Sheffield Wednesday are culpable, for the deaths of 96 fans, their knowledge that the ground wasnt fit for purpose is the latest in a catalogue of lies.Their masonic hand shakes with the council and corrupt police knows no bounds. Since the days of Swan and Layne when they were caught up in bribery , and the farce of them getting the 2018 world cup bid for 38 million pounds worth of ground improvements passed , despite at that time being 40 million in debt, and totally unable to fund it, getting planning permission faster than a speeding bullet after the council cronies had put obsticle after obsticle in front of United.
But this latest one where council leaders have again turned a blind eye to a safety certificate , lets not forget they stopped us using our new stand till it got one, has back fired big time.
This seedy behind closed doors practice needs terminating , for the safety of everyone

As much as I hate Wednesday with a passion,at the time the tradegy happened, they were doing no different to many other clubs and doing the bare minumum to maintain the ground.Remember,United didn't have a safety certificate for Bramall Lane at the time as it wasn't a requirement.

For me,the responsibility for 'the 96' mainly lies with the police, the FA and whoever was in charge of safety to ensure that the ground was fit for purpose and to plan what would happen should certain circumstances happened. In previous matched, fans would be stopped on Leppings Lane to check for tickets and the central tunnel would be blocked and fans forced round the sides...this did not happen

As to the council favouring Wednesday ? Can't say I agree with you there but I think it was quite obvious that the Piggery would get the 2018 preferred ground status due to Dave Richard's influence

As somebody who witnessed the cosy deals that enabled Wendy to get a brand new, state-of-the-art ground built in the '60s as part of them getting the World Cup, I have witnessed this rank favouritism over the years and it's still going on.
Hillsborough is still as disaster-in-waiting and the thought that they could cram 38,000 into that shithole (Wycombe, just five months ago) is frightening.
Just wait until Radio Sheffield whips up another 'get yourselves along to Hillsborough' week - Leeds at Home for example, and the dangers are all too evident.
They've had the backing of seedy and corrupt politicians over the years - Blunkett, Betts, Hattersley, Ashton etc. - manouvered the inept 'Sir' Dave Richards into a position of power (like Eric Taylor in the '60s) and, recently, Scriven backed them for the 2018 WC with the ridiculous assertion that 'it would bring £350m of business to the area'. That without even knowing which teams would be playing there.
For those looking on from afar, this may seem like claims of the perennial bias that exists towards Wendy (RS, Stir, Council) but blade too long is right. They've fiddled, and continue to fiddle the system and, if there's another disaster it will be too late to say 'I told you so.'
A minor bit of hooliganism saw a large chunk of Bramall Lane closed for months. Wendy's capacity should be cut to around 20,000 until they sort that rust bucket out.

That's why I hate the pigs with a passion they always do seem to have a connection in the right sort of places, always have done, always will do be it in the media or the FA headquarters and even in the Houses of Parliament you will always find a pig ............................. must be due to em being so MASSIVE.
Strange you should mention the closure of blocks G and H in the south stand due to hooliganism, where were the same rules to be applied when after being relegated the pigs invaded the pitch and attacked opposition players and fans alike ? Strange how they got off Scott free.

Probably because the majority of their fans could be extras from 'Shameless' or 'The Estate' and will always get preferential treatment.

The "minor" bit of hooliganism was when three flares were fired at the Wednesday fans, one of which hit a girl in the face.

Having sat in G/H for the Leeds game in 2003, it was overrun with Burberry clad twats, two to a seat, standing in the aisles, singing about Istanbul. At the time that berk Sinclair used to give a half time shout the "the boys in H-Block". Class.

The closure was deserved, entirely avoidable and pretty shameful.

Using the '89 tragedy to point score over Wednesday isn't too clever either. There could have been a tragedy at a number of the deathtrap stadia that existed in the '80s. Tying events to the favouritism Wednesday have received over the years adds little to the debate.

And also the influence of Roy Hattersley, Clive Betts and David Blunkett. All well known pig fans with access to the right ears when decisions like that are made. Maybe the inquiry should look at who pulled what strings (if any) to arrive at the decision to choose the sty in the first place.

Never has an event been so over-hyped. By the time the Star were through with it our "fans" had launched a scud missile attack on their fans. And personally I was never convinced by the story involving the girl - saved by the owl on her hat her family claimed at one point - yeah right.

Personally I miss the atmosphere created by the H Block. It really did make the Lane a fortress at times. Away fans generally give us some grief - the H block just gave it back.

agree to a lot of whats been said but lets not forget the fookers who died rather than some's blind intolerence of the vile [my own included]was there on boxing day and went to left [as in real life] and nearly 50k were in it that day,and it was eaving any trouble inside and it would have been a disaster.and the stadiums of yesteryear were all shitholes, carlise newport, chester, uddersfield,do we have to list them all our own mecca john st wooden stand? the unfortunate thing was that good did come out of the bad proper seating although scoring on the kop and being 20 feet away from were you were stood was great no smoking no drinking[naa scratch that un]while living over here found out 1 thing the working class will always be blamed, the irish[guilford4 birmingham6]the miners[the enemey within]football violence[over powering policing who's not been a victim of that at football]and dracion laws to protect people??or people with power how many bankers gone to prsion yet?off beam slightly but 96 did die that day.UTB listening today while in work always 1 proud fooking blade

Tinted glasses all round today..

Firing a firework, sorry a flare ('cos they're not dangerous) directly at opposing fans, human beings is damn right stupid. I hate Wednesday as much as the next Blade but I had friends and relatives in that stand that day. Moronic Neanderthal behaviour doesn't come close!!!

I'm not too fond of Liverpool FC or in fact scousers in general either but nobody should die at a football regardless of who's fault it was.

All thats required is open honest meetings where grounds are concerned
How on gods green earth did Wednesday get planning permission in 7 weeks when it took us over 3 and a half years, why do they get waved through to stage games in a stadium unfit for purpose
We dont want to be put first , just given the same even handed approach that should be given.
But on all major political backed decisions we come in every time way behind , when on several occasions we held the stronger case, world cup bid being the most obvious slap in the face

this makes interesting reading

and safety certificates had been tougher since 1975

http://safetyatsportsgrounds.org.uk/faqs/faq003.php

it states the ground owners are ultimately responsible for crowd safety

The families of those lost at Hillsborough deserve justice for their loss, but the families of those lost at Bradford have been far more dignified, but because of that pretty much forgotten by the masses.

I think this is harsh. The families of Liverpool fans who lost their lives seem to me to have been far more dignified than I could evet imagine being. The one thing that struck me on wednesday was how dignified they have been throughout.

Good point and was thinking the same. I may be out on a limb, but is there something innately whiny about Lancastrians? If it is not the '96' from Liverpool, it's Munich and Man United. Funny I don't see Bolton having an annual ceremony in memory of the 33 fans killed there in 1946 or at Ibrox that is plastered all over the national news. Aberfan was far worse and is totally forgotten.

What happened at Hillsbrough was awful, but Bradford was horrendous too, remember seeing it unfurl having watched the Blades that saturday. But FFS give it a bloody break. We can't bring them back and grounds are now safer as a result.

Brownie has just posted the post of the year 2012.

When you accept the UK is a corrupt country it becomes easier, anyone familiar with the planning system and amenity value will concur.

I don't think you can class all Lancastrians as "whiny"; the main problem with Scousers is that awful whiny accent added to the fact that a lot of them have chips on both shoulders. A lot of them also like playing up to the "dodgy Scouser" stereotype. The first time I went to Liverpool I walked across the road from Lime Street station into a shopping precinct (an awful one with shops selling dry food in bins that you scoop up yourself) only to find two blokes in shellsuits having a fight.
Mancs can get on your nerves but they tend to just get on with things; boltonians haven't learnt to speak properly yet so are best ignored ;)

I went to Liverpool around 6 months back and had a cracking night out on Mathews St and in the Cavern, mind you early on around 100 Liverpool and Everton fans were going toe to toe, a quick retreat into Wheatherspoon's for some tea was required just after we had got out of the taxi. I don't think scousers are whiney as such but as soon as they talk the accent sounds like someone whining.

The channel 5 programme the truth about hillsborough tonight is scathing about Wednesday and depicts them as culpable, it says they were ordered to carry out changes to put correct numbers in pens but they decided to"save money" instead, they ended up making a crush zone, not segregating or cordoning each area and hadn't received clearance.
Someone needs bringing to book over this cost cutting exercise

Saw that last night. Think someone down at the sty will be bricking it right about now. Towards the end of the programme I just felt so relieved that this hadnt happened at BDTBL as well as feeling sorry for the families of the deceased

AFAIC any cheap shots at the sty are perfectly acceptable.. keep them coming;)
as i have said many times.. if i win the euromillions i will buy wednesday (not united) and shut it down.. just for spite

This isnt a cheap shop , but genuine disgust at the board at S6 , putting filthy lucre before safety

SOME ONE NEEDS BRINGING TO BOOK FOR THIS

to be fair I dont remember The Sun saying Bradford fans were drunk or robbing the dead or pissing on coppers, all untruths as we now know
That might be why they werent as vociferous
