Neal Maupay

My inner cynic says Villa are looking to spend big and early in order to make a potential points deduction more difficult. As an aside, a points deduction not applying for FFP breaches if you’re promoted is an absolute mockery.
Why will Villa be facing a points deduction? They are no longer subject to EFL rules and can pay a fine like Leicester & Bournemouth if they want to avoid punishment if/when they return to the EFL.

Wow, some money that - £22m. Probably their alternative to Tammy Abraham. They'll probably still go for Maupay too though. Is Gary Madine still available!?

I am a little worried that we simply can’t compete with these teams financially, there’s only so much wilder can do. He needs backing ASAP if the board want us to be there long term.
We never were going to be able to compete with Villa. Can’t understand why their spending is surprising anyone given what our comparative budgets and wage bills were in the last few seasons.

My guess is

£10million ish (maybe mcburnie, assombalonga, Afobe etc)

£5million ish (maybe someone like zohore, Madine etc).

2x £3million ish (maybe Dowell, Connell, Bayliss etc)

2/3 X loans/ frees (Hendo, maybe an old head like Jags/ Valencia)

so maybe just over £20millon on transfer fees plus increased wages taking our highest earners into the 30-35k PW range.

I think that might be enough to give us a fighting chance. Obviously, I would like more but that's my expectation

I reluctantly agree.

Daily Mail article a few weeks ago. EFL and Premier League are in discussions to try and find consistency. EFL worried that if premier league let teams off with a fine, it will make clubs even more tempted to breach FFP.

I would like to point out that when you’re outside of the top six, money doesn’t always buy you quality.

At the moment Villa could well be throwing money at players that won’t make the grade. It’s up to Wilder to find players within our budget that present really good value. It isn’t impossible and often gives you just as much quality as a team spending over the odds on an unproven player from the Championship or from France for instance.

I’m not worried, let them spend. We’ll spend what we have wisely. Remember that we finished a long way ahead of teams that spent a lot more last season.

The force is strong in this one.

Interesting bladesfc and not before time. However, I would think that any measures taken will be applied for forthcoming seasons rather than last season.
Yep as in start the PL on minus points. Which, if they’ve breached the rules, is fully deserved. Price of football tweeted the 17/18 wage bill of all Championship sides (minus you know who) and I think Villa were top at about £73m. I think the lowest was about £10m

There is no way in my opinion that the Premier League will deduct points for something which happened in the EFL.

The Premier League is all about the “best league in the world” brand especially abroad. A team starting on minus points doesn’t fit into that imagine and wouldn’t help with the drama of the league if one team is looking a dead cert to go down before a ball is even kicked.

When they get relegated they will be subject to the punishment

If that’s true. Then FFP in the Championship is pointless.

I'm totally fine for Villa to make this Wesley signing. As soon as I looked it up, the reports were all about how Newcastle were keen. Smacks of an agent touting someone around, Villa seeing an opportunity when issues arose with Newcastle, watching a few games and signing him up off the back of that. Probably very little idea of how he'd settle, his grasp of the language, any "entourage" and how he'd fit in the team. It could prove to be a brilliant signing, but there's a lot of risk at that price and it's just not the kind of thing Wilder would do. And I'm perfectly happy with that. Plus it increases our likelihood of getting Maupay, even if only slightly.

Personally, I don't see how signing Wesley for £22m is more risky than signing Maupay for £20m.

To be truthful any 20m signing is going to be risky. The risk is increased if the player has never played in the Premiership and its increased further if hes never lived and played in England.

That's why McBurnie is lower risk and for.me feels.like a better fit for us. He'll cost less than 15m, hes played fleetingly in the premiership, hes the right age, appears to have to right attitude and importantly plays with his socks rolled down so looks like a proper old school centre forward

How many times have you seen Wesley play?

Genuine question.

Never, the point I'm making is that neither Wesley or Maupay have played in the Premier League so both are far from being guaranteed as decent signings and are therefore gambles.

Whoever we sign will have an element of a gambling about it.

Every single signing in the history of football has been a gamble.

Apart from Dean Hammond. He guaranteed awfulness.

There might be language barrier, the player might not settle in the UK. Or do something daft like fly home every fortnight, increasing the risk of injury. You at least rule some of that out with Maupay.

Language wise I haven't got a clue, but Wesley was in Slovakia for a year and Belgium for 3 years. So the chances of him developing homesickness, not settling in the UK or struggling to learn a new language are incredibly small.

I can’t see Villa going for Maupay anymore and don’t see another market for him apart from us so this could drive the price down or him staying where he is
