ive spent the last 3 months engrossed by the endless diet of cricket on the telly, and enjoyed every single minute of it, and not missed the football season one little bit.

It's actually caught me unaware a little bit, went to the Newcastle pre-season friendly, purely because an old friend who rarely goes asked me if I was going and I only went to catch up with him more than anything.

Then it has started, I renewed my season ticket at the back end of last season, Christ knows why because with the notable exception of the Tottenham game the only match I have attended in 2015 that I have enjoyed was a trip to Edinburgh for the Hibs v Hearts local derby.

Earlier on I didn't really feel any hope or expectation of a good season. More or less half expecting to be here attain, in this godforsaken division next season under yet another new manager, making the same old sound bites, but never actually doing anything positive.

All we have had is more and more spin from Jim Phipps who drinks with the fans, engages with the fans on social media, and drinks with the fans in the sanitised atmosphere of the Copthorne but for all his sound bites as a club we have not gone forward.

The transfer dealings have been shocking, a hopefully inadequate job lot of piss poor defenders haven't been drummed out of the club. McFadzean is pretty much Worksop Town standard player, and is not up to required standard and will not be as long as I have for a hole in my arse. Collins has 3 years too many on the books, he is part of the problem rather than part of the cure. Jay McEveley was far and away our worst defender for the last 4 months of last season, yet he gets a new contract, and not only that but he also gets made fucking club captain, and then last of those, Kieron Freeman, I spoke briefly to a mate earlier and said I was gonna watch the goals going to see how many he was culpable for by either not putting a tackle in, or being woefully out of position, and guess what, for Gillinghams 4th, Dack just walks straight past him with the ball, Freeman is supposed to be a fucking defender, yet he spent the first half of last season barely able to get a game for Mansfield bastard Town.

Then back to the incoming players. Billy Sharp has made a career out of two good seasons at Scunthorpe ten years ago, he might be a Blade, but then so am I but you wouldn't me playing up front for us would you. You can ignore all this Billy Blade bullshit, I fucking guarantee he wouldn't be here if we paid him what I think he is worth which is at the very most a grand a week. Connor Sammon belongs in the Irish League or Scottish lower leagues at the very best, and Woolford, the only coherent reason I can think that we have signed him is that he is one of Adkins bumboys. At least under Negative Nigel we got Derby old boys under Positive Nigel we get Scunthorpe old boys.

As for the rest of the squad, James Wallace is a fucking crock and which ever clown in the medical department who was responsible for him passing a medical needs sacking. Jose Baxter is a dirty little druggie who thinks he is better than he is, and I hope his next E is laced with rat poison.

I'm seriously thinking of turning my back after 30 years of going to watch a United week in, week out. I don't buy all the spin and bullshit peddled by Phipps and Adkins. Our Saudi investors aren't investing, McCabe has got what he wanted which is the freehold of the ground, and it wouldn't surprise me if he is making a tidy profit from the lease of the ground. Yet we the fans buy all the shit, spin and bullshit. Makes me think back to when we was a proper club, whose fans were second to none, and who wouldn't suffer fools gladly, yet we have turned in to a sorry bunch of sycophantic idiots who blindly follow all the bullshit that the club peddles.

I'm on the brink of deciding to fuck United off all together and find something else to do that will enhance my life on a Saturday afternoon, and you can guarantee that if we find ourselves in the same position this time next season I will not be there to watch.

#UnitedTogether sorry but that bullshit just doesn't wash with me.

Before today was perhaps the most optimistic I've ever felt as a Blade. What a kick in the bollocks. Same old shit. I'm sat here this evening and I'm thinking I don't know if I'll bother at all with them anymore. It really does never change

Yet spot on Brownie, if we don't expect more we will never get more.

For me the same is happening, to me its happening gradually, like a slow, silent break up of a marriage. I don't feel enthusiasm for blowing around,27 quid a,week on that. I actually expected a bad start today.

I am beginning to think a big mistake was replacing Weir. If we had left him in position for another 3 months we would have been relegated to the bottom tier, this would have had the effect of 1981, and
under a Paul Sturrock level manager galvanised us to sweep div 4 aside and get the losing culture out of our system.

We are stuck and established at this level now, going nowhere.

I remember thinking that when we dropped out of the premiership in the 90s. A decade of shite followed.

We've at last got a manager who is a winner. Let's get to the end of the first transfer window before we put too much significance in events.

UTB

yet another new manager, making the same old sound bites, but never actually doing anything positive.

All summer to sort out the goalkeeping/central defensive problems. Absolutely f**k all done about it.
And that's before you even think about the lesser problem of the lightweight midfield.

Endless positivity isn't going to sort those problems out.

Btw a bit of honesty from the club about why exactly there's been no transfer activity in these vital areas would be more than welcome (not that it'd ever be forthcoming).

You'll be happy to know that I saw Baxter leave on crutches

Massively depressing as this result is in the wake of all the optimism lately, I think it will get sorted. We have a management team in place that does have the ability and track record to deal with this. I think talk of bumboys and being glad to see players on crutches is fucking crazy.

I am sure the OP will get the usual 'don't go then' and some critisicm but many will ask same questions if things do carry on with no potential for any semblance of success.

I still get a season ticket and go away now and again but I cant justify spending £50 on ticket/travel etc for away games anymore. Not on a club/team that is constantly failing/letting you down. You can take that as being not as much of a supporter as others but when you have a young family/money to juggle, there are other priorties in life. I admire those that keep going but when I saw all the tweets and pictures of fans going down along with the respect for going down and still following SUFC...I also thought why do you put yourself through this. Its weird but I used to go away a lot but when you stop going you don't miss it as much. I can see Brownies frustration. I would think it would be once unimaginable I would not get a season ticket or be a regular a few years ago but the constant shite served up by this club means I am not sure I would be that surprised in a few years f I did stop going. I never thought I would say that.

All this #unitedtogether bollox is patronising beyond belief. Hard to remain United when they constantly are such a let down. Sick of all the talking.soundbytes/web site/twitter garbage. Put up or shut up. That is from the chairman, to the manager to the players.

Its Saturday night of the first football season and twitter/facebook/even that crappy new c5 show confirms we are a laughing stock. Again.

Great post brownie I know exactly where you are coming from the only thing that made me renew my ST after watching some of the most dire performances under Clough last season was that I have reached 60 and got a large concession for the first time. I was fully expecting Clough to be given another season to my surprise he was sacked and we got Adkins in on paper the best we could ever have hoped for. I think today has brought everyone back down to Earth, nothing really has changed we still have no central defenders worth a wank yet we sign two strikers and what looks like a journeyman midfielder. WTF is Adkins thinking about here when the defence has more holes than a cartoon cheese on Tom & Jerry ? We have a midfield full of midgets and crocks and a couple of keepers who couldn't keep a clean sheet if they both played at the same time. If that aint bad enough not one of the first team have any heart, fight or passion, I suppose this is what you get when a bunch of players know if they were to somehow win promotion they would be out of a job, I only see one or two in this lot who might just be able to step up another level. It makes me wonder if at board level they are content to flirt with the play off's and stay where we are while 20,000 mugs turn up every week, I can see what is coming in the next week or two we will bring in a couple of CB's but sell Murphy to finance it afterall it is the Blades Way. This club over the last ten years has really fucked me off but the straw that breaks the camels back is when the players put in a half arsed performance like today, what a weak spineless set of pussies. NA could ship the lot out tomorrow for all I care and I hope he does if not I won't be at the lane next season, I can live with players not being good enough but I can't accept useless twats that can't or don't care enough to put the effort in.

from your most optimistic ever to not bothering any more in one game? That is a tad bipolar ;)

Fuck that's depressing.
Hard to argue with you with the mood they've put me in today though.

I'll wait until April before I decide my level of commitment to this shit. No choice really since I've forked out for a season ticket.
As stated in a previous post, it's not so much the shite results, it's the utter fucking gutlessness of the 'performances' that I find unforgivable. Not to mention the avalanche of bullshit from the owners about how we're on the up.
I have to work my bollocks off to obtain enough expendable income to follow these bastards, the very least they can do is show they're worth the effort.

Spot on.

I think today was clear that we need a massive clear out of the shit we have. The board have to decide if they really want out of this league or not and if they do open up the cheque book and let Nigel bring in what he needs.

I would probably say 6 of the starting 11 aren't good enough including the back 5 plus Baxter, play bash at centre half plus 3 new players needed, either give Howard the shirt back or get a new keeper as long is awful. We need a dominant midfield captain who bosses the game.

We have a lot of work to do but whoever plays needs our backing and next Saturday more than ever because if we start losing a few more we will end up in a rut like 2 years ago.

True, but who saw that coming?

Me for one. Supported the Blades since 1978, and know all about optimistic pre-seasons. Remember pre-season with Robson, and Weir? Or our first season in Division 3 under Harry Haslam. Even last pre-season with Clough, after our amazing run to the brink of the Play Offs.

Blind pre-season optimism followed by disappointment. It's the Blades Way.

I might be over-reacting but I don't care after today.

As you rightly point out, there's a number of problems with our squad.

First of all it's 10-15 players too large, why on earth we haven't done a single thing about this throughout the entirety of the summer is nothing short of a complete joke. Not to even mention only signing what looks from today like 3 awful signings in positions that were already littered with dross and needed clearing out.

Midfield is mostly over-run with bang average journeymen who at their absolute optimum will play in a mid-table league two side.

Above all, the board seem all the more happy to let another season slip out of our hands with not one show of urgency from either themselves or Adkins to approach the season as though they mean promotion.

I've also nearly had it with this joke of a club.

Not been today so of course can't comment on the game - but going on what I've read and heard it was obviously a bad and, some have said, spineless performance.

I had wondered if some of the bad - and I would say maybe nervous as much as spineless - performances I saw in the league at home last season were down to the management team and the way they prepared the players, not to mention the obvious issues/fallouts that had gone on behind the scenes close season, the singling out of individuals for criticism, and the general overcautious play for a point at home approach, etc etc

There was one game for me when I thought the team seemed to come out really prepped for a league 1 scrap, fighting for every ball, closing down etc and that was Port Vale - it was a tight 1-0 but it worked. Don't know why that wasn't repeated.

So I had thought maybe a large part of the problem (not all of it obviously - height and abilty to defend set pieces for example) was maybe personalities, management, psychology and all that and I know Adkins is big on all that. A lot have been saying in light of the pre-season that this is a good squad that just needs a bit of tweaking. And then we get stuffed 4-0 and I just wonder how much of a clear out do we actually need?
