I feel sorry for the guy, quitting becaise his old team rigged matches, seems like a guy with some integrity. Now, he's maybe losing the chance to play in the prem and a guaranteed match vs Man Utd.
I'd love to see it like that, but can't help but think that he's trying to push a move through and using the alleged match fixing as a way to make it happen.

Could be wrong but i believe clubs register a maximum of 25 players. We could register 23 then save 2 spaces for free transfers.

Under 21 don't have to count in the 25.
I think what’s he saying is that if we don’t sign him until after the window closes can we still register him? Or do all players have to be registered once the window closes and that’s it until January?

Not sure - i'd guess we have until 31st August to register players but after that then it's until January when you can resubmit the list of 25

Any chance of a compensation deal? Sorry he's terminated his contract and come to us, here's some dosh, don't report us haha

How long has he left on his Mechelen contract? If it's a few hundred thou I'd pay them rather than any risk of a transfer ban.

We do need a number 2, and it's getting a bit late in the day.

He played a full season for them after the match fixing affair so it suggests that he's using it to push through a move.

He only signed for them in 2018, so did he sign after the match fixing scandal?

Can’t we just offer them £100k to save both parties lining lawyer’s pockets? Ultimately he doesn’t want to play for them and they’re just trying to hold him to his contract to get some value out of him.

His club has pretty much held out an olive branch in respect to a transfer, but as usual when a Premier League club is involved, the price goes up.

KV Mechelen received a final disciplinary sanction from the Belgian sports arbitration court on July 17. He then played the Belgian supercup on July 20. So despite all his integrity, he had no problem playing that match and expanding his record if they won (which they didn't). In the weeks before the ruling of the arbitration court, he announced in the press multiple times that he would not leave the team whatever way the ruling would be.

Surely, a decent "sports" lawyer, whom I assume we already have, can advise United on:-
i) Verrips legal position vis-a-vis Mechelen;
ii) whether he can leave there unilaterally or if a fee would be payable to the club he's registered with; and
iii) whether United can let him train with them until this is all sorted out.
That's is assuming he is the great prospect we all hope.

That depends on how clear the law is in relation to this specific ‘offence’. There are a lot of grey areas in law where you’re trying to predict what a judge will think, how he will see the facts and how he’ll apply the law to them.
If it was cut and dried there wouldn’t be an argument which makes me think there’s an element of uncertainty. We couldn’t risk a transfer ban, even if it’s only a small risk, as the consequences would be severe.

Appreciate you coming on here.

Is he any good?

He arrived at the club in the preseason as back up keeper. After a month in the competition he got his chance and took it. Didn't miss a game since. He was crucial in the two championship final games. And he was also crucial in the cupfinal. (He was not good in the supercup game, but I think he already knew right then that he was going to resign the next day.) So, yes I think he's a good goalkeeper and will perhaps be a great one in the future.

There’s no point taking any risk here. Just go and get a free agent like Andy Lonergan for a year and be done with it.

No doubt that's true and it may well be the case here.
Just because there is a dispute/problem/difficulty contractual or otherwise it doesn't mean that the "law" can come to your rescue and give you an answer for any and every situation.
Still, if he is a good as he has been made to appear it would be great to hold onto him - say by allowing him to train with us.
The lawyer can still weigh up the situation and give his "best" advice to make sure United don't drop themselves in it.
Anyway, I want to see more foreigners in the team. Was really hoping we'd go for that guy at Independiente.

Don't see how the match fixing sees his contract voided.
In the same way an employee can have his contract terminated for gross misconduct I suggest and employee can terminate for gross misconduct by an employer.

Lonergan is Liverpool's 3rd keeper isn't he? Played in one of their pre-seasons a couple of weeks ago?

He’s a free agent that’s joined them on their preseason tour. They said when he joined that he wouldn’t be signing – he’s just filling a role in their preseason.
