I never thought I'd read post after post on a FOOTBALL forum where the OP shamelessly updates the lumpen proletariat on his endless patronising one liners reminding us all ceaselssly where he is whilst we keep the means of production going and professing not to see how utterly crass it is.
I read a few minutes ago that North Korea has just launched another missile.
Is it too much to hope ...........

Cricket at Bramall Lane.


Sharp, Padgett, Wilson. V., Wilson. D. Illingworth, Close, Binks, Trueman, Aplleyard, Boycott came a little later.

I've named 9 who rolled off the tongue. Who were the openers? Sharp occasionally, Padgett too, but who else?

Sutcliffe for a while as captain ( gentleman skipper, couldn't play much)

Benches, cushions, Tizer bottles to collect 3d deposit, wags, pavilion, gentleman entrance separate from players, non electronic scoreboard, Sheffield United cricket team played their season at the Lane and I watched them from the pavilion balcony times many., Could wander round the whole pavilion. Remember Johnny Wardle ,, talk about charisma.

No technology ( DRS?!!) no food stalls,

Cricket indoor nets where the hotel car park is now. Easy to watch the greats practice.

Still remember Trueman charging in from the pavilion end. Still remember Truman batting, aiming to hit the pavilion clock, No. 7 bat, we all stayed to watch.

No aggro, no phones, no radios, no cash in the sport; like a different planet and so much better.

Didn't Hampshire play in that era for Yorkshire ? They were a fantastic team, saw them at Leeds and Bradford never at BDTBL

I really enjoy reading posts that relate to the subject of any thread. Too many can only react to posts by knocking and criticising and trying to ridicule.

As somebody said recently, a lot of threads degenerate towards the end and that is when the ones who have loads to say, and cartoons to copy, but rarely express opinions themselves. One or two can at least quote facts comfortably so at least that's something.

Sad people calling other people sad is really....Sad.

This thread is about The Good Old Days should anyone need reminding. I invite every poster who has joined the thread to remind themselves what they have offered about the old days - look in a mirror.

I think you may be waiting a while my old friend. Since reading what you have had to say about the trolling and attacks on people, can i just say that i am in full agreement with what you have to say. Far too often this board has had a culture where people play the poster and not the post, and what starts off as an excellent thread like you have started with this one when the sharks sniff blood in the water and start circling. I admire the way that you refuse to bow to the bully boy tactics and bravely continue contributing to this forum, and responding with respect and dignity whist the sharks lose all theirs.

How is your holiday, are you enjoying it?

Hampshire joined the team I first saw as a young lad, as did Sharp come to think of it.

Both heroes as with all the others. I was never Boycs fan though.

I would class myself as an intellectual like yourself, and also a man who is always prepared to stand up and be counted. That is why this poem comes to mind and I hope you can strength from it, and not be bullied by the acts of cowardice

260 posts on this thread, first daft one No.60, bit personal,no need for it.. Thread went along great then another poor post No.137, then 141,142,143 then everything ok until 214,220,224,225,227,240,241,242,244,256,258,260. ( ok think one is mine btw).

Hope you get the gist. The spoilers step in and invariably knock a thread off track.

And this is a really fluffy , warm topic, a trip down memory lane. Why can't posters who have nothing of value to add just keep out of it? There are so many threads on the forum, why can't they leave certain threads alone if they've nothing worthwhile to contribute?

If you've time, take a look at the above threads and maybe the posts around them which are continuing the thread subject.

Boycott divided opinion. A very stubborn and selfish cricketer apparently. His batting average was more important than team peformance. To be fair of all that team he seemed to make a career well past his playing days.

Bramall Lane though!

Once watched him score double hundred in a three day game - match drawn inevitably.At a young age I wondered what the point of the game was.Same throughout his career apart from a one day final. Good Test player though.

Cricket grass was for sale by he square yard and what grass it was, much like a bowling green in the outfield.

There was a big bump in the fast bowlers' run up from the football end right on the touchline and it often troubled the slips and keeper at that end.

What I remember most, though, was the fighting on the Shoreham End. As a little country cousin I had rarely seen anything like it. The game itself was a bit rough too. Wednesday included a dirty hound called Sammy Todd whose orders were obviously to kick the knees from under any United player who crossed his path.

For a short while about 4 or 5 years ago I worked with a woman called Julia Bolus, who was a nice person and good fun. It never occurred to me that she might have been related to Brian till one day I mentioned Boycott and she said "His name is banned in our house". Brian is her dad, and he didn't, still doesn't and never will have a high opinion of Sir Geoffrey.

He liked Brian Close and Ray Illingworth, though.

I expect you saw so much scrapping in those days that you probably didn't notice any more. It was an eye-opener for me though, not coming from Sheffield and being used to much smaller attendances and very few away fans.

Guys, Woody's right. He's gone on an "independent traveller's" holiday (sounds suspiciously like code for "Billy No-Mates" to me) and yet here you all are, forcing him to trek daily to the local Internet cafe and keep a tally of the content of all 260 posts on this thread when he could be out in the sunshine seeing the sights.
