Tony Pritchett anathema in our household.

'Progress', that's an interesting one.

Internet, social media, football forums, kids staring into screens, worse if anything here in Vietnam, obsessed, couples at restaurant tables starring into phones, alcohol, hooliganism mentioned so much on this thread, diving, shirt pulling, wrestling at corners, Blade against Blade on here - progress!

'Internet, football forums, (kids) staring into screens..'

Woody, less than 45 minutes ago that's exactly what you've were doing.

Not disagreeing with your final statement but where would you have told the world about 'The Good Old Days' in the Good Old Days? By writing to 'Tell it Tony'?

Tony Pritchett anathema in our household.

It was Tony Hardisty (not Pritchett) that answered the letters in the "Tell it to Tony" column

Best car I ever had.

0 to 60 in an afternoon and a nice little shelf for the Werthers.

Were you driving it in the late nineties? ;) Amazing what a good bit of marketing can do, making Brits believe a German Bonbon is a traditional British sweet. You should have said "cardboard tube of sherbert" or maybe packet of these: black jacks

Going through the turnstile's on John St. climbing all those steps and then paddling into the gents at the top ....

Happy days ...

Bob Socks thinks Everton fans started it and in 1965
Absolute,y. I remember that home game in 65 against them, they had took over the whole of the patch behind the goal half way up the Kop, first time that had ever happened. At half time a fight broke out, and a Blade was giving it all he was worth sorting out a few of them, until the Everton kid pulled a knife from his jeans back pocket, Fukkin ell - I kid you not - everybody dispersed they ruled the roost after that - nobs. Also remember a cricket stump being flung backwards at full pelt and hearing some poor sod scream out from behind, scary times, not at all 'good old days'.

Eddie Colquhoun had just put through his own net to make it 2-2, Tudor came on and scored the winner. The kop was divided near where I was standing, cue mayhem
Wednesday fans were on the John Street side of the Kop according to Bert's memory.

If memory serves me right (for once) that was against Eintracht Frankfurt who had been a beaten finalist in the European Cup the year before by Real Madrid, Di Stephano, Puskas et al.

I think that we beat them 3-1
We also played and beat them in some American match.
I can still see their Goal keeper saving a Ronnie Simpson shot. Ronnie was our pre Woodward hard shot expert on the left wing and he caught that shot perfect for the top corner, the goal keeper dived across his goal and while in mid air brought his fist up to punch it over the bar

The irony of Dixon of Dock Green railing against people using the internet whilst apparently posting on the internet from Vietnam.........

I remember Ronnie Simpson scoring a goal after just 8 seconds in at match at Burnley. We won 2 - 0 and I think he scored both.

Cricket at Bramall Lane.

Sharp, Padgett, Wilson. V., Wilson. D. Illingworth, Close, Binks, Trueman, Aplleyard, Boycott came a little later.

I've named 9 who rolled off the tongue. Who were the openers? Sharp occasionally, Padgett too, but who else?

Sutcliffe for a while as captain ( gentleman skipper, couldn't play much)

Benches, cushions, Tizer bottles to collect 3d deposit, wags, pavilion, gentleman entrance separate from players, non electronic scoreboard, Sheffield United cricket team played their season at the Lane and I watched them from the pavilion balcony times many., Could wander round the whole pavilion. Remember Johnny Wardle ,, talk about charisma.

No technology ( DRS?!!) no food stalls,

Cricket indoor nets where the hotel car park is now. Easy to watch the greats practice.

Still remember Trueman charging in from the pavilion end. Still remember Truman batting, aiming to hit the pavilion clock, No. 7 bat, we all stayed to watch.

No aggro, no phones, no radios, no cash in the sport; like a different planet and so much better.
Openers were probably Stott and Bolus.

Remember these at every ground on the touchline ?

I remember watching these driven in from one corner and parking up by the pitch. I was too young to realise the drivers may be missing limbs etc, and envied their privileged view.

Like glasses and braces , a bit of a fashion statement ? :)

Actually it is a valid point for this thread, maybe an irony though I can't see why.

Here I am in Vietnam in a mid range hotel with WiFi in every room and all areas including grounds.I'm here on an independent travellers holiday for 6 weeks which in itself is truly astonishing considering my background, this country's history and the fact that in Mallorca in the 60's we had to cross the island to hear our full time score and only knew package tours abroad. I've loads of time for all that and loads more including fantasy football even. I even watch some telly from all around the world. Watched Spurs game live in my room last night, imagine that 50 years ago!

What a treat to have access to the forum for news and opinion on long lazy days or in the short times on busy days. Access to friends and family on What's App swapping photos instantly and talking for free. Researching homestays and hotels on Tripadvisor with complete trust in the reviews.Absolutely outstanding accommodation here for 20 pounds or so. Where would we be without internet now but remember we didn't have phones in the 50's, not in our house anyway, no local radio, no sports live results programmes , certainly no foreign holidays, no contact with home when we did travel.

What changes our generation has seen. There are constants though. We are a selling club and always have been! Another constant is our wonderful support. Another is we never win anything of note.

Thanks for the link Axel.
