Socks look the same to me. Here are the 1971/72 and 1972/73 squad photos

The Royal blue socks were from the 1972/73 away kit they wore with the diagonal stripe. They wore both types during the season looking at photos available.

May I also take this opportunity to say, THANK YOU, to all on this site, admin and those who contribute posts for the pleasure, entertainment and knowledge it gives me.
Well said. As it's the season of good will, I would even include those whose posts don't provide pleasure, entertainment or knowledge.;)

Funny, they don't look as dirty as I remember on that video. I think it was the complete meltdown in response to the decisions that I recalled. I have just looked at a couple of other clips which do look worse. Several oldies on here will remember the German number 8, Haller, whose ability to dive and roll around injured was second to none; annoyingly, he was a good player. His reactions were controlled, the Uruguayans just lost the plot.

Is that taken on the Bramall Lane end?,and without wishing to be morbid, what struck me was how many on the photo would have lost their lives one year on?

There's an even more poignant photograph taken at Bramall Lane, that was part of the recruitment, conscription campaign. I presume it's a view of the Kop. Again you look at it, realise most would probably form the Sheffield Battalion, and that most wouldn't return.

That's magnificent, shocking and sad all at the same time.

Both are excellent and thought-provoking pictures. I suppose if we are trading numbers, a higher proportion of the people on the WW1 photo would have been killed. Very sad ( sorry, that sounds like Trump).
Am I the only one naive enough to look at something like the 1939 picture thinking I might spot my dad or grandad?

Looking at the one I posted from 1914, I know that relatives of mind were part of the Sheffield Pals and died in the Somme battle. So they may well have been stood on the kop in that picture. I've looked trying to spot relatives like you.

Earsham St taken today. Besides the houses not being there, the biggest difference is the sun never got through the smoke back then. Good old Amey were working behind me resetting the kerbs in preparation for resurfacing Earsham St in the next week or two. IMG_20171208_130839.jpg

he looks pleased to see them, or are his jeans a bit tight.

Yes i was guilty of that

In honour of tonight's match, here's Brizzle Citeh legend Kevin Mabbutt in his prime with a couple of hangers on:

For all the crap in Swillsborough I wouldn't go round in a van with a SHT registration...

And it's no wonder cider is so popular if that's the state of the local crumpet... 8 Pinters them two...

Not quite sure what you are trying to say here, is it the socks or the strips they wore both of during the '72-'73 season. My information says Man. City, for the '72-'73 season, wore sky blue shirts, white shorts and royal blue socks, red turn overs with one white hoop. Looking at Silent's post showing photos of the '72-'73 game this confirms that fact, unfortunately within those photos is the one in question and Doyle is wearing sky blue socks maroon turn overs two white hoops. Did they change their socks mid game or at half time? As I said before no.11 Reece, goalkeeper John B. Hope.

Thank you for the squad photos of Man City. They remind me of some truly good footballers who played, at times, wonderful football but if the couldn't get the better of a side they'd kick them till they did. Any how regarding 34039, no. 11 and goalkeeper in dispute. The Man. City '72-'73 set of photos, from which 34039 is one, make to "save as picture" and 34039 will come up labelled as '71-'72 the others in the batch labelled as '72'-'73, seems the evidence was in the evidence.
Hope you don't mind me asking if you know Cyril Davies, Kevins, dad. I've had the pleasure of working with him in the past, top man Cyril and by all account a good footballer.

Looking at the photos again I hadnt realised that Lee and Bell were wearing different socks in the photos of their goal. Sorry about that.

I had heard a lot about Cyril but I had never met him. The only time I saw him was at Southey WMC one evening with speedymcgeady but I didnt realise it was Cyril who I had wanted to meet (I was told that since he left Sheffield Deaf FC in the early 1970s he hardly ever went to the deaf club). It was a big regret! Many say he was a brilliant footballer (Roy Whitehead is another) and local clubs always try to persuade him to play for them (there were no strict registration rules at the time). In the photo below he is in front row 2nd from right

Does that club still exist and if so are they still called that?

When Doncaster Deaf College formed their own football club, everything was free (no membership or pitch hire fees) for the players so the best Sheffield Deaf players went to join them. I last played for them in 1987 and went back to be a Lane regular even though I played in a few 5 a side tournaments after that. The SDFC folded about 15 years ago. The cricket club folded too, a few years after I stopped playing regularly in 1997

Much obliged for the photo with Cyril on, my word he looks young there to what I remember him. If memory serves, he played at the old Wembley possibly for England Deaf team probably you could enlighten me on that. I also knew a Roy, Whitehead sounds right, talking '86 to 2000 footballing days gone but by all accounts he was an excellent Table Tennis player, still regularly playing competitively when I knew him. One memory of Roy was, like this time of year, when we went for a drink Roy was always the smartest dressed which drew derision from the younger end, all good humoured.

He played for GB in the 1965 Deaflympics at Washington. GB lost to Yugoslavia in the final. Dont know if he played more games for GB after that. I would be surprised if GB deaf ever played in a match at old Wembley but I will ask a friend of mine who knows a lot of GB Deaf football history. Cyril passed away about 12 years ago.

Roy is still around but I have not seen him for a long time. He has had knee operations but I hear he still goes fishing. Yes, he always wore smart when I see him in the Norfolk Arms in the 1980s. He scored a hat trick for GB against West Germany in the 1957 Deaflympics at Milan but the team were eliminated after group stages

Wanted air pistols, rifles, shotguns, swords and old pistols, you'd get locked up selling stuff like that today. The old second hand shops down Attercliffe used to fascinate me as a child they always had loads of electric guitars hanging in the windows.
In the 50,s my dad bought a Fukin Luger from darn' Cliff!!

As can be seen above, they clearly wore both kinds during the season, but the socks you describe while being worn with the home kit, were initially the away kit socks. That's pretty easy to confirm.

Thank you for the info on Cyril and Roy I find it most interesting, had not realised what illustrious company I had been in, what an achievement, greater than playing for England. Nothing like that came from either of them and the Wembley incident was playing for GB, my brain and passage of time.
Sad news of Cyril, even after that length of time, I shall always remember him with a smile because we had some laughs making work so much easier.
I knew Roy better as I worked alongside him for longer periods. Nice to hear of him despite the knee problems, occupational hazard, it's the ladders that get you in the end.
Thanks for all the past info/photos, as to all others who contribute, always interested about United, like most on here it's come down the family and whatever is happening in your life it's always there to greater or lesser extent. Many Thanks again.

Did Sheffield Deaf have a team in the Friendlies League in the 70s? I remember playing a few games against a team who I think had that name, and who were, shall we say, a little robust at times. Partly my fault, I realised, as I did not take into account the full situation at first - when a big lad is looming in on you about to shoot and the referee blows for offside, it is not a good idea to nonchalantly bend down to pick the ball up for the free-kick without taking to account that said lad is unaware that a whistle has blown. I have a painful memory of me and the ball landing in the back of the net. My team-mates thought it was hilarious. A goalie's lot is not a happy lot.

Yes, played in the Friendlies League from 1967 (I think) to 1984. I started playing for them after I left school in 1979. Who did you play for?

How did the refs give signals?

I played in the early 70s for Leopold Villa, which was based around people working in the education offices on Leopold Street; I knew one of the lads who played for them, and enjoyed several years of sloping bogs, howling gales and cold water showers. Loved keeping goal in the mud. Happy days.
