Warnock Ranting

That the only game you went to?

No.

That was a relegation that we really should have avoided and Warnock is certainly not blameless, but to claim he was guilty of sabotage is somewhat over the top.

There were actually many good performances in the Premier League. Even though it was a huge disappointment to get relegated we did perform far better than most people expected us to do.

If we're talking sabotage I think West Ham and The Premier League decision makers are at least deserving of some mention. But I guess Warnock put them up to it. ;)

Buying for the future didn't help either. Still something he never explained. We were clear. Then his attention turned to the press and how hard done to he was.

It wouldn't matter if he'd won every game that season, he was happy to publicly engage in a rift with Kevin McCabe and more than willing to walk away. The only reason he didn't go to Portsmouth is because they appointed a better manager in Harry Redknapp.

I don't forgive anyone who shits on this club, there are certain ex players who I despise equally as much as Warnock for doing so. So please don't think I've made a special case out of your idol.

Anyway, I'll carry on supporting Sheffield United, you can carry on supporting Neil Warnock and we'll leave it at that.

You clearly don't support Sheffield United, because you want to dismiss several of the better years of the club's recent history.

Warnock is not my idol. I just happen to think he is one of the 4 best managers we've had in the last 60 years. The other three being Harris, Porterfield and Bassett.

I would put Harris top of the list and probably Bassett would come second because he kept us in the 1st division/Premier League against incredible odds. that said, the football played by Warnock's sides was far easier on the eye than that of Bassett's sides. Porterfield comes fourth because he actually received substantial financial backing and out of all of them is the only one not to have got us promoted to the premier league.

There may be a fifth one to add in the next few years. A certain Mr Wilder. Too early to call that one, but we will see what happens over the next few months and years.

As I said. He wasn't blameless. But to accuse him of sabotage tells me that the accuser is allowing his personal hatred of the man to overwhelm all perspective.

Someone who cheats is a bit more guilty of sabotage than someone who makes a few poor decisions.

It is true that we were clear. But at that time I remember looking at the fixture list and thinking we had a tough run of games coming up and were unlikely to get many points from them. I was devastated after the draw at home to Everton. I regarded that as a must win game and felt we should have won it.

Warnock can't really be blamed for the fact that Kenny made a completely unforced error when he dropped the ball into Johnson's path and then tripped him up. That really was 2 points thrown down the toilet. Just as the Davis/Gerrard clanger also cost us two points against Portsmouth in another must win game.

It's a matter of principle. I won't have anybody acting to the detriment of the club I love, no matter what their record is like. I saw pretty much every kick of the Warnock era, I enjoyed certain parts of it very much. He destroyed all that for me in 2005 and he's made it no better with his attitude toward us since.

I feel we'll be going round in circles forever with this. So I'll just say that I'm delighted with the current state of affairs and my belief in the man we have now. I'm enjoying it very much and I hope you are too.

Peace to you.

So did Brian Deane.

His record shows that he didn't act to the detriment of the club though. He may have made some poor decisions over the course of his time here, but it is somewhat difficult to say we were not better off when he left than when he came.

Warnock made a few mistakes , not flawless by any means ..still grateful for what he brought To the club ,
some of the better times of being a blade for 40 plus years .
I knob to some but held In high esteem by most supporters of clubs he's managed and the chairman which is rare .
Sometimes ridiculous antics but effective and passionate , made ordinary players into legends .

So its alright for Billy to shoot off for more money but not Warnock?

Yes, it is.

When you're a young footballer needing starts and out of favour at your existing club.
Not when you're a manager stomping your feet over a new contract when the owner has already said they would negotiate once the agreed aims are achieved.

Also, very few of his ex players have anything remotely bad to say about him. Says it all really.

Interesting.

What about Brian Deane. Whichever time you choose that he left he didn't need starts. He always started. He wasn't out of favour. He was idolised and quite justifiably, still is. And the second time he wasn't a young footballer.

Do you hate him?

That's a better example, again I don't hate Deane but he doesn't have hero status with me, great player but no blades hero for me.

My two blades heros from that era are Simon Tracey & Dane Whitehouse.

Warnock is a class manager and if you meet him, a decent fella. His schtick is exactly that. Anyone who can get that many promotions with his longevity is a quality operator at this level.

We came on leaps and bounds under him as a club, had some great times and he’ll always get a good hand from me at BDTBL.

Fair enough. But I feel that he was a major factor in giving us our longest run in the top division of English football since the 1960s.

Edit - 1970s!

100% but then he buggered off for more money to a rival. Only one step better than him joining the pigs.

Players have short careers, therefore they pursue their best chances of achieving success and wealth. (Billy however has gone on record as saying that if things had worked out differently he'd be a one-club man).
Lots of players move on to bigger things. I don't begrudge anyone as long as they go about it in a dignified manner. If Walker, Naughton, Maguire or DCL came back as Uniteds opponents they'd get a rousing reception from me.
On the other hand, arseholes like Adams, MacDonald, Slew and Kilgallon would get a swift round of fucks.

Bert is having trouble recalling Warnock ever celebrating when one of his teams scored against us but he does have a very vivid memory of Sharp giving it the big one when he scored against us for Doncaster.

True, but in all honesty I do have some sympathy with players who do that, because it often isn't just their decision. Sometimes the club wants them gone so they can get their hands on the transfer fee.

Mick Jones went to Leeds. But I would never have any ill will towards him, because I think he has stated it wasn't a move that he asked for or particularly wanted. he was happy with us, but the club told him he was on his way. Probably a bit different in those days. The player probably had a lot less leverage.

I have a vivid recollection of Colin saying unprompted how he "would love" to see his Cardiff team beat United in the pre-match build up in August.

I believe what Billy Sharp says. I really do think he would have been at United for his entire career if the managers at the club (including Warnock!) wanted him. And I believe he would probably have done that even if it disadvantaged him financially.

But when he came to Bramall Lane with Crystal Palace when Bryan Robson was our manage he did not do anything provocative at all as far as I can remember, even though Palace beat us and it was only a few months after he had left us.

Well he came back to around half the wage he was on at Leeds by many accounts. That's a very rare thing in football. Only Dane Whitehouse had that unusual level of loyalty.

We were a pitiful enough sight at that point already to be fair!

He's never said that he'd love to beat us. It's his job to win games, never for one minute has he ever held a grudge against us.

Vinnie Jones came to us from Leeds on a substantial wage reduction. He did it because of Bassett's powers of persuasion.

Probably wondered why he did it with all the abuse he got from some parts of our support.

Personally, I think he was a crucial element in us avoiding relegation. Not because of his footballing prowess, but because of how he seemed to galvanise the rest of the side.
