The point about Uriah Heep is that his supposed humbleness is a pretext for exercising power over others. He is not truly humble, he just manufactures a situation where his apparent lack of social esteem becomes an advantageous quality. What he really wants is power.
As others have pointed out, humility would be a better word to choose (and is a better trait). No-one can brag about having humility - but you can brag about being humble. Given that, in this context, it's an excellent word to choose if you are going to have a bit of a dig. It's a way of showing your actual superiority to those that think you are beneath them.
I do get the "Uriah Heep - grasping manipulation and insincerity ". Hence why I mentioned it, although I don't believe that was CW's intention.
To me, humble implies that the apology was because Aston Villa are a big club and we're not. I would like to think it was for showing disrespect and would have been made if it was Manchester United or Accrington Stanley.
