Ha ha hilarious! He's past it now. Great manager in his day

I hear this a lot. What evidence do we have that Warnock is "past it"? He's had a number of very tough jobs since leaving the Blades, some of the toughest in football. He's not suffered a single relegation, and has taken QPR up the PL.

Wenger's older than Warnock. Fergie was older when he retired. Generally, however, it seems that older managers aren't getting a look in these days because for whatever reason clubs prefer younger managers.

Imagine if someone told you that you couldn't do your job any more because you are "past it" even though you're still in your mid-sixties and healthy

Warnock failed his task of keeping us up. .......McCabe would have got loads of stick if he kept the failed manager

Mccabe didn't invest or didn't feel confident in Warnock having a budget to keep us in PL that's why we went down. McCabe sacking him deflected the criticism on him and looked like he was taking action. Since his departure we have sunk like a stone weighed down by McCabe. There have been times when I thought he was a good owner but he always proves me wrong.

What clubs of our size have dropped so low and stayed there with the same owner and without administration or a financial or transfers scandal? It's all down to poor decisions at the top.

I thought he was taking leave from football for personal reasons, presumably illness in the family. If he is taking the Mlllers job, I hope that means the situation has improved.

Well spotted Dkc. Looks like there is a hitch.

In my view, his recent appointments are typical of a guy who isn't that bothered whether he works or not and he's semi retires. Short term fire fighting and he spends as much time out of work as in it now. The desire is no doubt less than it was when younger and Warnock is all about desire and commitment, and each time he gets a job you think that it won't last long for various reasons. I just don't think he'll keep Rotherham up, especially post the transfer window. I do rate Warnock, although I couldn't stand his flirting with the Pigs job, and I've never seen him in the same light since then. He'll always be associated with United though and he gave us some amazing memories, that we'll always treasure.

Can't believe all these pro Warnock posts. It's called selective memories.
Yeh we played an uptempo direct style which was exciting when it worked but I remember plenty of terrible performances. When ever we lost it was always someone else's fault blaming the ref, pitch whatever.

I also remember some bad performances under Warnock, but in his seven and a half seasons those terrible performances were fewer in number than Adams or Robson achieved in just half a season, or Blackwell in two and a half seasons, Adkins in 29 league games, or Clough last season.

My memory is not selective. It remembers what I have seen. And what I have seen at Bramall Lane has got substantially worse than even the worst moments under Warnock. Yes it can be argued that he made significant mistakes during our premier league season, but even that season was a far more enjoyable season than any of the train wrecks we've had since.

The great afternoons and nights at Bramall Lane under Warnock far outweigh the poorer moments we had and also far outstrip anything we've experienced since he left. They were also better than most of what we'd had to put up with for about 25 years prior to his arrival.

Every team under every manager has poor performances. We even had a few under John Harris, but that doesn't mean his abilities and achievements become somehow invalid.

As for blaming the pitch, referee etc when we lost, when did you ever hear Alex Ferguson accept responsibility for defeat, or Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, or at our level - Steve Cotterill? I don't expect the manager of my club to wring his hands publicly and accept blame when defeated. It's how he responds behind closed doors with the team that is important. I am more interested in how the team responds to that defeat.

How many times did we turn a losing situation into a win under Warnock? Countless times. How many times have we won from a losing situation this season? Not even once.

That's why other clubs have people to deal with that side of it and leave the manager to deal with football matters. And by 'people', I mean people who know what they're doing.

and therein lies the problem - as we heard in Phipps interview last week we haven't got that in place.

There is a new flight route from Donny to Newquay stating in March.

A lot of people will say "never go back" but I think it's a myth that returning managers never do well. Eddie Howe being a good example. Whether Warnock would still have the lower-league knowledge, motivational skills, drive and tactical nous to get us up is another matter. I would have him back under the following circumstances

1) This season would need to to finish disastrously with us flirting with relegation for us to sack the current manager
2) Warnock would need to be fit, health and fully committed
3) A line would need to be drawn under any lingering animosity with McCabe and any other board member
4) The vast majority of fans would need to support the appointment.
But he would kick this sack of shit known as our "first team" right up the arse. Adkins clearly doesn't.

Seriously, why does it have to be so difficult?

You bring a manager in and it gels or it doesn't.
a manager likes a player or he doesn't.
Give a manager a budget and let him do what he needs to do or call him a coach and do it for him. Don't make it messy

Why dont you give it a go yourself. Sounds like you have the answers

adkins is shit Warnock is better

Wow, I'm bowing to that insight. It may come as no shock that I think that statement is not relevant to anything in the past 5 years.

If you can even begin to tell me how you justify doing the dance of death again and sacking another manager I really am all ears. Because I cannot for the life of me see any justification unless you just want to get another relic in from a bygone era who will further prove the saying "never go back"

Warnock. In the same division the day he finished as the day he started.

7 and a half years on the road to nowhere.

Good thing we are all different UTB

Warnock failed his task of keeping us up. His position was untenable after the Wigan defeat and no doubt McCabe would have got loads of stick if he kept the failed manager with many Blades baying for blood. His cheap signings were often good but his signings of over a million tended to be bad. He was known a an excellent lower league manager but we had bigger ambition than that.

I think Warnock is a good impact manager for the short term but we need someone for the long term.

Did Kev, Colin & Sean ever make it up?
Like all best buddies do in the movies?

Why don't we enquire about Dave Bassett too, D.O.F. Get Blackwell in to do the coaching, sign up Brown, Tonge and Kenny and let's all pretend Wolves, Wigan Athletic and the cough medicine never happened.

Warnock.
Dear oh dear oh dear.

For me the jury's still out on Adkins. We have been saying for a long time that we need to give a manager more than one season - ideally two at least - to build their own team. Obviously exceptions should be made if it looks like we might actually go down but otherwise, even if we finish mid table, Adkins probably deserves another year.

It's not necessarily the manager that's at fault. In addition to Adkins, two of the managers we've had in recent history had great records before coming to the Lane. Adams and Wilson both had numerous promotions behind them. They didn't just become crap managers after signing a contract with Sheffield United. They were hampered by the huge expectation at the Lane, probably combined with difficulties in bringing in the players they want - and in DW's case a big slice of bad fortune. To be fair Wilson's tenure wasn't crap but we still sacked him

Don't quite know what you are saying there. I'd love to sign Brown, Tonge and Kenny again if they were at their peak. Similarly, I'd love the Warnock of 2005 to be managing us again. While the players mentioned obviously aren't suitable, why should a potential manager be disgarded just because the bloke is older? Like I said before, I support retaining Adkins. But if Adkins flops badly, and Warnock still is healthy and has the fire in his belly and a majority of fans support his appointment - and peace can be made with KM - then why not?

Realistically, who would you bring in if Adkins fails next season?

Easy.
I'm saying that why Warnock? Just because he got us promoted once, then failed miserably at the first attempt to keep us up, what is the justification for wanting someone who achieved that? That season was all about "Warnock", his autograph books that season must be his pride and joy. As for signing the players quoted, that's same as appointing Warnock. They are from a certain time and era, supporters should thinking ahead not forever backwards, hence the Bassett mention.

Realistically? Impossible to answer. You're asking a question nobody can, who do we know will be available in May/June 2017?

Maybe folks will be still wanting "The Second Coming", if he's still available and alive.

Easy.

Saved us from relegation after Heath, took us to the FA Cup Semi Final, the Play Off Final, the League Cup Semi Final, beat Arsenal at home among others....

Happy with being the best loser?
I'm not.

If Warnock was appointed after we sacked Mickey Adams following relegation, do you really think we'd still be in L1 today?

The question should be.

Would Warnock come to L1 Sheffield United whilst still managing a QPR side that had just gained promotion to the PL?
What do you reckon?

When he took over he had six months to "save" United. He followed Heath who had taken just four points from thirty, no win in ten. He was sacked. Our last nine matches that season, we drew four, lost five. Four points from twenty-seven. Spot the minor difference.
It took him six seasons to get United promoted or was it Blackwell who was "Holmes" and Warnock the "Watson" of the two?
Some of the hoofball that we played under him/them was atrocious at times.
Semi-final appearances and failings, so what?
Because he finally achieved something then failed again immediately, let's not make the man a Blades' legend.
It's a shame that the football forums hadn't really taken off during his tenure at BDTBL.

So would I, that would be great but it's 11 years ago. The Adkins of 2012 is much more recent, and I reckon he might have kept Southampton up in the PL if given the chance.

It's our general piss poor record of achievement in the last 20 years that makes him seen as a relative legend. Since Bassett that one season in the PL has been the best we've had. Wish we'd have kept him on 2007 but we didn't and it's bonkers harking back to him now.
