Murphy must have known a while ago that clubs higher up were sniffing after him and that he could have doubled his wages but was happy to sign a new contract with us and state how much he loved the club, yet a few weeks later he wanted away. He should have been told that he would have to see this season out with us. As for having a player not committed, well that would have made a mockery out of the statement he put out. These contract extensions that players sign are worth nothing, especially to a selling club like SUFC. To a certain extent I can live with these players departing if only we replaced them with some quality and within a short space of time, yet we always seem to take an eternity to eventually recruit Joe Average.

Perhaps contract extensions are offered/signed so clubs can get £1.75m if they have to sell and the player has an income if the clubs that his agent are mentioning don't come up with the deal?

You say he seemed happy, no one is saying he wasn't, but Brighton coming in changes his opinion because the opportunity is there to better yourself. There is no logical reason for the board to want to stay in this division unless they want to lose money, and £2m won't cover it.
In the Premiership I can see he logic because you can generate so much revenue simply by staying in the league. Not quite the same in league one.

It's the timing which is the real issue and had been for last few seasons. Knowing he is going I am sure he would have waitEd for us to spend some cash before letting him go. Every sale is just badly managed

The saddest part of all of this is that it's undeniable that Sheffield United is a shit place to play football if you want to progress.

If a slightly above average player like Murphy recognises that he cannot shine in this division with this club and he accepts that we are not a major contender for promotion (because, let's not beat about the bush, that's exactly what this move proves) that says everything you need to know about the state of this squad and the club at the moment

We ARE heading for a 6th season in this league. There is far too much to do to turn this miserable squad around - especially with the mill stone of the perpetually crocked and the injuries to key players who are MONTHS away from being able to have any affect on this campaign.

We spent a fair bit in the JTW which I assume was the Harry money so you'd hope it is repeated. There seems to be more being spent now than just before the Prince's involvement, when we couldn't, apparently, even attract a decent manager.

But we'll see. There have been rumours of Brighton's interest for a while now so we must have been thinking about options, lining players up, either as replacements or to strengthen other areas so you'd expect to see some incoming in the next week or so.

Can't believe the attitude of some United fans on this thread - the "how can we hope to keep a player if another club comes calling" attitude - in many ways very similar to the board and imo one of the reasons we're still in the third division.

If the club is serious about getting out of this division (and I would fully expect a club such as SUFC to punch it's weight and expect for example to be at least mid table Prem, appear in the occasional Cup final, compete in European competitions, etc), then the club, board and manager should be selling the dream to the good players already at the club and ditto with incoming players. At the very least if the club has to sell a player it should be over the odds and we should have a decent replacement lined up, using all the incoming transfer money if necessary (this didn't happen with Murphy, or Maguire, or Blackman, etc).

When they went up in 05/06 there was that drive from all concerned - in particular board and management - that nothing would stand in United's way. We weren't going to sell our best players, all the ones we wanted to keep had been signed up under contract and there was no messing about bringing new players into the Lane. That's the type of pugnacious attitude we require now (and I'd suggest that's why we need McCabe, Phipps and the Pearly Prince replaced by men, or women, with proper ambition and drive to move the club forward) NOT the 'how can we stand in the way of a player if Brigthon, (Hull or Reading come calling)' attitude.
