In a previous existence as an accident Claims Investigator for the NCB/British Coal I always tried to arrange my visits to Brookhouse on a Friday as that was fish and chip day and I used to get a free dinner

I walked along the site of the colliery today along the pit lane that joined Brookhouse to Waleswood Pit. I think the pit lane was used to transfer coal from Waleswood to the coke ovens at Brookhouse.

A maintenance bloke was in my office in Clydebank in 1995 and , noting my Bramall Lane portrait on the wall , said ' My Da used to play for yous , clearly before your time.'

This bloke was called Davie Russell.

Next time I was back in Sheffield I relayed this to my Dad, who was very ill at the the time.

His face lit up when he said ' Billy Russell, crowd loved him , shirked nothing, be worth millions today.'
