I believe the one with the constructing building is Pond St and the other is what is now Tudor Sq.
A bit of a coincidence this....I was just about to post this pic. Taken from Shrewsbury Road area in Feb 1989.
Anongst other things, on the far right, it shows the building that XM657 refers to in answer to Ishouldcoco's query about SEB's post. You can see the curvy thingies on the roof in both shots.

Real puzzler the Pond St one. It's taken me since yesterday until this morning for the penny to drop. First thoughts were Tippet Lane, with West St and Labour Exchange at top of photo but the b/w with bulls eye windows made me re think. For the life of me, despite recognising the b/w, I couldn't locate it in my brain. What was that building used for? Presumably it was part of an emerging Technical College.
Top marks for the technical jargon.;)

Yes, I believe that site started out as the College of Technology, but became the "Poly" pretty soon after , when it merged with the Design College.
In that actual building, I spent a year of my life studying HND electrical engineering at night school in the early 70''s.
To complete the set, as it were, here are 3 more shots, taken from the same spot - Feb 1989

You wouldn't get much sun on the north side of that in the winter.

Anybody know what the local relevance of the name Kelvin was?
No. Not originally. All I can find is that there was a Kelvin Street and the Kelvin Grove pub in the immediate area. So I’m guessing the flats were named because of those but I don’t know why the street was called Kelvin.

I give up.

I can't picture where either of these are.

Anybody want to help a sad old fart?

As said by others the first is Pond St and the building of the Technical College which became the Polytechnic.

The 2nd pic was taken from Tudor Street looking out onto what is now Tudor Square, to the right would now be The Crucible.

Do you mean the Ford Pop?
Its quite unusual to know exactly where you were conceived, so well done you!
