fuck what happened in 1975, 1994, 2007 or 4 years ago.

I’m living for now and enjoying every moment.

This is different; we are in the Premier League and have made a clear statement that we intend staying here for a long time. Forget about the 4 points we need to avoid relegation.

We win convincingly when its easy, we grind out a result when its hard and we put in solid performances against billion pound teams.

You should be learning the words to Abide With Me and making sure your passports are up to date, not worrying about getting 4 points from 13 games.

Jesus. If we actually got to the cup final I don't think I'd be able to sing abide with me through the tears. It's just iconic, and something I still never think I'll get to experience.
 
I kind of agree with the OP. We might not be playing as well lately, but even the best teams struggle to get past us, and when we can win ugly, like yesterday, we have nothing to fear. As I've said before, we could even go unbeaten from here on. I certainly wouldn't expect more than 2 or 3 defeats at most.
I'm hoping that we get a surge when Sander beds in, and when Didzy comes back, as well as the new flying Dutchman.
If others choose to remain cautious, fair enough, but this is not like days gone by, we have Chris Wilder, and he is the difference. He just doesn't do failure.

There is a big difference between gloom and realism. It is literally not true that we are safe, and no sport is concluded in advance. Complacency is not a good frame of mind for the participants, and realism is a good defence mechanism for fans. Those who have been through a succession of failures, many of them improbable, over many years, have experienced a heightened sense of joy at the experience of the Wilder years; I suspect that the majority of those who peddle gloom on here (after Liverpool away, or slagging off individual players) are those who don't factor in the possibility of failure. As the saying goes, it's the hope that kills you.
We are not safe from relegation (there, I've said it), and I am thoroughly enjoying this magnificent season.

I fully understand your point, I just don’t understand the pessimistic view point of anyone, I’m just not like that.

I expect everything and when I don’t get it I don’t criticize anyone. I suck it up, let it fester and wait till it makes the success feel a million times better.

This is my million times better.
 
Look, you set your targets for a reason and you can't hit anything further without securing that one first.

The reason I'm still looking at that 40 point mark isn't out of negativity, it's because the sooner we hit it the further we can look to exceed it. The day we reach it is the yardstick by which we can measure just how comfortable a season it's been. It'll be the moment for me that the season becomes party time for fans knowing that every game remaining is another chance to rub it in the face of every fan and pundit that told me we'd be rock bottom.

I have every faith that day is coming. Soon.
 
It’s not impossible but it’s very unlikely. Not likely enough to be genuinely worried about. Obviously, the quicker we can get to forty points, the better, as it gives us a better chance of getting fifty.
 
Shakes head to clear it. Only remaining question for me is, do we go full out for Cup or concentrate on Champions League or Europa. Relegation, give me a break, and I'm still haunted by our early 90s Chelsea away loss
 
Why didn't he post this 2/3/4 matches ago? It's ok to be full of confidence and shouting from the roof tops now, me? I think we will still struggle, finish 18th. loose Wilder and Knill and end up in financial turmoil and have points deducted. You need a balance in life, thats all.
 
Is there anyone with more time and inclination than me willing to put a table together showing available points for the bottom 8? For example, if they have to play each other that takes 3 available points out of the equation, I'd love to see our relative safety in this respect.

2. Are Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenal entertaining the possibility of relegation?

We’re a top half team. Even if some of the fan base don’t believe it yet, the players, management and board certainly do.

Beat Bournemouth next week and that’s 39 points, which is close enough to this arbitrary target of 40 for me. Then it’s three months with no pressure, with the players playing with greater freedom and confidence. This season has been fantastic so far but I can see it getting even better.

We usually get stronger in the second half of the season. If our targets under Wilder have been promotion, playoffs, promotion, survival then this is the longest we’ll have had to play without pressure and really express ourselves. We could be in for some truly spectator results.
 
Penalty shoot out v Huddersfield gets me; in a pub with 2 other Blades and one of the players relatives. Jumping around like nutters they were, it was like they'd never seen us snatch defeat from the jaws of victory before. After Simonsen skyed the last penalty, we said our goodbyes and the room cleared in about a minute. I sat there just finishing my pint and the only other occupant, a fat prick of a Man United fan tried taunting me. It meant nothing.
They say everybody has their own Viet Nam...

Of course there will be pressure, staying up was the target at the start of the season I guarantee that won’t be Wilder’s target now.

With the season we’ve had so far and the players signed in the window, a bottom half finish will be disappointing now. We need to keep the momentum going as long as possible and carry that into next season.
 

Lucky you I stood in a pub in Rugby all alone to watch the debacle unfold!
