Gained five points on Scunny and closed it down to one point, and a six point gap between third and fourth.

From it looking at one point any two from the top four, it's now beginning to look like two from the top three.

But If current form is anything to go by us and Bolton will both overtake Scunny quite soon.

Then with a bit of luck it might be a two horse race for top spot, with both pushing each other on to maintain a gap over third.

But I know before you say it, one game at a time ;)

Starting to get a bit giddy
Grind the points out of games like this we're going the right way
Few players in the window,jackpot.

Interesting having a scoot around some of our top 6 rivals forums to see what the mood is amongst support. Looks like Southend and Rochdale are buoyant, Bolton are grinding out results and Bradford are struggling tactically. Scunny's forum is like the Marie Celeste. Anyway more grounds for optimism. This is a one off, but selected highlights copied and pasted below:-

Bolton

Anyway, it was pretty shite, but we won. Playing badly and winning always works for me.

It never seems easy - I'd hate to be Crazy Horse's underwear.

Scunny held 0-0 at Bradford. According to my maths that means two points between the top three?

True, but it's in our hands. Winning on Thursday would take us back into the auto zone - and could also knock Scunny out of it for the first time in a long while, which would be an interesting test of their psychological strength.

First half we should have had 4/5, don't know what the fuck Parkinson says at HT, but time and again we come out asleep for second half, happened too many times for it to be anything other than his team talks, he's so fucking negative, we were so so lucky to hang on at the end, Scunny will dick us if we're not on our game for 90 MINS.

Shit performance. Everyone underperformed. But it's the result that counts.

Left after 80 minutes so didn't see the Shrewsbury goal, but there's no doubt they deserved it and probably more.

Derek needs to be in the starting 11 against Scunthorpe.

Scunthorpe

(Nowt on there)

Bradford

Hanson was utter site today.put you bloody hands down, jump in time of the ball and lead the line.

The timing of his jumping is pitiful. I'm tired of seeing a centre back a foot above him because he's already on his way back down.

Average attendance at home last season was 18,061. To date our average home attendance this season is 18,073! :D
0.06644 % increase.

Very predictable today.
We were good is possession and our build up play was great today. The problem is, we are constantly throwing balls into the box from out wide, their defenders had a pretty easy game in the end.
Hanson played okay today but I do think we the team would benefit from him being sat on the bench.

Reasonably strong throughout. More positive than negatives. Scunthorpe probably had a bit of an off day as they didn't look top of the league at all, some of their play acting was comical, such as being pushed in the back and going down and holding your face.

Regardless of Scunthorpe on the day, it was a very confident performance from us; a lot of teams might quiver at their league position.

But f**k me we are so predictable going forward its not even one dimensional - it's automatic to get on the wings and look for Hanson. We tried pretty much nothing else.

Thought that was a good performance to be honest. Liked the way to formation worked and we almost completely nullified them apart from one mistake they should have scored from.

I see that Hanson is taking stick already (shock) but I genuinely thought he did okay within the role he played today. Not enough of a goal threat as we know but his contribution to the build up showed that he didn't always need to be flicking it backwards.

Southend

Simples..... If we carry on as we are, we'll get promoted

Another season in the Championship at Roots Hall isn't good though, we're so restricted. PB is doing his job as you've asked, RM, get the new stadium sorted. We won't survive without a new ground.

Fantastic first half from the team but I have to single out Fortune today. What a performance! 35 years old, ran the whole game and was still annoyed at being subbed off at the end. Showed some great touches and hold up play aswell. My clear MOTM.

Another good performance and 3 points, let's keep it going!

I totally agree and I do believe we have enough quality to get promoted this season. I look at our promotion season under Tilly and the first 15 are far better than those glory days. I would expect those sort of crowds along with good facilities, people want comfort now days.

A 3-0 win is a 3-0 win. 11 games unbeaten (after our start) is nothing short of amazing.
New stadiums, new signings, new facilities? For another day.
Celebrate the here and now. Bloody brilliant job Shrimpers!

Rochdale

That was a strange game as I didn't think we played as well as we have done in recent games, but we had enough genuinely good chances to finish about 6-0.

A special mention for Joey Rafferty. I remember a few years ago Morike Sako missing a chance in similar circumstances, but Joe's miss today rivals that for the worst miss I've ever seen. A yard out, no goalkeeper or defenders, nobody harrying him. Unbelievable Jeff! Aside from that he was excellent. Calvin Andrew was my man of the match though, his wingplay is excellent and some of his tackles are unreal!

Actually, my real man of the match was Russ Green, or whoever else was responsible for the crowd-increasing initiative that clearly worked today.

Where once Scunthorpe were being hailed as runaway leaders, the gap is now one point. Hindsight's a lovely thing, but so is patience. Weathering storms is part and parcel of any successful team's campaign, I even noticed comments suggesting that Fleck and Coutts needed resting, rather than appreciate that players who've played consistently well sometimes have 'off' days. It happens to most players, but according to some posters it shouldn't happen at t'Lane! How quickly their support turns after only one less than impressive performance. We had almost 26,000 at today's game, of which over 25,000 were Blades, so by anyone's standards that's mightily impressive. The run in for the remainder of the season will have most of us agitated before each game, and then, as (major assumption from myself) via a combination of superior play, grinded results, or having to draw on other qualities than the preferred team play we've become used to under Wilder, we gather the points that will drive us forward and take us closer and closer towards promotion. Am I being presumptuous in my prescription, or am I simply voicing what every dyed-in-the-wool Blade hungers for?

The latter. Great post. UTB

Southend sound cocky to me........

Mate, this is our year. Finally.

Gained five points on Scunny and closed it down to one point, and a six point gap between third and fourth.

But I know before you say it, one game at a time ;)

Really surprised at how Bradford City are falling away. From chatting with my City supporting mate, they desperately need a goalscorer, Hanson isn't really what they need as they change their style of play when he plays and McNults isn't doing it. He keeps telling me how he wishes we'd recall him!

If Scunny lose some players in Jan then i can see it being Us and Bolton, based on current form. With Bolton taking Scunny on next.

We could start the new year in a very strong position.

Good post, and no I ain't too proud to say so given our history of interesting encounters.

There have been common themes most of the season.

Bradford fans reckon they dominate most matches and would have a realistic chance of top 2.
Their problem is they struggle to score and too many draws. The JTW will be key for them if they sort out the strikers then they could still go on a good run of wins

Bolton fans have been generally underwhelmed by their side this season
However they seem to have a great defence and a knack of grinding out results
Many opposition fans often say they weren't impressed with Bolton and can't believe they are so high in the table. The other school of thought is that Bolton haven't started firing yet are still on a great run so what's going to happen when they start playing well.

Scunthorpe fan were saying how impressive they've been for most of the season and opposition fans rated them highly too however in recent matches they've looked very ordinary with some are worried they might be on a downturn of form

Bolton have got enough quality and a good defence. The key is if they can hang onto Clough over the JTW.

I don't think we need much to get into pole position, but ideally I'd take a winger with pace to replace Chapman and another centre midfielder. Plus possibly a striker on loan.

I think Bolton are a bit like us when we first came down with smattering of players probably too good for this division.

I hope their season ends the way ours did.

And if Billy gets injured or suspended? Serious point as - again - our over-reliance on Sharp is frightening. 16 League goals, next is Duffy with 5.
I don't think its a huge worry as there are goals throughout the team. We just have a very good goal scorer in Billy.

For me, Clarke steps in for Billy if he gets a knock. He's not a 25 goal man, but he'll get a bunch of goals and at least we would be scoring penalties if we lost Billy.

Looking at Southend's squad they've got some quality players.

Anton Ferdinand is a good player at this level at centre half and still only 31. Wordsworth is a quality centre mid who has played loads of games in the Championship. They've got plenty of firepower up front; Simon Cox is a quality striker at this level along with Marc-Antoine Fortune who is vastly experienced. Nile Ranger is a wildcard who can play when his mind is on it.
