Coal mining was in terminal decline in the UK long before Thatcher was PM. For instance peak coal usage on the railway was just after the end of WW2; steam traction was eliminated by British Railways by August 1968. Harold Wilson closed more pits than Thatcher did. Marxist criminals such as Scargill believed the taxpayer should keep paying whatever it took to keep his grift going.
Coal mining "decline" verses, Thatchers imports....

So much misinformation surround this subject. Just spend 5 mins looking at the import amounts and tell me we couldn't have produced that for less without Thatchers petty war on the working class.

Edit: Marxist criminals....? Please explain WTF Marxism has to do with taxpayers paying billions to import overpriced Russian coal? Also, Scargill wasn't even close to being a Marxist, Communist or Trotskyist, He was barely a socialist. A great public speaker, but out of his depth around a negotiating table.

Now 40 years on ,labour opposed the opening of a new mine in the north east ,specialised steel making coal that has to be imported .how times change .

Alot of my friends have now had a longer and more prosperous life than if they had been at the coal face .(death trap )

Oh right, the same coal that is now not necessary since technical innovation using electric foundries, making steel production fossil fuel free?
But shit, the Daily Mail said it's Labour who shut the mines....
Certain steel making procedures need that type of coal ,now then matey your talking to a ex furnace bricklayer so I'm not wet behind the ears. And I'm not trying to get political

The Notts miners were perfectly entitled to cross the picket line because the line had no business trying to stop them working.

It would be like if I was on strike so went and stood outside the nearest Asda and started threatening their workers and families - it's fucking idiotic like the chant.

A lot of fucking idiots in here talking bollocks, They didn’t just shut a pit they destroyed communities and the fucking SCABS in Nottinghamshire thought Thatcher would look after them . You had to be there to understand what they did . They are fucking Traitors to the working class. I was on strike for 12 fucking months and I’d do again in a Heartbeat.

Notwithstanding the (recent) historical origin of the use of term and how emotions and memories understandably run extremely deep in many South Yorks & North Derbys communities, even if you didn’t agree why on earth would you be wringing your hands about a derogatory chant targeting a fanbase who are, by and large, absolutely incorrigible arseholes?

I lived in a close knit mining village 99%were solid ,all close mates ,it disintegrated in the last week's of the strike but they held there heads up high .but ultimately led up the garden path ,used and abused for petty political gains .

Best to leave all what happened to history ,people that lived in mining village's know what the state did ,and the resentment lives on even in people not involved in the mines ,but fast forward nearly 40 years .and people have moved on and for the lads and friends of mine they will probably live 15 years longer . It was bitter at the time but life moves on .

Oh I just hate forest for the blindsiding of Billy .

Many of the pits were unsustainable but the way the government acted was not acceptable, they went above and beyond to ruin a once great industry out of spite.
I am a former miner and I am sure those former miners who have commented would join me when I say - I would work underground tomorrow if the opportunity arose and I was 20 years younger. The mining industry in the UK is slowly on the up but skills have been lost and are hard to learn.
But back to topic - a bunch of blindsiding scabby bastards. UTB

I always find it amusing when any vaguely left wing or trade union figure appears in the public conscious the instinct is to label them as being at the most extreme end of the spectrum as possible (I.e. Mick Lynch being called a communist).

Contrast this with Thatcher following the extreme hard right Chicago school doctrine of the likes of Rand and Friendman. Shut the pits in a short sharp shock and fuck the communities who relied on them - communities don’t really exist anyway despite all the evidence to the contrary. They can always move to London and get jobs in Canary Wharf if they want a decent life for their families.
