This is why we won't get promoted

It was absolutely typical of what happens to us in these sort of games and a perfect example of why we won't be promoted.

Every single time, for one reason or another, games like today tilt in favour of the home team. Quality, luck, approach.... whatever. We just can't win these tight games against decent sides. We can't ever just take a point, either. It has to be a defeat.

Today should have been 0-0 all day long, but obviously it has to be a 'should've been 4-0' in order for us to have any chance of squeezing a 1-0.

It was another hideous goal to concede today, to throw away another point that will ultimately prevent us achieving anything this season. I don't know whether Freeman got a shout. I do know that he should've dealt with Carvalho much better. And I know Wilder shouldn't have started him today - bringing Baldock on was almost an admission of such.

And the automatic 8/10 Norwood again threw possession away countless times by trying to make himself look all brilliant and technical. Forest's best attacks started with him.

But.... a shitty 1-0 away defeat (with no injuries or suspensions) isn't the worst way to go into the derby. Unfortunately for us though Wednesday might have bottomed out with that shocker today.

Forest are NOT a top side.
They have virtually no goal threat and don't look anything like a top side.
We are overly reliant on playing our very best 11 and we don't perform with any changes to the formation or preferred personnel.
Any one of about 8 teams could win this division this season.

Hasn't Grabban got something like 10 goals in his last 11 matches?

So you think a side will get promoted losing say 15 in a season? If we did we'd be a laughing stock in the PL. OP correct we cannot consistently beat the better teams. Unlike those great sides in the past. Who (if alive then) can forget Blades 5 Cardiff 1. Now that was a thumping of a promotion rival.

To think we always seemed to do well at Forest. Must be CW's bogey ground.

Well one win in the last 15 league games at the City Ground (9th December 2008) would suggest we don't do well at Forest. Before that, our last win was in 1993...

Re. today, I'm surprised anybody is surprised. The Wigan game last week could have ended 5-5 - against a team who had only one own goal in their last four away games. We've been punching above our weight for some time, but I think it's fun and enjoyable. Unlike that shower of shite at Hillsborough.

I was there! Sat in the old cricket pavilion on the top miles from the action, and then on Saturday on the Kop to see us slip past Watford 3-0 and promotion to the old 1st Division! Happy days

It's a very tight league and we will lose games narrowly on occasion. We will not always play fantastically well it doesn't work like that. We had 2 key enforced changes with Duffy and Basham who have been two of our best players. Forest can defend. We dropped Just the one point we deserved and most would be happy with. Was not a poor performance just not one of our best. We usually respond well to this kind of a setback - great to keep our edge for Friday and we are still massively outperforming this season. Perspective is a bitch.

Again Wilder went for it with the substitution of Coutts for McGoldrick and going for a more attacking formation.

I'm sure he hoped we'd be strong enough to dominate the game and force them back, but instead we saw some similarities with the Derby second half, where they ran straight through us a couple of times. Norwood and Fleck had far too much space to cover, and it was a luxury keeping both strikers on (neither of whom were very involved) while adding McGoldrick behind them.

In general we did miss a link between midfield and attack, so McGoldrick was probably needed. But in hindsight I think we should have sacrificed one of the strikers.
We just aren’t the same side with a flat midfield three. Yes we may need a top finisher but a serious backup for Duffy (Callum Robinson or Luke Freeman?) would be my priority cash buy in January with the striker being a Prem loan

Last year when Sparks came on board Wilder didn't know him, wasn't sure what to expect and was a little too cautious resulting in the disappointing performance against them.

Today's team selection to me says that he now knows what to expect off Sparks now and the team Friday will be the strongest possible to try and smash em.

We can put them so far back they'll think it's '66 again.

Forest closed us down and we struggled to get our passing game on point plus they also defended well. We lack that extra bit of quality

We can't beat the top sides and we don't have much depth and we don't win when we don't play well and Norwood is shit sometimes and they're unfit especially Freeman he always looks nackered and Wilder makes bad substitutions.
Dummy’s out then....
Knilly’s got big ears anall.

79 would do for me ;)

We hugely overplay when in and around the opponents penalty area.
Sharp and to some extent McGoldrick are shouldering a huge burden.
Clarke is struggling to score.
I don't rate Woodburn or Washington.

Consequently we are always vulnerable when we don't turn possession into goals.
Our defence is ok but a decent defense earns you a point at best.
Forwards win you 3.

I have been around 8 times and seen one draw in this spell. Our record there since the mid 90s' has been applaling - apart from that one Brian Howard winner in the above and a cup win; we have gone there lost a lot - I know as I have seen most of them!

I dont think Forest did close us down or defended that well. We never put them under any pressure and when we had it we gave it away; often under pressure. I think Forest were there for the taking; as were Derby and wer Bristol but you are right we dont have that bit of quality/flair to break teams down. We have to pass through them and lack that maverick that can really unlock defences.

Forest are 9th highest scorers out of 24, scoring 2 more than Wednesday. Grabban is 9 in 15, the next highest scorer there is Lolley on 4. They've basically scored 1/4 of their season's tally in 2 games, against Stoke & Bolton. If you were at/watched the game yesterday, you'd agree with the op. Forest are an extremely mediocre and limited side; whether that's the players or the manager or a mixture of both. Wigan were more of an attacking threat last week. A team with any ambition of promotion would've found a way to get something from the game yesterday. Like they did to us, like Bristol did to us, and like Stoke did to us. Their keeper is crap & wasn't put under any concerted pressure, because that's not our style. :)

I got slaughtered a few weeks ago for pointing out the fact we are totally incapable of beating good teams away from home.

We couldnt do it in 2016-17, we couldn't do it in 2017-18 and we're struggling again this season.

So far we've been beaten quite convincingly by Middlesbrough, Derby and Nottingham Forest.

We never led in any of those matches and we scored a grand total of one goal.

It's starting to get very concerning because our most likely method of promotion this season will be through the play offs where we'll have to get a decent result away at a top six side.

Long way to go yet , stop fretting , beat them fookers on friday and everyone will be in seventh heaven, however lose on friday and .........................!

Basically, we're absolutely crying out for Brooks.

Oh well. 8th will do.

Sorry G, just reread my post. I didn't mean it the way it reads. :)

I do agree with the OP in the sense that I don't think we'll get promoted. I'm on record as saying I think we're an upper mid-table team, we just happen to have put a run together that sees us currently near the top.

Lewis Grabban does has 10 goals in his last 11 games in all competitions though, which would indicate that Forest do indeed have a goal threat.

Leeds United are top of the league - by virtue of cheating their way to a point against Forest, a team that managed to scrape past us on home turf by virtue of a lucky deflection (though Freeman should easily have stopped that ball coming in if he'd not been flat-footed) and now we've got no chance of promotion and will finish half-way down the table. Thank Christ Chris Wilder is in charge of the Blades and none of these whinging fans!!!

If wheels are gonna come off it will be between now and Christmas.
