Lady in white coat; "Is that the Wilder lad we've just passed?"
"Fxxk him if it is" said lady in black.

Thread Police alert!

Hoping his Bertness doesn't mind the intersection; stuff about Wilder under Basset is just about fine, but his role as manager is far too contemporary for this thread.

They do. My memory is that there was a dusting of snow in places. Wednesday’s match that day was called off because of a frozen pitch, and the grainy pics in my scrapbook look that way; but that could well have helped create a false memory.

Judging from that pic I'd say it was snow, cos they'd swept it off the white lines as they used to before undersoil heating.

can remember spurs beating crewe 13 - 2 in the cup think it was the frozen winter of 62/63 could be wrong though might have been earlier
February 1960. When the Crewe team returned home by train, they departed Euston from Platform 13 and arrived on platform 2 at Crewe station !!

We should have won the Cup that time round. Who did win it?

I think the 1958 FA cup winners was Bolton. Beat Man Utd 2-0. Lofthouse scored. Man Utd remarkably reached the final only months after the Munich disaster.

I think Harry Gregg Man Utd goalkeeper was badly injured by Lofthouse when he scored. That goal wouldn't stand today.

Patches look more like sand.
Believe it to be snow as the six yard box line has been cleared rather than scattering of sand by shovels.

1958 final, Gregg shook up, fair shoulder charge by Lofthouse, knocking him into goal.
1957 final, Ray Wood pole axed by attempted shoulder charge, got hit in face, by McParland, had to leave field more than likely concussed. Returned as passenger on wing.
Blanchflower took over in goal, McParland scored twice to win cup for Villa. Believe Tommy Taylor scored for Man. Utd.

Lacking in so much detail .

Departure and arrival times ? Name , number and class of locomotive ? I could go on but choose to spare your blushes . :D

In the late 1960’s Sheffield Council had a number of ‘exciting’ and ‘futuristic’ plans for the modernisation of the city .

One of these , which came perilously close to being implemented , was to compulsory purchase and demolish virtually the whole of Walkley in order to construct a development based on the Kelvin flats , but on a much bigger scale .

These monstrosities were built at a huge cost and , having had fortunes spent on them in maintenance , were demolished in less than 30 years .

Thanks to few brave and determined souls , this potential calamity was avoided and does not appear on the long list of fuck ups which our local politicians have been responsible for over a very long period .
Some very nice houses on on Carr rd. Resident was telling me about this plan to bulldoze them all. Ridiculous idea.

Was that the replay after a 0-0 draw at Oakwell (Which Bert went to)?
can remember going on the ponty end mid 60s for a county cup game was about 2 to 3 hundred blades on there and it got a bit naughty

Our very own Jedi master. How did he manage to unearth good players and for nowt ?
Would like to see a list of all those who were signed when JH was here. Not completely down to him I suppose, but he must have had some decent scouts and contacts.
Wasn't there a guy called Archie Clarke who did a lot of scouting and recommending at this time .?

No way was that goal a result of a fair shoulder charge.
Ray Wood,I think, had his cheekbone fractured by McP
Great photo.! He looks like a prosperous bookie.!

can remember us beating barnsley 9 - 0 in a county cup final late 60s i think
Looked it up for you, CCSFR, April 16th '69 HT 4-0, scorers, Staniforth-2, Tudor-3, Colquhoun-2, Buckley and Fenoughty. Att. 5148.
After a 2-2 draw at Oakwell, CCSF, Jan 24th '69 HT 0-2, scorers Reece, Tudor. Att. 10031.
Final V Doncaster Rovers away, May 9, 0-0, replayed April 20th '70, at the Lane won 2-0, HT1-0, scorers, Salmons and Woodward. Att. 5612.
Seems there was little to in Barnsley in 1969.

Archie must have been hard, no cardi. Great photo, by the way, was wondering where it was taken.

Missed mi "do" out in post 21260, Bugger.

Fair charge from where I was sat in Hollinsend, clear as day, even ref. on the day said so.
Surly you wanted Nat to get a medal like Stanley had in '53.
Fortune shone on Lofthouse that year, if The Babes had turned up, runners up was what he was looking at.

John Tudor actually scored a tenth with his head but the ref disallowed it for been all over their defender. Went to the Dony Rovers one with a couple of mates ,don't know the crowd but didn't seem to be many there. Just remember one of their fans been massive and had on a vivid red jacket ; even remember them calling him Big Archie. Boy it looked like he had been hit with the ugly stick a few times.

As you say the 1968/69 final was played on April 20th 1970 - a whole year late, when we beat Donny Rovers 2-0. (It was a 13-1 corner count in our favour).

Three days later (23rd April 1970) we played Barnsley in the County Cup semi final for the 1969/70 season. It ended up 0-0. Attendance 4253.

So I suppose that replay got carried over into the following season.

I bet we all had far fetched ideas that only a pandemic could cause such a fixture pile up!

I’m with you on those 2. Lofthouse barged into Gregg’s back, not his shoulder; even in those days, that was a foul.
The charge on Wood was ridiculous. Not only should McParland have been sent off, he should have been charged with assault. It was a pre-meditated attack in the opening minutes, which won them the match.

both would have been red carded in the modern game

oh dont silent my favourite centre forward of all time what a player mick was as ive said before i was absolutely devastated when wraggy sold him to leeds and that headed goal against man utd on boxing day 66 is still the best headed goal ive ever seen in 60 years of going to the lane

Pity the CC went that way, put on the back burner, eventually abandoned.
I always thought it a good competition whilst growing up, and only a short bus or train ride away if United were away, and what a trophy, second to none.
I have a photo of the CC, a thing of beauty, but cannot get it to load, apologies.
