Possible Summer Targets - Premier League

If signing both is an (affordable) option then I'd be all for it.

As for Holgate, at 22, he's at an age where he's probably going to be pestering for 1st team football. If Everton sign any more defenders and he's pushed further down the pecking order, there could be potential for a permanent deal. (All speculation on my part I'd point out)

Seamus Coleman is their current first choice, he's 30 now and I don't think he's too convincing. If I were them I'd be looking at bringing Holgate through in that position.

Jesus, didn't realise Coleman was that old, you're probably right

Harlee Dean - Entering his prime as a CB, and the last year of his contract. Could cover all 3 CB positions. Decent enough on the ball and a leader. Would fit in quite well.

Reece Oxford
- 20 year old CB or CM. Athletic and good on the ball. Good potential. Was said to be moving to Augsburg for £8m but that's gone a bit quiet. I think a move to us is the sort of thing he needs. Great chance he's a cunt though.

Conor Hourihane
- Has one year left on his contract. Would be excellent competition for Fleck if Villa don't go up. Left footed, quite an all rounder, scores goals and is a set piece specialist.

Joe Rothwell
- Versatile forward thinking midfielder with a burst of pace and close control. Looked great at Bramall Lane for Blackburn. Has now become a regular. Now would be the time to get him before he gains too much value. Being spoken of as Dack's replacement.

Sheyi Ojo - Left footed attacking midfielder. Bags of ability. But he's done fuck all on loan in France. Don't know what's wrong with him. Should be available permanently from Liverpool.

Why is no one coming up with a list of players from the academy?

Thought that was the future and money well spent?
Because we’ve pulled significant amounts of funding from it (comparatively) over the past 2-3 years and it’s not producing potential Premier League level youngsters as it once did.
The fact that bigger clubs could just take kids from our academy that’s we’d put years of expense into for next to no return meant we changed our approach.
I can see it being scaled back even more and us just looking to take those who fall out of other bigger teams academy systems for their last year or so.

£20 million summer budget could put down payments on 4 x £15 million players.
Then that would really be a commitment to a budget of 60 million.which is a bit more like it
But we need more than 4 players

I don't see many free transfers we could use to balance out the spend. Maybe Leroy Fer. Stefan Johansen and Yoann Barbet are others.

Beyond that I see very little. You don't get the same amount of decent free agents at PL level.

Don’t forget wages come out of the budget too, frees are not free

If you think the £20million budget includes wages then we won’t be spending on anybody. Our wages this year were more than £20million. I would expect our total budget for the year to be £60 million+ including wages.

Not saying that just pointing out that frees aren’t free and do make a hole in the budget too

With coutts and cranie gone

And Carruthers, lagferty, henegan, Thomas, wright, Evans, Clark and Holmes all available.

Not to mention, dowell, madine, hogan and henoo (for now) now longer

We going to have to make some serious additions this summer to flesh out the squad even if not all are first team starters.

I agree, but the second line of your post was irrelevant because they weren't really part of anything this season anyway

Solid but unproven centre halves around the age of 23-26 are worth considering.

They tend to develop later in that position as it's a lot about experience, the mental side of the game and knowledge of the game.

There are countless examples of CBs in the PL who established themselves there around their mid 20s.

There are a number of these types in the Championship who could step up. I think Jake Cooper's one example, at 24.

Dwight Gayle - Sadly I know I'll end up coming round to the idea of signing this twat so I'll put his name here in advance.

One thing that surprised me though is that West Brom apparently see him as a future coach/manager due to 'the things he sees in games and in training'.

He also seems quite mentally strong in a 'doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks' sort of way.

Has played the lone role up front on occasions as well.

Newcastle don't want him. Affordable wages. Starts to tick a lot of boxes actually, doesn't he?

I suppose it would take nothing for him to win us over...... because Madine.

Matt Clarke - Left footed Pompey CB. Won all their awards. Good on the ball. Only a year left on his contract seemingly. He could bypass the Championship and end up in the PL next season, don't be surprised if we move for him. He ticks all the boxes.

Matej Vydra - Was rumoured we we're looking at a potential loan in Jan so if there was any truth in that, then he is a player Wilder is obviously keen on.

Surely would now fit better into our transfer & wage budget.

Maybe he isn't quite at the level of an experienced PL player, but assuming we will need a fair amount of money to put goals in the team, then savings elsewhere are the order of the day, so I put forward Yoann Barbet.

Released by Brentford. But the reason for this is not that he wasn't up to it, it was that he turned down a new contract for a new challenge.

They've been playing a back three of late and his listed positions are centre back and left back.

Whilst he wouldn't be first pick, both Enda and Jack will definitely be two we are looking to step up, as well as Egan, so having one guy who can cover all three and is out of contract would be a plus for me.

He's 26 so coming up to his peak, he played 37 games last season, comes from a club who play the ball out and he was a fans favorite as well as being a decent height. I'd have more confidence in him stepping in and doing a solid job than of Keen Bryan being the one to depend on.

I know I mentioned him before, but him and Stefan Johansen would be decent frees who would add to the overall quality of the squad without commanding a fee.

I do see the logic in this. I haven’t seen much of them play but the idea is good.

I think Barbet is a decent idea although I want us to stay all British and Irish now. We do need to look for savings whilst getting the required quality and that looks very hard without signing one or two foreigners. Unless we can spend £50-60m.

Johansen has now signed a new contract at Fulham. So that's him off the list. I guess it's smart from them. Him, McDonald and Cairney is a fully proven promotion standard Championship midfield.

I didn't know that. I think there must have been a window for getting him but looks like Fulham have shut that.

I think we need a few decent frees to get the numbers up without filling the side with dross. Any thoughts?

We could gamble on going with Luca Connell as one of the midfield signings as a way of keeping costs down.

I say gamble in terms of next season. He'd be nothing of a gamble in terms of cost and resale value.

He's out of contract so it'd go to a tribunal. Maybe £2m or so.

Everyone's favourite Sun Journalist reckons the tribunal fee for Connell will be around £300k. Potential bargain for somebody if true.

Wow, that's very unfair. But an absolute bargain and a no brainer. Unless he's a massive twat or something. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have a huge amount of clubs to choose from.

I think Barbet is literally perfect for us.
Would be fantastic competition for JOC and of course Egan. Could play LWB at a stretch too.

Him on a free is an absolute no brainier.
