I remember one afternoon off school ill watching England v Brazil on TC, with Colin Grainger scoring twice in a 4-2 win. I know I was proud to see a United player on Tv playing for England. Then we sold him to Sunderland.I recall that apart from the FA Cup final, the England v Scotland game during the home Championships and the European Cup final were also shown live on TV. That was it. I also remember one year the FA Amateur Cup final was on TV
Walthamstow Avenue v West Auckland, anyone else remember that ? Walthamstow Avenue merged with other London clubs over the years and have now morphed into Dagenham and Redbridge FC.
The nights just fly by in my house
I think you`re correct in that. I seem to remember us playing Swansea of all teams home and away Christmas Day / Boxing Day in the 1950`s. Could rely on British Railways steam engines then !The last Christmas day game was in 1957-8, I think.
Well done Silent ! just testing. With thanks.1960. It was Derek Wilkinson who scored both goals. Howard Wilkinson was in our books at the time but never played for our 1st team. His debut for Wendy was in Sept 1964
1. Maximum wage.
2. No Bosman- will that be changed after Brexit I wonder?
3. 1 black player in the whole football league.
.
Eintracht FrankfurtI remember us going all international and playing a German team down at the lane.
1 no league cup.
2. No paint trophy etc etc
3. Dick Wragg, John Short, John Harris.
4. Eric Taylor
5. Tony Kaye, Peter Swan and Bronco Lane.
6. No security stewards.
7. No announcers
8.No alcohol
9. Players tunnel on John Street, wire netting cover.
10. Linesman were allowed to make decisions and put their flag up!!
11. No diving.
12. No shirt pulling
13. No wrestling at corners
14. Three or four handshakes on scoring, nothing more.
15. No yellow or red cards.
16.Temporary stand on cricket pitch for big games and 57000 capacity.
Exactly !probably the biggest thing that's changed no ones mentioned
no substitutes and no recaro seats
you could beat everyone else in those days as it really was 11 v 11
if man utd turned up and 3 werent at it , they were easier to beat
the only things in the dug out were the trainer and a bucket of water with a magic sponge in it
magic as it cured cracked skulls broken necks and knee high tackles and a foot higher a kick in the wedding tackle . cruciate ligaments required just a dab of liniment
from starting watching in 60 61 to 70 dont remember ever hearing the term cruciate knee ligament mentioned, , a player who was carried off on a stretcher with a bad leg injury played the following week but with 2 pairs of socks on with masking tape wrapped round them
Dave Powell was a regular starter until he got injured in the 2-2 draw at QPR in March 1971Exactly !
The same 11 played every week throughout the season.
As a kid , I remember that once substitutes were allowed , I used to feel sorry for the substitute because he had virtually no chance of getting on the pitch ...........I think it was Dave Powell in the vintage 70/71 promotion season (no time to look it up).
Who said I bought them ? Sorry Bert![]()
Who was the sub then Silent ? Frank Barlow ?Dave Powell was a regular starter until he got injured in the 2-2 draw at QPR in March 1971
Maybe you were thinking of Tudor being the sub for many of the 1969-70 season? For the 1970-71 season we had different subsWho was the sub then Silent ? Frank Barlow ?

"Oh no Frank Barlow, anyone else but Frank Barlow"
That was a big hit back in the day![]()

Yes. The Green Un headline that evening wasI think King Tudor was the sub that game when he put the ball through Grummitts legs to secure a 3-2 win against Wednesday
Used to get my Green un from the paper shop on Smithywood rd ,the owner sometimes took a mini bus to away games and was a shirt sponsor last season.
He also sold toilet rolls ,which use to get thrown into the goals when the teams came out ,I tried once but the thing never unravelled and just landed in the penalty area intact.

Colquhoun's own goal was Wendy's 1st goal (top photo). Jackie Sinclair made it 2-2 (bottom photo)Eddie Colquhoun had just put through his own net to make it 2-2, Tudor came on and scored the winner. The kop was divided near where I was standing, cue mayhem

Cricket at Bramall Lane.
Sharp, Padgett, Wilson. V., Wilson. D. Illingworth, Close, Binks, Trueman, Aplleyard, Boycott came a little later.
I've named 9 who rolled off the tongue. Who were the openers? Sharp occasionally, Padgett too, but who else?
Sutcliffe for a while as captain ( gentleman skipper, couldn't play much)
Benches, cushions, Tizer bottles to collect 3d deposit, wags, pavilion, gentleman entrance separate from players, non electronic scoreboard, Sheffield United cricket team played their season at the Lane and I watched them from the pavilion balcony times many., Could wander round the whole pavilion. Remember Johnny Wardle ,, talk about charisma.
No technology ( DRS?!!) no food stalls,
Cricket indoor nets where the hotel car park is now. Easy to watch the greats practice.
Still remember Trueman charging in from the pavilion end. Still remember Truman batting, aiming to hit the pavilion clock, No. 7 bat, we all stayed to watch.
No aggro, no phones, no radios, no cash in the sport; like a different planet and so much better.
'.........like a different planet and so much better.'
Not disagreeing with your final statement but where would you have told the world about 'The Good Old Days' in the Good Old Days? By writing to 'Tell it Tony'?
We should be grateful for progress in some respects.
