Arrive early and visit Leigh-on-Sea, 5 pubs that were ok in a cockle selling area, but The Mayflower and The Crooked Billet stood out. Walk back to Chalkwell or even Southend itself along the sea wall and about two miles and very pleasant views over the estuary.
In town itself try The Alex for sport and craft ale, The Railway for the alternative vegan protest vibe with vinyl decks coming from a pulpit, The Olde Trout for solid ale and then to Van Looys chippie (£2.50 for chips, sausage and gravy).
And then go anywhere other than Roots Hall, where unless we have a serious wake up you may as well spend your money on upgrading the chippie to a restaurant or doubling your ale or pub ration. A really pleasant day out apart from the pitch offering. To be fair, the best I've seen for a while, but just simply not good enough at creating anything other than trouble for ourselves. I love United and the great days out, meeting top Blades and seeing the country, but it's getting to the point where the football isn't worth the £22 to get in...
Plus you could always do what one sensible Blade did and smuggle his bird in at half time for nothing... And yes we do know who you are... Saving money by hitching is sound, but smuggling your lass in for Nowt is so sensible...
UTB ( but not this year!)
