Was the 59 that one that did a sort of truncated no 2, the outer circle? Loved a ride top deck front row on the 2. Hours on the bus for for two pence.
Are you saying it doesn’t run anymore? Classic route going past some massive houses in S10. A good nosey that was. Used to put 4 half pences in that automatic machine they had in the 80s to the right of the door that photocopied em on the back.
Does the 8 and 9 still run?

Yep, used to get it from Carterknowle Road into town. Caught the 2 back from town once but it stopped for ages at Crosspool.
My Nan used to take me on it and tell me stories about different places, I loved then a few years later we used to wag School on it, a ride on the 2 on the 59 and a Herdings to Lodge Moor on the 52 ?Took us all day.

I remember that run of games, I went to the home games against Arsenal & Bolton. My Wednesday supporting mates at school thought they were funny with the quip ‘what’s Sheff Utd’s new phone number? (Answer) 051551’ - gits!
In the early 70’s, when our city neighbours weren’t very good, the gag used to be

“What’s the time down Hillsborough?”

“Five past Grummitt!”

I’m here all week…..

When I was a lad the number 2 went one way round the circle and the number 3 went in the opposite direction.
It was the 51 from Herdings to Lodge Moor.

Hodgy alus, well a lot of seasons, especially 60's, wore different soxs to the rest of the team.

Des Thompson carries on the tradition, but with due respect, not quite as skilfully.

Alf Ringstead was a fine player I gather. I knew people who looked after him at Woodland View nursing home, he had Alzheimers apparently and died in 2000.
A Dubliner I understand. Excellent winger and goalscorer too.

One of my biggest regrets is not going to the Match at home when Alan came over to the Lane for the last time before he died , I was away but didn't know he was going to be there , I would have driven the 200 miles there and back if I knew he was going to be presented at half time and waited to talk to the man after the match best player ever to wear the red and white ! He never like been worshiped or lorded but boy did he deserve it wish we had him now !

Awkward interview.
Seemed a humble bloke anyway.
My first ever football hero.

My grandma was at Norton Lees so we used the 2 to get there and back. Always called for a tub of ice cream in the shop on Lees Hall Avenue.

The clock in the Co-op on Montrose Road was always 5 mins fast so they could catch the 17:00 circular.

Thats why I was always on time for school , I passed that Coop every morning after nipping into Knab fruit shop for a bag of sweets.

He had never seen a football league match until he played his 1st team debut!

Great post. The last 2 photos provoke contrasting emotions - the last one at West Ham is classic Hodgy (athletic catch), the one before is the nightmare spell when Des Thompson replaced Hodgy because of, dare I say it, Hodgy’s broken thumb…

The fact Hodgy wore different soxs has always fascinated me and I always thought it was a personnel thing.
Finding 'Daz' Thompson also did the same makes me wonder if it was a club kit decision.
I admit to being a kit geek,
All started when I received a 'Subbuteo' set and in the box was a paper sheet with all the 92 FLC's + Scottish LC's, of that time, (c1950) kits enabling purchase of the team of your choice.
The figures then were flat and had to be glued into base. No plastic glues then and paper glues created more injuries than Blades have had this season.

March 16 1982.
United 7 Northampton Town 3.
This is Daily Mirror, St Patricks day.
20 years later, the notorious WBA abandoned game took place on March 16.
