promotion next season

no chance, losing to them twice and promotion, yes
I take it the alternative is beating them home and away and going down?
Let's be fair, nothing would taint a steel city double more than ending back up in the abyss that is league 1 but I couldn't ever pick any outcome that involves us losing home and away to those bastards.
What does 2 draws get us?

I haven't felt this optimistic in a long time

It's not that I think we'll piss the league or owt, just that I believe that in our first season back, with momentum a little luck and our usual CW hard graft instilled in the squad, we are going to surprise a few teams next season. No doubt we will come unstuck from time to time, as after all, there some good sides in that division, but I have high hopes that we'll compete

I hope the pigs are their usual arrogant selves when we play em, cos they are one of the teams who will get the biggest surprise

So yeah. Can we do it? Logic/reality tells me that the official line is mid table obscurity next season, enough points to keep us safe and consolidate, however. Heart says Chris wilder will be trying, the boys will be trying, he'll be getting them pumped for it and will tell them they can do it.

Thoughts.

I think we have an outside chance of it. I think we are a top 8 or 10 side at the moment.

It all depends on whether we can stay in touch with the top 6 then strengthen in Jan.

Barring one disastrous season, Sheff United have been (in our last spell there over several years) a promotion challenging side. There's no reason why we can't be the same again.

Despite what the feathered ones may say, there aren't many "quality" teams in this division - there's a few...Villa, Derby, Norwich, Boro, Cardiff (I think they'll do well), Brum, possibly Sunderland (money from the Prem).

But outside of that it's ordinary.

We are, for a change, not expected to be amongst the favourites. But what we've got down there is a bit special and will surprise a few people.

we won't get promoted, but we'll end midtable.................why not follow thread......day after tuesday and day before thursday, keep at your owl(own)

been done before Norwich and Southampton, who knows what will happen

Bookies give Blades odds of 25/1. A good odds for an each-way bet for top three.

I've taken those odds ... just for the hell of it
but will be happy if we win more than we lose ... with a couple over the pigs and leeds for good measure
and can we please hammer those arrogant prats from walsall
we sure owe them one

I really can't see us going down. I'm not having anyone tell me that Burton, Millwall, Bolton and Ipswich's squads are better than ours - added to the fact we have a much better manager than all those says no chance of relegation for me.

I would much rather us have a top class manager such as Wilder than spend fortunes on cast offs coming for a pay day.

With Wilder anything is possible, but I think midtable to play offs would be a good season for us. UTB!

Southampton and Nowich won promotion from L1 and then again to the prem soon after.
Wigan and wolves stormed the same division but struggled after, wigan going straight back down & wolves being around the bottom end of the table, though of course this will change with their new ownership.

As good as we were last season, a dominant L1 team does not equal a top championship team. We simply don't have the class of players to expect being anywhere near the promotion places.

We do however have some players who could play in a top 6 side. Build around them and add quality over and above what we have, and we would have a much better chance. Right now i'd say we're about 5 quality players short of a top side.

I would love to be proven wrong, and of course there's no harm in trying :D

Not true regards Wolves, in fact the season after they won L1 they only missed out on the play offs by goal difference despite winning 78 points. The key is continuity, and Wolves had that with Jackett. Wigan dumped Caldwell way too early and paid the price, Bristol City did the same with Cotterill and struggled as a result. The one thing United have to do is build under this management team, shake off the bad spells that will inevitably occur and keep the foundation of what has been successful in the last year. If we do that and remain patient, it won't be too long before we build a squad that can legitimately expect to have a crack at promotion.

I'm not of the opinion we will do that well with the squad we have right now, I think we are still light at the back, one short up front as well as needing a quality goalkeeper to challenge Moore. But we should be absolutely fine and would expect us to finish between 10th and 14th.

Thanks for correcting me Coily, I hadn't realised Wolves did that well the year immediately after promotion. They must've slipped since then.

The broader point is that some sides continue to do well whereas others struggle, but I agree continuity is key, and we do seem to have that in our favour.

I think your assessment of our squad strength and likely finishing position is spot on. The one thing which remains an unknown factor is the jtw, and if Wilder decides to go for any targets he finds appealing. This could alter the shape of our side in the 2nd half of the season.
