It was a direct quote from new Celtic Assistant Manager John Collins that they should be going for more young Scottish players like Scougall. That would be a reasonable statement to make considering that he's just broken into the U21's having only been with us a few months.
Perhaps Celtic will start snapping up more of the local talent and being a rival to us for the Scottish players, but its also a compliment to Clough and what he has done in the few months since he arrived that we are now looking to reject bids from sides playing at a higher level unless they meet the value.
We can't escape the fact that if we develop talented players at the club and progress, then we will undoubtedly get offers to sell those players. If the players (and their agent) want to leave, then the club is in a corner. So the current approach of getting players into reasonable two year (with an optional one plus) contracts is sensible. It allows us to fix a fair asking price for the club.
One thing that Clough was clear about with Harry, we've rejected two bids from Wolves because they didn't meet our valuation. But he was clear that if an offer comes in "which allows us to strengthen in 2-3 positions, then we will consider it".
I think the statement is an extremely strong change in the mentality at the club which we've seen in the past 12 months. It started with KMac. We were able to go and get Baxter (one of the talents of the division before coming to the lane). This is something which hasn't happened for many years before.
I can accept losing the best talent, but as long as we replace them and build the team to progress.
Just look at Southampton, they now want GBP40 million for 18 year old Shaw. If they get it good luck to them, but if I was a Saints fan I'd want to know that they were replacing him with 2-3 players to develop.
At the moment the Scougall rumour is just that, no offer has been made.
