1993 shout box: “Hoyland and Hartfield in the middle is way too negative for this. And Bryson up front? He’s a winger not a striker. Littlejohn not even on the bench? Must have fallen out with Bassett. Typical Bassett – bottled it for this one.”

Franz Carr was one of my favourite players at the time. If I remember rightly, we loaned him initially and then signed him permanently from Newcastle, with him being a regular member of the team. What happened to him after that though, eg in 93/94, as I can barely recall him playing again – injuries? He had a superb game in this one – excellent finish for the 1st and a general menace throughout with his jinking runs.

Enjoyed that...great idea to upload!

....but I have to say that even though we won I cant remember the standard being so dire. Spurs were shocking but we were not exactly sensational. Most of the goals aside from Carr's screamer and a well worked last one came from defensive errors.

I am not sure either team put more than two passes together. The pitches are inferior of course but to see players just hoofing it out or kicking it up in the air was a regular occurrence in that game.

Saw Gage doing a Bassett v Wilder comparison in terms of which side would win but the current team would anihlate the Bassett lot. Take out Hodges, Deane and the rest (maybe Franz Carr) seem even more limited than I can remember and that's in a 6-0 win!

Do I just remember the standard being much better in my head and were all games like this?

The standard of football wasn't great but then again neither were the standard of pitches they had to play on. Bassetts teams were never easy on the eye but they made up for it with their endless work rate and commitment. Game reminded me its one of the few I missed so good to see it after all these years.

Great shirt, crap coloured shorts and why oh why didn't DB play Rogers in the semi final against the Pigs.

There were one or two Spurs players who were under suspension and I have always thought they re-arranged the match to be played at a short notice in a midweek so that they would have a full squad available for the FA Cup 6th round at Man City (Spurs won 4-1)

Brian Deane looks sensational, way better than anyone else on the pitch. Now if he was in today's team we really could be challenging for some silverware!

As for Spurs defence, I cannot remember seeing such a poor outfit, utterly dreadful, & Jason Cundy, played Deano a lovely cushioned ball for his goal!

I enjoyed that.

Keep safe
