You have to feel sorry for the guy. Club is an utter shambles. Even worse than the last owners.

Literally said the same thing in shoutbox. Well and truly shafted up the arse with no lube. No incomings for the weekend. Absolutely crazy. Genuinely have no idea what their plan actually is.

I don’t think anyone is truly shocked nobody will be in before Swansea, although I believe he said something like nobody is at the just medical stage so from that I deduce there are deals down the line. The worry is the process part he mentions seeing as it’s the owners who have created the process

Only an observation, but I think there is summat up. The bond between manager and players seems tense and there seems to be little humour and too much intensity.
Although I agree that it seems he has not been supported, he should still be getting performances out of a decent squad that is left. Let’s hope the next few days sees no movement out, a centre half brought in and more trusting relationships that then build over time.

Brilliant performance Saturday v Bristol City btw

I can't argue with that. I think people at the club are not doing their job in bringing players in.

For people who say he is a puppet of the owners he pretty much is calling them out two matches into the season.

I expect Wilder would be doing the same.

2 games in and the manager is having to make excuses for silent owners that seem oblivious to the need for 5 experienced championship standard players to come in urgently - managers words not mine.

I was on board with the concept of change perpetuated by the new incumbents. Apart from the No 1 position of Manager there is little evidence that change has happened or is even being considered. The cumbersome off field structure responsible for years of dawdling when it comes to the transfer window hasnt been touched in the slightest. Plate spinner Bettis remains as a one man band with his side kick Schieber he of the failed fax machine saga.

Rumours of owners disagreeing over whether to bring in young talent or experienced pros abounds. Additionally there are suggestions there was a split over whether to dispense with CW's services. There is no visible urgency to address the problems staring them in the face not least the manager they brought in is not being supported and is already making noises about a lack of support.

The gang of 7 supposedly running the club, Bettis apart, are a complete mystery to the supporters and the wider football world. Little in the way of planning and direction has surfaced. Unfortunately consortiums are notorious for delay as the bog standard text book illustrates;

Consortiums, while offering benefits like shared resources and risk mitigation, can face challenges in areas like co-ordination decision making resource allocation and alignment of interests. These issues can lead to delays, conflicts, and even project failure if not addressed proactively

From the outside looking in COH appear to have achieved all of these draw backs in record time.

When your manager is calling you out in public you have to be seen to be taking action. There is a duty on Eltouky and Rosen as co chairman to respond. Unfortunately it seems they are lost in a mire of indecision leading to the conclusion that is rapidly gaining traction that they do not possess the skills or team to successfully run an EPL club.

Really feel for him at the minute.
He came here thinking it was going to be a new scenario, having a chance to implement his ideas with a squad fit for promotion, instead of wading through shit like he did at Soton, Reading and Hull.
Looks like he's joined another shit show.
Behind the scenes we're a mess.

When he came out with the "frees and loans, but there is some money if needed later" it set the alarm bells for me. It's more through experience as a fan of this club.
You hope you're been cynical (bedwetter?) and they're smart not announcing what they have to spend, and they have some quality signings lined up.
The clock is ticking down to 02nd September to be hopefully proved wrong.

Expect him to become more vocal as the time goes on and no incoming players.

Laugh all you want at Disney FC we've ended up with Plan 9 From Outer Space.

You realise your in the mire when the best centre half is Jack Robinson and he did all he could to get a red last night so he wouldn’t have to play Saturday 😩😩

Putting the thumbs up to the Ref as if to say yes you are right I`m doing it whilst at the same time mouthing "knobhead" repeatedly was not a good sign for a Captain. Or for Sky's Broadcast Director as it was on for a good 5 seconds or so. :)

I thought the press conference today was really interesting and a potentially fascinating couple of weeks is about to unfold. I do not think that the club will sack Selles, but I do think Selles has the potential to walk, and a lot sooner than people think. I have been shot down a couple of times for saying this, but the small signs are there for me at the moment, although small signs they may be.

I thought the press conference today was really good, it showed Selles at his most raw, he seemed genuinely annoyed at the situation, talked more openly and sharply about the situation and let on more than usual:

  • Younger players do not have any experience around them to help them grow.
  • They knew they needed players before Vin and Moore left, that made it worse.
  • He seemed angry that no players will be coming in now before the weekend.
  • He gave hints at frustration with players attitudes.
For me, he let on more than ever that he has a job to do and, currently is unable to do it. I really hope this gives him a bit more aggression to make some demands of the board, who I genuinely believe would prefer to dilly and dally. If Selles is letting his frustration show now, it will only get stronger the more time passes and stuff does not get sorted.

I saw a different side to him today, this is a crucial time of growth for him. I personally do not see him as a Manager, I think he is a coach, probably a very good one, but I do not see him as a Manager. His previous interviews sound like he is giving a lecture to a bunch of UEFA B candidates, he talks in coaches language about transitions and passages of play and understanding roles, but he does not strike me as a manager of players. Coaches live in an ideal world and try to work towards getting to that ideal into a team as a much as possible, Managers live in the real world and have to drag idealism into reality, two very different angles.

But right now, the club are making him look like a ‘bit of a twat’. Previously he managed at clubs that would have been grateful for the effort, clubs in trouble and in crisis, no money, embargos etc etc etc. But this is his big break, a chance to become a proper manager and the club are killing him. We have quickly gone from ‘embracing technology’ and ‘being great at integrating young players’ on his recruitment announcement, to ‘young players won’t develop without experience around them’, ‘Championship football is in the top 10 leagues in the world’ and ‘We actually need Championship quality players to come in and we are too slow to get them’ and this marks the shift I have seen.

Selles has come into a club that didn’t really need him, at least half the fans didn’t really see why he was needed (even if they thought a change was needed), that was doing pretty well without him and he was only going to get grief in every moment it looked like we would not be getting 92 points or more this season. But, if anything can be said about him, he isn’t stupid and he would have known this when accepting the job, it would be ludicrous if he thought any different.

I would love to see him change now and now is the perfect moment. If he can turn that frustration into demand and that demand into action, then he can grow, the club can grow and we can get back on track. He has a make or break opportunity to become a ‘proper manager’. If he makes it clear that the current status is unacceptable, that he cannot do a job with what he has been given and if it carries on there is every chance he would move on, then what choice do the club have? In response to the initial thread title, who in their right mind would come to manage a club that spouted AI as being an exciting key to lots of things, that is behind the curve on other clubs in recruitment right now and that would seemingly put profit before the club (my personal opinion on what is happening here, rightly or wrongly).

I seriously hope that we have started to see a new side to Selles, we need that right now !!

I have been a Blades supporter for 60 odd years and known some really deressing times as a United supporter. Those of us who have seen it all before will be recognising the red flags. I am worried by how quickly things have deteriorated in the close season and can see us entering a prolonged period of stagnation at best or aqperiod of decline. There is a lot to be very worried about right now:

  1. Most alarming is the lack of urgency and action from the club to strengthen a squad badly weakened since the play off final.
  2. The complete shambles of a recruitment policy and process
  3. Something is not right among the players. There does not seem to be an understanding of what we are trying to do. Players don't seem to be at it or together
  4. Clubs like Hull, (who are under an embargo for Christ's sake) have been to recruit far better than we have
  5. Lack of communication and clarity from the owners
  6. Allowing key players to leave before replacements have been brought in or even lined up
  7. Lack of progress or information about what is happening with the new training ground
  8. Are we beginning to see the real reasons why Wilder was sacked? I thhink he would have had plenty to say if he had been left in the situation that Selles is in. By the way, I undestand the criticisms of Wilder but at the moment I would take a couple of boring 1 -0 Wilder wins.
  9. I know we played some good stuff against Bristol City but the manner of the defeat and the capitulation at the beginning of the secpnd half was truly awful
  10. Last night's performance was staggeringly bad. I know it's only the Tin Pot cup but after Saturday we needed to see that some lessons had been learned and a better reaction
  11. What happens if someone comes in for Hamer? I think we all know. Why would someone like Hamer, Cooper or Campbell want to stay?
  12. People are saying we will end up in mid table. I think that unless things happen quickly it could be much worse.
  13. Selles sounds frustrated and pissed off already doesn't he?

I could go on. COH have shown thenselves to be very poor owners so far anf they need to step up. I really hope that in a couple of weeks we will have seen better performances, a couple of results and at least 4 decent signings to fill the obvious gaps. If not we are in deep, deep shit. Not as much shit as Wednesday perhaps but I don't find any satisfaction in that. And, by the way, their threadbare squad have put in a couple of performances and shown some fight and unity in adversity.

I will probably be slated by some on here for being a doom monger, bedwetter and being overly negative and that we need to be be patient and wait. Wait for what? Relegation back to League One? I really hope I am being overly pessimistic but I have seen much of this shit before from SUFC boards and owners and I do not like the signs one little bit.

Just one more little observation and side note? What about the treatment of Caceres? So we bring a young kid over from Peru. He makes a commitment to a massive move and upheaval for him. Next news we are talking about shipping the lad off to Dunfermine. I know he is well payed and priviliged to be able to play football for a living but he is also human. I am not comfortable with the ethics of this at all never mind what it tells us about how shambolic the recuitment policy has been.

Anway on to Saturday and Swansea. I am desperately hoping for a decent performance and results followed by some movement into the club to make me feel better. UTB

I don't know why but putting bit of a twat in speech marks made me chuckle.

As for Selles being a coach, maybe you're probably right but that wouldn't be a problem at a modern club with a defined DoF role. Selles is trying, or being asked to do what Wilder did i.e. everything but without the right support around him.

Being called bedwetters for saying the exact same, but you all aren't saying a single thing now!!
Its exactly what we have been saying for the past month. Its been clear and obvious that something is amiss, especially with the lack of permanent signings.
Clearly Wilder spent a LOT of money in January on the loan fees on the promise of being promoted, and as that hasn't materialised, now its coming back to bite us on the arse!
Look at QPR able to spend 5 mill on a striker, along with loads of free agents that would have helped...

I too have seen it all since 1959. First game 1961. I am absolutely with you on everything you say. We have both got the T shirt and we recognise the signs. How not to run a club and man manage.

I did in fact quote something that had never been quoted, although I was quoting myself technically. If COH can use smoke and mirrors, so can I.

I agree, whatever you thought of Wilder, he didn't take any crap without at least throwing the toys out of the pram. And we all knew it.

Yes I see you have been very sympathetic of him giving him a rating of 0/10 for the first 2 matches….
That's rating a performance. What has it got to do with whether I rate him as a manager or not?

You have to feel sorry for the guy. Club is an utter shambles. Even worse than the last owners.

Well, thats quite a turn around for, lets say, the only spokesperson from the club fronting up to media to turn around at this stage in the transfer window and say that we've not been good enough in the recruitment this summer and effectively answer the question on whether the players he has are good enough to play the way he wants by saying he'll have to adapt is a huge statement 2 months into his tenure and less than a week into the season.

Lets remind ourselves what the owners said back on 18th June in their official statement:

Looking ahead, we are delighted that Rubén Sellés will take over as first team manager.

Rubén is a culture setter and represents a new direction. His work to date in England and in Europe has marked him as one of the more promising and progressive coaching talents. He demands intensity in execution and an attacking style of play - qualities we believe are essential for our club's long-term ambitions.

Rubén understands the power of potential and how to unlock it. How to grow players who can grow with the team. His ability to integrate academy talent, employ innovative recruitment and analytic strategies, play an exciting brand of football, and adapt dynamically to the modern game, are all tenets we believe that the next great chapter of Sheffield United football will be built upon.

As owners, please know that we remain unwavering in our goal: to see Sheffield United not only return to the Premier League, but to establish ourselves as a club that can compete consistently at a high level.

This decision has not been made lightly. We are setting a new course - one built for the future, rooted in our identity, and aimed squarely at bringing sustainable success to your city.

To our supporters: thank you for your unwavering loyalty and belief. You are absolutely vital to our ability to succeed and we know you will given Rubén full backing.

The road ahead may require patience, but also promises excitement, growth, and a footballing identity that reflects both our history and our ambition.

Once again the final point highlighted regarding patience should be kept at the front of our minds, as you've also posted about recrently robbiez666 but there is a contradiction in what we're seeing in terms of action and what they said about the goal.

So far and as it appears, for the second league game we will not have the new faces we desperately need for saturday, the owners don't look to be committed to Selles to help him meet their goals.

Who/what even is our recruitment process?

As far as I can tell, it's Stephen Bettis trying to do everything.

No wonder it's wank.

And that's no slight on Bettis per se. He is one man trying to manage complex multi million pound international deals involving 3 parties, on his own, with money that isn't his and with parameters he has little control over.

How does that compare with any of our peers? Let alone clubs we're trying to emulate?

Well said, I think you have articulated what many of us are thinking. Its a disgrace whats happening. I seriously think they have hired Chancer in as a consultant on how to ruin the club.
