What's the odds of £1Mill + Add-Ons + Bjorn Helge Riise??
I can't believe people who'll be happy to see an England youth international striker go for a couple of millions. It won't even be enough to cover the expenses of Nick Montgomery and Richard Cresswell's remaining contracts with us.
Learning from your past mistakes anyone?
Its not that I would be happy to see Slew leave, quite the opposite actually. Its more a recognition of our current circumstances. We are a third tier team Fulham are playing in Europe next season. We are not in a position to do anything but sell our best/most promising players to bigger clubs. Even if we didnt need the money how could we keep the player if he expresses an interest to leave (in my opinion he would be insane not to want the move)?
But that doesnt happen at any club. Ultimately every club is a selling club, even Man Utd. If the player says they want to go the club can do very little other than try and maximise the value of the transfer and ensure they receive a full market price.
Can someone repeat the stuff thats been said on BM about what supposedly happened over the weekend?
Precisely the point I made Bergen.....I agree completely. £2M might sound like a nice wedge for a young striker but we'll get that £2M and spend it on the wages of a couple of crap players. I might be in the minority but I would much prefer to keep Slew and pay him a handsome salary knowing that we have a player with some potential. No brainer IMO.
Thats the point I've been making. You still finish up spending the dosh but history shows you will be buying dross instead of 'investing'.
If prem clubs think one of our players are worth a punt then this should be a better yard stick than using our own judgement based on the last six mamagers appointed.
Slew has done ok, but he's still to prove himself.
He lacks the extra pace to frighten and hasn't shown enough in the air to be considered a strong striker at any level. If he was THAT special he would be a first team regular already and not forcing his way in now. The cold, harsh relality of our situation says that if the price is right then we should be able to replace him with a more rounded and proven performer for less. The only certainty is that whoever replaces him will be paid more. There lies the gamble for me. Our situation dictates that a return to the Champ is more important to revenue than giving him a season of first team football that may not be as successful as a large section of our fans are deluded to think he'll be. Whilst I wouldn't want to see the money spent on a 30+ journey man I also don't think Slew has it in him to be our saviour. £2m fee would be maybe £1m up front. Say £500k to spend and further £500k that finances a salary of the signing for a year. Use his fee to pay a wage to unsettle someone elses startlet who could do the same job or better!?
Connor Wickham, he of £7m rating fame, played 41 games for Ipswich last season, scoring 9 goals (0.22 goals/game)
Jordan Slew, he of apparent £500k rating, played 8 games last season, scoring 2 goals (0.25 goals/game).
Slew is also 5 months younger than Wickham and would have played in an age bracket below. I'm not saying that Slew will be as good as Wickham (or, indeed, that Wickham will be as good as the media hype around him) but surely it would be better to try and convince him to stay?
Can Wickham be as good as Slew?
Don't get your logic. You're saying he's shown nothing yet think he should be worth £2M ? Which, 'rounded and proven performer' do you think we should be looking at that will cost us less money than retaining him ?
As an aside, how much did Messi and Villa show 'in the air' on Saturday ?
Why go out for a steak when you've got a perfectly decent beefburger at home?
Pretty sure I said £1m upfront and as a fee for a player with potential that is about fair. But Wilson's job is to maximise the squad potential and for me I don't see improvement coming in the areas required at a rate fast enough to help us. To bounce straight back we need a strike partnership of 60 goals and I don't see Slew playing 50 games and scoring 30 times. I firmly believe that he scored those goals because he was under no pressure to perform and had confidence to actually strike on goal. I don't see him giving the return a more seasoned player might bring next season and I won't be pinning my hopes on him should he stay. He shouldn't be one of our main 2 strikers for me until the season after and will he stay and grow but be 2nd fiddle?
