or Up Man tablets

It's worthy of note for all the flouncers and wrist slashers, that the famous promotion season of 70-71, which us older folk often cream our pants to, started off with a sequence of LWLDD, beginning with a hefty defeat at mighty Orient. The rest, as they say....

It is 45 years ago today that we lost 3-1 at Orient despite Colin Addison giving us a half time lead. I remember that day well. It was a lovely day but my dad decided that Orient was "too far" and took me to watch Chesterfield play Aston Villa (yes they were in 3rd division). The previous week my dad was showing me Sunday Express' prediction for the 2nd division table at the end of the season. They had Blades at the top and Orient to finish bottom. Now back to the Chesterfield v Villa match... at half time Saltergate's scoreboard were indicating that the Blades were winning 1-0 at Orient. We didnt know the final score when we were coming back home (my dad didnt have radio in his car at the time). Of course my mum didnt check out the final scores on Grandstand or World of Sports. I was still feeling confident that the Blades had won at Orient until a mate (a Wendy fan) called round my house. He told me that Orient had won 3-1 and that Wendy had beaten Charlton 1-0. I was stunned and the thought of promotion seemed to be a distant dream!
Yes, we had picked only 3 points from the first four games and in the 5th game we were losing 3-0 at home to Bristol City (Hodgy had a mare) with 15 minutes left and there was a group of angry Blades fans being escorted out of the ground by the police. Goals from Woody, Dearden and Tudor (in injury time) made it 3-3

The photo below is of Tudor's equaliser hooking the ball over his head after a overhead kick by Hemsley. Woody barely hides his joy at the equaliser

Those 3 seasons (1968 - 1971) in Division 2 (as it was) are as clear now as they were then. The first two seasons we started off like a bull in a china shop and promotion seemed inevitable. But sometimes like the weather it was all too bright too early. That third season as you point out Silent was a poor start and the natives were getting restless (sound familiar). If the internet had been around in those days it would have been in meltdown. Our only method of venting our frustrations was via 'Tell it to Tony' in the Green 'Un.

But it all turned out well and for many of us the start of witnessing the best footballing side seen at BDTBL.

Even in January 1971 (before any transfer windows) we sold our leading goalscorer (?) to Newcastle (sound familiar) but with inspired signings of John Hope, David Ford and Trevor Hockey we really kicked on.

the game looks less appealing everu passing year

the lack of real characters has left us with over trained automotons

having 18 players run out for a game is utterly ridiculous
lets get back to one sub a goalie and go back to 11 v 11

Its also the lack of pace and skill, the style of play too. In Woody's day we would have proper wingers, exciting football. That's all gone. No character, stick an s on it and its true too as you say.
First half today was like a half hearted kickabout in a park. No urgency, side, forward, back, lose ball. Fall asleep.
Making progress though but the game itself is worsening by the year.
Wonder what the mood will be like on here after the first decent team we play?

Aar. Them were t'days!

Are people still on the brink of turning their back for good or is all well now?
Funny old game eh?

Yes, I'm going back out to work again soon and I've played golf every Saturday whilst the match has been on. I haven't been to the Lane, watched on TV or listened to one second of commentary since the Gillingham game.
So I'm now convinced..........IT'S ME !!!!!!!!!

How good is that, I can support the club and as long as I have fuck all to do with 'em it'll all be ok :D

Jim Phipps been on Twitter to communicate with the fans and he drinks with the fans and he sings with the fans is a loads of bollocks. He's only on it to blow smoke up his own arse when idiots start worshipping him after 1 win on a Saturday.

Starting to think I actually preferred it before the new owners and Phipps came in. Okay so we were in debt and didn't spend much but at least you knew the situation. All this big investment and Prem in 5 years and #UnitedTogether is a load of pig shit

Michael Palin is a United supporter.
In his diary's (the books that were released) he mentions going watching wednesday a lot and how he like it. Granted i didn't read all of them but i definitely read bits about the pigs and taking his son. I was gutted!

It's starting to become difficult to tell which parts of this thread are ironic and which parts are serious....

Anyone know where I can get a Greasy Chip Butty ring tone?
