gone by the first match.. i'll wager five quid on it as a sportsmans bet

some of you guys don't get this.. the academy isn't for the benefit of our football club.. it is a money making racket whose product is legitimised by the senior club.. they are brought on 'just' to be sold.. a bit like a horse racing stud

Dear Kevin McCabe,

Unless a team comes with a ridiculous offer for one of our youngsters, and by "ridiculous" I am talking "more than ten million" then tell them to fuck off.

You are allowed to turn down offers for players you know. You don't have to take the first wanky offer that comes along, or even the second or third.

So tell them in no uncertain terms to fuck off. You might find it strangely liberating.

Lots of love, SV.

P.S. You can be nice and polite if you like, but a strong, firm "fuck off" does the trick every time. Except for some reason with members of the local constabulary, but that's a story for another day.

Again what if Slew wants to go, do we tell him to see out his contract?

If we were to do that, and he then left at the end of his current contract, we would at least be due compensation for him.

To be honest though I have no idea how much we'd be likely to get for him at tribunal. Anyone know of any settlements for similar players? I think in general it's a relatively small fee up front with the rest coming from clauses for appearances, international caps, goals etc..

Why are people talking about millions? When Slew goes it will be for £500,000 not a penny more.

With him being so young it's shouldn't be an issue, we'll still get something once his contract expires maybe not a lot, but still something, Slew stands to lose more than we do, if he stays but doesn't want to play and his preformances drop he'll get dropped then his stock will also drop. We should be in the driving seat in this situation!

Isn't that what he's done (well perhaps not using those exact words)? I thought the bid had been rejected.

I really don't understand this 'what if the player wants to go' bit either.
An unhappy player does not make for a good player. You can say you're going nowhere but you're unlikely to get the best out of him if he wants to be elsewhere. Imagine you finding a job doing something that you love and being paid three four times as much as you;re getting now. And then imagine being told that you can;t take the job and you're stuck where you are until I say so. Not likely to motivate you is it?

Compare the Michael Brown of 2003 with the same player of the very next season.

Pandering to their needs sounds more appropriate. Like a having a child that won't stop crying till it gets its own way.

Best off giving them a clip around the ear and they'll soon fall in line :)

If clubs could only start exercising the uses of a contract...

The buying club must surely still make a bid which make the selling club think "we're better off with that cash than keeping the player". When Warnock enquired about Alex Baptiste at Mansfield a few years ago they said they wanted £750,000, and that's where the interest ended. The player stayed there, kept impressing, until Blackpool put a bid in that Mansfield found acceptable. By McCabe's logic we should have bid £100,000, waited for the player to start moaning and playing rubbish, then signed him for that sum.

i'm not sure Slew has signed a pro contract, infact I'm fairly sure he's still on his junior/apprentice one. £100 a week or prem contract now that is a tough call!

UTB

Might as well keep him if they're only offering a £1m. It's hardly like that is going to be a quick-fix solution to our financial worries anyway. Keeping him could bag us promotion - worth a lot more than that amount!

As Bob said earlier, it all depends whether he wants to stay (and what kind of contract he's on now). If he does, no brainer, a good season with us and we'd be offered more than is on the table now anyway.

Fuck whether he wants to stay! He wanted to stay in November!

Like I said up thread if he stays and doesn't want to and it effects his performances he stands to lose out just as much as the club will do, if not more. We hold more cards here, well we do if the contract is all right as you stated.

6 months is a long time in football, especially when you've tasted a bit of 'success' in the meantime.

BM are convinced he wants out due to some alledged discussions/shenanigans over the weekend.

He re-signed an approved deal last year although that only has a year left to run by all accounts.

Premier League club take a punt on a 3rd division club's promising player. Realistically there is no way we can keep hold of the player.

Agreed SE10, but they should be told to match our valuation or Foxtrot Oscar.

Tell them we want £3 Million upfront plus sell on, if they don't agree then they obviously don't rate you that highly Jordan sorry mate. I'm sure Rankine can get you another deal in the summer, now get your head down.

Same goes for Maguire if he is having similar thoughts.

3 million quid is a lot of money for a player with a couple of senior level goals to his name. Where have comparable players traded? Stoke paid 3 million for Walters a proven Championship striker so a valuation for Slew at the same levels seems a tad rich?

Tottenham paid £3 Million for Walker, who had played a similar amount of games, and forwards should go for more than right backs.

Edit: I believed he had 3 years left on his deal, if not and he only has 12 months then the price will be seriously effected. In fact for a year I'd be tempted to make him see out his contract and let him bust a gut for us. We'd get some money because of his age even though he is out of contract it would be set by tribunal.

Far more really, good pacey forwards with potential aren't easy to come by. Walcott commanded a fee of £5 million up front with clauses to take it to £12 million. Granted he had played 22 games but he had only managed to score 4 times in those 22, Slew's record is already much better.

Slew, ain't no Walcott and Theo was a winger for Southampton.

Incidentally as I discussed with Odders/Guss on BM Walcott didn't cost £12 Million. Southampton settled for a lot lower than that because they were skinty-poo.

I'm not saying Slew is as good as Walcott or ever will be but he's the one kind of transfer close to the case I can think of to compare with in similar sort of roles.

I didn't say he cost them £12 million Bob, however I thought it rose to £12 million with certain add ons, appearences, goals and assists plus appearences for England.

It seems pretty simple to me.

Ask Jordan Slew, given the interest from Fulham, does he want to stay at Bramall Lane? If his answer is ‘no’ go to (a) if answer is ‘yes’ go to (b)

(a) Put a £1m upfront + clauses valuation on his head and tell Fulham he wont be going for a penny less.

(b) Put a £3m upfront + clauses valuation on his head and tell Fulham he wont be going for a penny less.

There is always the option of offering him a new deal at BDTBL to sway his decision. Whilst we dont have the cash that Fulham do, we can give him first team football.

I would let Slew go for a couple of million. I think we should at least hold out for 2 million. It would be good to get him back on loan if he does go and I fully expect him to go. Now a bigger club has come sniffing Slew will get excited and want out. Lets hope we get a good deal even though we all know we will let him go for 1 million and bring in an old veteran on more money than we offered Slew.
