Why isn’t the penalty also a red card? No attempt to play the ball and denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. He didn’t even book him

i think it's a double jeopardy thing, they can book them (which the ref didn't with O'Nien) but a pen is deemed enough punishment for the crime. Although with Moore on pens like that, a red would be better than a pen.

I think double jeopardy is only in play if the opposing player makes a genuine attempt to play the ball (or is deemed to have made an attempt to play the ball).

This probably boils down if the referee thought it was a clear goal scoring opportunity, which you'd like to think it was.

If he's not sending him off for it (which he should be), then he needs to be at the very least booking him.

Yeah i don't know why it wasn't a booking. It was a soft pen (considering O'Hare didn't get one for the shoulder charge v WBA), but the rules are clear... so it was a pen.

Sky mentioned he wasn't booked and left it at that...

MOM so far the referee
Kept the game flowing well! Watched the pen from above and mackems had 5 players encroaching into the box too easy to get away with this.shocking pen though he can't be given another surely. We have to build attacks quicker! Played into there hands and were picking us off after it broke down.Lack of pace and movement up front just plays into the oppositions hands and that is not just last night.

Got most things right but bottled giving us another pen for the blatant shirt pull on Anel late on. Like Wilder said post match he was never going to give it in the last few minutes in front of 42,000.
What I don't get with that late shirt pulling, is that the ref had continually pulled players up before corners/free kicks to warn them, so presumably was aware of it and looking for it, but then didn't do owt about it when it actually happened?!

One of the best refs I've seen this season. But shouldn't the penalty have been a yellow card?

100% Should have been a Red for the Pen. Clear Goalscoring chance and no attempt to play the ball. Can't belive Wilder hasn't mentioned this in his interviews and also on the pitch I would hope a senior player knows the rules and would have been telling the ref also.

The easy option on corners is to give the freekick to the defending team because the ref knows that both sides will be pushing and pulling and not giving a pen is no great controversy.

The whole situation at corners with grappling and wrestling would stop if refs started giving the freekicks to the attacking team or didn't give anything when the ball gets bundled into the net week in week out. Defenders would immediately keep their hands to themselves. And lets be fair, attacking players have less need to grapple as they should only have their eyes on getting to the ball and they can also block without the shirt grabbing

This happens repeatedly in all games. It's often 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other but if it's clear cut I don't understand why players are never punished when it happens prior to a kick being taken. Is there a rule that doesn't allow cautions if the ball isn't in play?

Goalkeepers holding the ball for more than 6 seconds is another offence which is never punished. Just looked at the rules;-

'In association football, the rule for goalkeepers holding the ball is that they must release the ball within six seconds of gaining control of it. If a goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than this, the referee will award an indirect free kick to the opposing team.'

If it was announced one weekend this rule would be enforced throughout football, it could be stopped immediately.
