Thx I was sure I used to go to Violet mays on Duke St. Great shop for vinyl. Used to visit a girlfriend on Bernard St and always popped in if it was open ( V/Ms that is). Remember buying a second hand My Generation album by The Who.

?

Her shop was on South Street in 1963 and the album wasn't released until 1965....

Final days of S and E Co-op, Ecclesall Rd .
Jan 1987.
As a child in the late 50's/early 60's, my main memories (maybe)are : Santa's grotto, the rickety, concertina-doored lift with the attendant and getting my school uniforms.

The Co-op also had that vacumn style payment method where your money was sent to the cashier on some overhead system.

I remember having end of season awards dinner in their function room when I played for the Abbey Hotel.

You missed the Norfolk ,that was my Father in laws weekend crawl ,managed to get barred from most of them but they always let him back in. His weekday locals were the Steel Inn ,Merrie Monk and Manor castle and occasionally the Windsor but he always got in a scrap in there.
I played for Windsor for twelve years, we had an excellent team during 70's/80's, rising from Sheffield Amateur League through to County Senior Premier during that time.
Nights after training and presentation evenings were memorable for numerous reasons. The characters in there were something to behold 😉.

And Banners.
That's interesting. When I was trying to recall about S and E, I couldn't quite remember whether those vacuum tubes were there are not. Like you say ST, I also remember them at Banners.
But weren't they also in other dept stores in town???

I remember going up to the Windsor late 60’s to see the team leaving for a game on a coach....think it was a cup final

Sorry , I don't recall the Picture Palace not being from that end of town .

What I can say is that Violet's was on the left hand side going up and , from memory , about 150 yds. from the bottom .

Hope that helps .

I can't remember it on Duke Street but it's listed as 199, which would put it close to Park Library which is a bit more than 150 yards up the street. Past Bernard Street and Manor Oaks Road in fact. There's a reference to 35 The Pavement, which would be almost exactly where you said, opposite the shopping centre on Park Hill flats early sixties which also had a "pavement" .

My nannan & grandad lived on crown place, and that was one of the pubs they used daily, along with the Brunswick, sun inn,old harrow and the ball, amongst others...😁

Did Chico Hamilton turn out for the Windsor.

Great photos of the S&E coop, on match days as a youth I would catch the 88 bus from Nether Green to the bottom of Eccy Rd & then walk through the coop & out the rear entrance - pre match ritual.

But did other stores have milk tokens?
Can anyone remember the co-op having little metal containers (might even have carried the mill tokens) running across the ceiling on wires?

Nice one XM. Is that a Joe Scarborough type print. If it's accurate it shows the Liver bird and Higsons brewery's name on the King's Head, the mysterious Cowshed actually on the opposite corner to the Norfolk
As Tony says, G. Cunningham, he and Scarborough have similar styles but both equally as pleasing.
'Hawkeye' got to be your middle name ,well spotted. Kings Arms and Higsons solved but Norfolk Vaults it's who to believe.
My maternal grandma worked in the Norfolk Market Hall from my first memories mid 40's, and before, till it closed think '59 when I was 17. Listening to her and others my impression was and always has been it was under the market hall. George Cunningham seems to confirm this but Douglas Lamb puts it ln Dixon Lane between the Rock Tavern and Norfolk Arms but doesn't give what number Dixon Lane. He gives the numbers for the other two plus one non of us will have been in, 'Board' at no. 6 DL opened in 1833, no closing date. Market Hall opened 1851, could the licence for the 'Board' have been transferred to new premises under NMH, and renaming Norfolk(In the NMH) and Vaults(vault being an arched structure, which in this case would be holding up the floor of NMH and usable for commercial use.
Convinced myself and my Gran. plus G Cunningham V Douglas Lamb equals 2 V 1 so that's it under't market hall. I don't know what year this is but concurs with Lamb ref. Rock and Norfolk's street numbers, but shows no pub between the two as he shows in his book APOEC, pointing m'i thinks to NV being under NMH.Dixon Lane plan(2).png

We had one at British Steel Tinsley Park Works. My office was miles from the main office site and one bit of fun to be had was sending dead mice amongst other dead beasts to some of the accounting offices for girls over there to discover when they opened the capsule.

Yep, Billy played for Windsor for over 20 years.
Still pals with Bill and hear from him regularly. See him too in normal times. Brilliant player.
Remember he always stood out.......not as good as you though 😉
